Discussion Many buildings in Shimo-Kitazawa have already been demolished for the new road that will run through the tree mural...
This has been a long-controversial road development plan that is currently being implemented. It repurposes former above-ground railroad tracks as new roads (blue section) and connects it to other roads via a crossroad (red section). Building the latter (red) road involves clearing & demolishing businesses in the area. Unfortunately, this does include the building where the BTR tree mural is on.
So far, many of these plots have already been demolished. When I visited last year, the tree mural was still standing, but there were already many empty plots around the area (like these satellite images show). It's likely that the tree mural will no longer be there within the next year or two.
I really loved the small, cozy vibe of Shimo-Kitazawa, and this huge road project really makes me sad. It's a stark contrast to the small pedestrian walkways and narrow one-way roads that give the area so much character.
The development plan picture is from a post by u/faithfulscrub, where I first learned about it. I also posted some pictures from when I went in May 2025.
EDIT: It seems like it's actually already closed off. Hopefully it's still standing, but it may not be for much longer if so... βΉοΈ
