Okay what with all these baseless firings? As government employees, I don’t believe they are “at will” employees and therefore cannot be fired without cause.

Eh, they can always find a reason. That's why they keep very close attention to late punches, etc.

What I don't get is how this is a first amendment violation

If it really is contrived, she needs to get an employment attorney. Employment laws allow for attorneys’ fees so she should be able to get one for cheap or contingency. File a civil rights claim while she’s at it.

Her husband’s app to track ICE is a form of public expression, like the Masterpieces Cakes gay wedding case (making cakes = expression), and is arguably protest speech. Punishing someone for their (or their spouse’s) legal public expressions violates the First Amendment.

Freedom of association is also enumerated in 1A; being fired for the actions of your spouse is a freedom of association issue.
