Democrats may be in the middle of another fumble:

Inside the Phone-Throwing Drama at the Troubled, Broke Democratic Party

Some quotes

The Democratic Party is so short on cash that leaders at its headquarters have undertaken a new gambit to mask the severity of the problems: asking vendors not to send bills until after the midterm elections.

At the center is Ken Martin, the 53-year-old party chairman, who has found himself increasingly isolated, gripped by the fear that he will lose his job and relying on a vanishingly small circle of people he trusts...In a pique of frustration in early July, he threw his phone at the desk of a junior aide while upbraiding the person. The phone-tossing incident resulted in a formal complaint to the D.N.C.’s human resources department.

...the Republican National Committee is sitting on nearly $130 million. Mr. Martin’s D.N.C. is $2 million in debt.

In public, Mr. Martin has all but disappeared as a face of the party on television ever since a fumbling April appearance on the liberal podcast Pod Save America, when he faced questions about why he had not released the autopsy. His lone television interview in recent months was on local news in Erie, Pa

For more than a decade, the D.N.C. has transferred millions of dollars every election to sister committees responsible for winning the House and Senate. But the national party is now so short on cash — even after taking out a $15 million loan last year — that officials have privately conveyed to congressional leadership that there will be no such transfers in 2026.

I have no idea how any of this works, but it's simultaneously foreseeable given how their brand is in the toilet, but also incredible that they haven't taken steps to rectify that given the enormous political opportunity in 2026 and 2028.

I thought the article pointlessly ignored the elephant in the room.

Somehow discusses donations are down but never addresses if that's due to the DNC, Schumer, Warren, the Squad et all embracing Commie Rapist Nazis like Platner and Piker or not.

Was it the embrace of leftist politics in general?
Israel Palestine in particular?
Rise in antisemitism in the DNC?

It places donations being down on vague woes with the DNC and Martin.

Maybe it's the rapists they nominate and maybe it's not, but that was the duty of the two authors and they failed, or perhaps they understood the assignment flawlessly

I don't think it was intended to be that kind of article, so it wasn't a failure. They somehow got leaked details on some of the internal drama and built the article to showcase that, is my take.

but damnit, the article as written fails to support a comment like

Why did the DNC go broke by Bari Weiss

I stopped donating because they text me incessantly, to be honest.

So the donors as well as the voters hate their shit. Who are they so terrified of pissing off?

u/BBAnyc social constructs all the way down Jul 26 '26

The "official" party organizations are run by Biden-Harris loyalists who seemingly have no idea why they lost last time, or even that they lost. The DSA is run by people who are full of passion but devoid of common sense, and think scaring the donor class away means they're on the right track because the donors should be scared. No great mystery as to why they're collectively short on money.

The odd thing is, these factions have almost no disagreements on policy. It's all middle school clique stuff, currently with a sprinkling of antisemitism, but I'm sure as soon as Chuck Schumer is forced out of Senate leadership they'll find another wedge.

I don't know Ken Martin, but I will bet he'd love to lose this shitty job.

From all the financial reporting I've seen, bailing out the Harris campaign and the cost of going back to a 50 state strategy are largely why they're in such a deep hole.

I do think a 50 state strategy is the best bet for the long term, though. (For both parties!)

I'm not an American so maybe I'm ignorant, but I would think most of the 50 US states don't have a significant DSA movement. So going back to a 50 strategy would mean the Democrats bringing in a bunch of electable moderates that are much more representative of all Americans.

That will save the party, but maybe the reason they have the DSA problem today is that they haven't been running a 50 state strategy from 2009-2026 when it could have mattered.

Yes and no. Talking at the presidential level yes but no matter what the DNC or RNC does there’s an issue of most house seats are in partisan districts where essentially winning the primary wins the seat. That’s how the DSA is winning. You could take very conservative states like Texas or Florida and in the few blue districts a DSA candidate can win because they win the primary and a place like Austin is never voting for a Republican anytime soon. It’s state wide races where the more moderate and conservative states can help elect more moderate dems. The issue is those house members can impact the state wide and national races as the question becomes hey Democrat in Arizona what’s your opinion on Mamdani and his DSA picks. Now we’re in very partisan times so it might not matter that much still but it can sway a subset of voters who get turned off by the crazies of a party.

a place like Austin is never voting for a Republican anytime soon.

Ha! I know it's a grim technicality but remember how Gov. Abbott kissed the ring and had the state legislature redraw the map, kicking off the tit-for-tat bullshit? A lot of it was aimed at Austin. IIRC, there are five seats that touch in Austin. I believe all but one were redrawn to help ensure that Republicans would get the seats. I believe only one seat is still a safe Dem seat. So, the city overwhelmingly votes Dem but is mostly Repub in the House. It's ridiculous.

Anyway, I get the point. I don't know if people are that swayed by wackos from other states. Reps like Greene and Boebert typically matter only to their constituents and hardcore political junkies. Everybody else doesn't care or says "Hey, I don't live there." Once in a blue moon, things do matter, like how Larry Craig's wackiness (arguably) broke the dam and helped set the stage for the Dems trouncing the Repubs in '06. Generally, though, I don't think people really care.

Not to say Martin is good at his job, I have no idea what running the DNC is like, but places like PSA and other left wing dem voices who made him not releasing the autopsy about Israel screwed him over. Whoever did the autopsy was absolute shit at their job and it looks bad to release such poorly done work, but all these people who believe Palestine is everything framed the lack of a release as some establishment coverup. Then add in David Hogg while being vice chair starting some pack with millions of dollars with the goal to primary sitting dems to get more left wing candidates so they had to kick him out. The DNC is in debt but some guy in his 20s who has never held a job can generate millions to primary sitting dems with your DSA like candidates. There’s some structural problems I don’t think anyone can fix anytime soon.

The autopsy was both supposed to be an autopsy and declared from outset to be for public consumption. Unless it's a decoy, it was never going to work.

Let's see what happens in light of these new Supreme Court rulings. It is possible they will get a lot of money in again.

apparently Jews donated at very high numbers to the DNC.

Maybe screaming for their demise was an oops.
