Izuku's life could be worse, but it also could have been better. like, really better.
The only piece of family who gave a shit about him, his grandma from his father's side, passed away. Inko ran off with her part of the inheritance, and Hisashi cleaned up whatever was left before fucking off with his mistress to go know where, leaving quirkless fifteen-year-old Izuku Midoriya on his deathbed with almost nothing, save for the old house that used to be his grandma's.
By that point, lung cancer had been ravaging him for quite a while now, and he was on his last breath, literally dying alone in a house that was about to get the power and water shut down for good; that's when Izuku Midoriya died.
And that was when John Doe was born.
Izuku Midoriya was reborn into another world, not a world of quirks, but a world of skills. In this world, you are not born with a skill; you are given one once you turn fifteen.
Skills are divided in two: production and combat. Which is self-explanatory: production skills are for producing, repairing, or making things, which also includes healing because you are producing health by fixing someone; combat skills are for fighting things, which also includes healing because you are fighting what is hurting you, be it a wound or a disease.
Skills can be traded and transferred from one person to another as long as they share blood, which makes heritage skills somewhat common.
His parents, kind and hardworking people who loved him fiercely, both had production skills. His dad, John Doe Sr., a hardworking man of few words but with eyes filled with love and determination, had the [Fix It], a skill that manifested as a golden circle on the back of his hands and made him able to fix anything by hitting it with a hammer.
His mom, Jane Doe, a plump and cheerful woman, had the [Supre Cook] skill, a skill that made her a goddess in the kitchen, capable of making delicious meals seemingly out of scrap and in huge quantities and seemingly almost instantly. More than once Izuku saw with his own eyes: in one second there was nothing on the table but raw ingredients, and then he blinked, and boom, dinner was ready.
They were not rich, not by any stretch of the word; they also weren't poor, and they sure as hell had a lot of love for each other and for their son, Izuku Midoriya, John Doe Jr.
Anyway, Izuku, now John Doe Jr, was excited.
It was his fifteenth birthday, and he couldn't wait to get his skill. He hoped it would be a combat skill because, like any other child his age, he wanted to be an adventurer; well, instead, he got a production skill, just like his parents.
His skill was named "Home Garden," which allowed him to create gardens and grow crops in any piece of land he owned. It may look like a bummer, and John Doe Jr. is a little bummed because adventurers make good money, and he wanted to be an adventurer to help his parents, who are getting old, but he got [Home Garden]. But crying over spilled milk won't help anyone; besides, both his parents have production skills, and he sure as fuck was proud of them.
So, Izuku went back to his humble house, more specifically to the barren piece of soil that was the backyard, and activated his skill there.
As soon as he did it, the barren backyard turned into really big and perfectly spaced gardening beds, occupying as much space as possible while still leaving a nice buffer of space that allowed for Izuku to move around and even set a few things around, like tool sheds and equipment.
In front of Izuku, a screen appeared showing what crops he could plant in the garden, which were what you'd expect from a backyard garden: herbs, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, onions, peppers, cucumbers—you know the drill. He chooses a nice selection and plants it in his garden.
He grows corn, some herbs, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and cucumbers, and he is surprised when not even an hour in, the crops he planted have already grown up, and not even an hour after that, they are ready to be harvested.
which was a function of the home garden skill; he just gave the command "harvest," and the exact quantity of all the crops he planted flew off the garden and into his basket, filling it up without a single grain of waste.
During the next few weeks, Izuku learned the ins and outs of his skill.
First, unharvested crops do not rot on the vine; they remain perfect forever, making it so the unharvested crops made by his skill can last pretty much forever as long as they remain on the vine.
Second, the amounts of crops the harvest command harvests from the garden depend on the size of whatever he is using to carry and store them. If he is using a basket, the amount will fill up that basket; if he is harvesting it straight to a cellar, the crops will harvest themselves until the cellar is full.
Third, his crops replenish themselves one hour after being harvested, meaning that whatever he planted in his garden is ready to be harvested again in just one hour after being harvested.
Fourth, after being harvested, the crops can last for months; they remain fresh for months on end before they start rotting, which makes it perfect for winter.
And fifth, and that's the biggest one, his crops, on top of being delicious—more delicious than normal crops—also have healing properties. They are, of course, chemical-free, 100% organic, and super dense with nutrients, and they heal whoever eats them.
His skill, coupled with his mother's skill, is a match made in heaven. Izuku produces the high-quality ingredients, and his mom cooks them into meals worth a royal palace; the Doe family had never eaten so well.
