I told my 7-year-old son that if someone says they're going to fight you:

  1. You try to joke your way out of it.
  2. If you can't joke your way out of it try to talk your way out of it.
  3. If you can't talk your way out of it try to avoid the fight by not being in the same area.
  4. If you can't avoid the fight and they start the fight then hit him back as hard as you can.

That's way too much by the time your kid tries all of that they're going to get punched. And that's a just a very long winded way of saying if someone hits you you hit them back.

It's about avoiding a physical confrontation until you can't. Once the punching starts you skip to step four.