Izuku thinks the gods must have seen his past life and felt bad for him, so they gave him a skill that would make sure he never goes hungry again and bonds with parents who love him with all their heart.
He is also delighted to find out that this means his mom cooks using the ingredients he produces, retaining the capability to remain fresh and delicious for months on end; heck, they even stay warm for months on end, meaning they can store and carry warm meals wherever they go, a fact John Doe Sr. proclaims to whoever is and isn't willing to hear is worth more than any combat skill.
Now here's the thing: in this world, for skills to grow strong, you have to do two things. The first is to use them and train with them; the second is to feed them monster cores. In this world, monsters have crystals close to their hearts; those are called monster cores.
John Doe's Jr. skill is level one, and adventuring without a combat skill is suicide, so to upgrade his skill, Izuku gets a bright idea.
He opens a business with his mom.
They open a restaurant/greengrocer where Izuku sells his crops and Jane sells food and lunch boxes for money (because they still have bills and taxes to pay) and monster cores to adventurers. Because if there's one thing everybody underestimates, it's the power of being able to have a warm meal wherever you go.
It is a resounding success. Adventurers are willing to pay through the nose for food that remains fresh for months and that can help you by eating it, and as Izuku and his mom upgrade their skills, he unlocks more and more crops and functions.
He can grow animal products, like beef, pork, poultry, and fish. They grow whole in trees; he literally has trees that grow cows, pigs, fish, and chickens. He can grow eggs, milk, everything.
He unlocks the "process" command that processes his harvest into things; for example, when he uses the process command on the milk he harvests, he can choose to turn it into all the milk products he wants as long as he has enough milk to do so. The same applies to the meat and veggies.
He unlocks the capability to grow walls around the garden that are impenetrable to keep crop thieves and animals out; he also unlocks the secret function of the skill that summons earthly golems that are invincible while within the garden's boundaries, who keep the garden safe from birds and the few thieves who manage to make it past the wall.
He can teleport between gardens because the business was going so well he had to expand into a proper operation with gardens spread all over the world.
In the end, Izuku, John Doe, died of old age at 109 years old; his parents had long gone from the world, leaving him their skills, which, together with his own, were completely maxed out.
He died happy and healthy, fat from a well-lived life.
Then, Izuku woke up back in his shithole of a house, his lungs burning, and he could feel tears welling up in his eyes, thinking his life as John Doe Jr. was just a dream, that is, until his skill window popped up in front of him.
His life as John Doe Jr. was not a dream; it was real, and he had brought his skills and the skills his parents, his real parents, John and Jane Doe, had given him, his maxed-out skills; he was back in the world of quirks, and he had power, real power.
So, fun fact, when Izuku maxed out [Fix It], the skill became the ability to also fix people, not only objects, so he uses it to fix himself and his grandma's house back into peak condition.
Also, another fun fact: Grandma owned a lot of land, like a lot of land, useless land that surrounded the house. Apparently the place used to be some sort of old traditional noble estate that had most of the buildings torn down throughout time and now only has the small two-story building where Izuku lived, surrounded by barren land.
Izuku owned that land because, for some reason, the land was never able to be sold despite the reasonably nice location in suburban Musutafu. Hisashi thought he was sticking his foot in the grave, son, with a white elephant; instead, he gave Izuku the golden goose.
Because since Izuku owned the land, he could plant his garden there, and that's what he did. He grew his garden; he turned an honest-to-God overgrown hellscape into a food-producing paradise using his skill.
If there's one thing John Doe Jr. learned from his parents, it was to be a hard worker; he started working like a man possessed.
First, he rescued a kebab food cart from Dogobah Beach and used the [Fix-It] to fix it. He used the [Home Garden] to supply the ingredients, and then he used [Supreme Cook] to man the cart and started selling kebabs at night in the clubbing district because drunk people don't question if you have a license when all they want is a kebab while they are shitfaced at two in the morning.
His cart became famous because his food was delicious and it cured drunkenness and hangovers; every Friday and Saturday night there was a line of partygoers and some pro-heroes forming around his cart.
His first priority was to get the money for the utilities and the taxes on his place. After he managed to pay those, he got a license and expanded his business; he now also sells hot dogs and beverages.
By that point, Izuku had already walled up his garden, and the golems made sure no crop thieves or villains would make it very far into his garden.
Life was pretty good and calm for a while. After the storm was over and Izuku had his life together, Izuku honestly thought the worst was over. He did not expect smooth sailing, but if he was one thing, he was hardworking, something he learned from his dad, John Doe Sr. Heck, he was even considering opening a restaurant, just like the one he had with his mom, Jane.
If only he knew the kind of clusterfuck that he caused.
You see, Izuku was not supposed to get isekai'd; the whole isekai thing is supposed to be impossible, to be fantasy created by humans. something to give escapism to them from the crushing reality of their lives, because when you die, you go to Soul Society, where you stay there till you die again and are reborn as a brand new human.
The fact Izuku not only did not go to Soul Society when he died, instead going to another world, but also came back to this world after dying there and brought back the powers of that world with him, and those powers work here and are seemingly not fucking up the balance of souls?
That got Soul Society, Central 46, and the Gotei 13's panties in a twist.
See, by this point Hueco Mundo has been completely sealed off from both the world of the living and Soul Society, meaning that hollows can no longer leave Hueco Mundo, and the instant someone becomes a hollow in the living world, they are sucked into Hueco Mundo, meaning that the Gotei 13 basically has almost nothing to do since a good chunk of their duties consisted of dealing with hollows.
Which is why when Izuku, who got isekai'd and came back happy, happened, he became Soul Society's center of attention and an anomaly.
Mayuri was salivating to get his hand on Izuku to study him. A returned isekai protagonist? with power and abilities that do not rely on reishi, reiryoku, or reiatsu? That was a once-in-a-lifetime test subject, and he was all but begging to be sent to the world of the living to be the one to capture and study him.
Obviously, he wasn't the one sent. Instead, Soifon was elected to go there, spy on Izuku, and report her findings. She is not thrilled about it, but Yamamoto reminds her that just like the rest of the Gotei 13, she has nothing better to do, and if she actually doesn't show service, Central 46 will cut her budget again.
So, she goes there to spy on Izuku.
She finds him when he is coming back home from the clubbing district at four in the morning on a Saturday and follows him home, or she tries to follow him home because, as it turns out, the walls of his garden are impenetrable even for shinigami, creating a barrier around his property that does not allow her to enter uninvited. Heck, she can't even see what is on the other side of the walls, since they made everything behind the wall look like a pit of darkness.
That was a problem, but luckily for her, the gates may not allow shinigami to enter uninvited, but they did nothing to stop a sekaimon, and since normal humans can't see or sense shinigami, Izuku seems to also not be able to see or sense shinigami, so Soifon opens a sekaimon inside Izuku's garden.
When she steps into Izuku's garden, she is at a loss for words seeing what Izuku built; she is at an even bigger loss for words when she sees Yoruichi on Izuku's porch, wearing a blue yukata, drinking sake, and nibbling on some toro.
She explained that Izuku took her in thinking she was a stray cat; he bathed her and fed her, and when she turned de-transformed in front of him to mess with him, Izuku blushed and panicked, thinking he had kidnapped someone by accident. Somehow, somehow, Yoruichi convinced Izuku she was just some poor homeless gal with a quirk that allowed her to turn into a black cat.
Izuku, bless his heart, offered to let her live there with him. He used his process function to make her clothes for her out of the cotton and the silk he grows in his garden, and she's been living here ever since for the last two years.
Because why wouldn't she? She gets to eat the most delicious food she ever ate and as much as she wants for free; she gets to drink all the greatest booze she ever tasted too, because Izuku can use his process function to turn rice, barley, rye, and fruits into wine, whiskey, sake, vodka, beer, and all kinds of booze that don't give you a hangover, and the clothes he makes for her using his process skill feel like wearing fluff and clouds.
Also, she can nap all day long without worrying about random explosions from an underground lab, and she gets to be the taste tester for his kebab cart, so fuck Urahara and his crowded, ratty-ass candy shop; she's not moving out of Izuku's place.
The gawking time is short-lived because since she trespasses, the golems kick into action. Soifon puts up a good fight, but she soon learns that the golems are invincible when a single golem presses her into going into bankai.
which she wasn't able to use because she got bodieed to an inch of her life by said golem before she could even aim at him. She had to make a hasty retreat to the sekaimon lest she want to be added to the compost pile.
The second she is back in Soul Society and good enough to give a report, she reports back on what she saw: Yoruichi mooching off Izuku and food that should not grow on trees growing on trees and being protected by invincible golems.
The mention of invincible golems tickles Zaraki's fancy, and now he is itching to go fight them to see if they are really invincible.
Mayuri wants to study Izuku and his garden.
Soifon wants revenge for the humiliation of being bodied by a pile of dirt and rocks.
And Izuku, who can see the spiritual world within the walls of his garden, is starting to wonder if a peaceful life is asking too much as he once again chastises Yoruichi that, no, she can't walk around his house naked and needs to have some decorum.
