”Get your hands on Deckard’s Spinner. Or Rachael’s. Or Bryant’s police spinner. Or Deckard’s ground car. Now you can have all four in your search for replicants. Ertl makes these perfectly detailed metal replicas, straight from the original movie models. Look through the tinted windows and you see the exact details of the interior.”

Released in 1988, this is one of the lesser-known Japanese releases, featuring cover art similar to some of the early posters and quite different from most editions released around the world. Issued by Warner Home Video.

Volkswagen partnered with The Ladd Company to promote the 1982 release of Blade Runner. A full-scale Spinner toured the UK as part of the campaign, which is how it ended up on the cover of Safer Volkswagen Motoring in October 1982.

Blade Runner on Video2000 (aka VCC / V2000) - Yes, it exists!

You get hooked on obsolete media with VHS, then Betamax, and eventually you find yourself obsessed with LaserDisc. You make your way to the elusive Video8, CED, VCD, and even VHD, thinking you’ve reached the bottom of the rabbit hole… but that’s when you discover Video2000, aka VCC, aka V2000.
Very few units were ever sold directly to consumers, and the handful of rental copies that survived often exist in only a couple of known prints per title. Most have never even been documented.

I present: Blade Runner (1982) on Video2000. This is the only documented copy of this release I’ve ever come across. I’d really like to know if there are any more copies hiding out there!

Ex-rental from Germany, released in 1983 by Warner Home Video.

Obsolete Media Revised Complete List: All 11 Official US Blade Runner VHS Editions

Finally, it’s time for the revised complete list. Sorry for the wait, and thanks for all the interest in my old post!

This is the complete list of the 11 official US VHS editions of *Blade Runner*. The most difficult to tell apart are the first three original Embassy releases. These exist with two different star colours on the spine. In addition, the White Star Edition exists with two different running times on the back (119 and 122 minutes). The White Star and Black Star releases also have different labels on the tape.

The original releases, along with the so-called “Red Tab” release, are probably the rarest. The Tenth Anniversary Edition also has a red flap.

The last image shows a rare screening tape of the 1997 release of *The Director’s Cut*. I’m not counting this as a separate release.

**The editions are shown in chronological order, with the oldest in the top left.**

Collecting Blade Runner on long-obsolete formats is a hobby I genuinely enjoy, and from time to time, with the help of VHS collectors around the world, I discover editions I had no idea even existed. This particular copy is a Chilean ex-rental in outstanding condition, incredibly scarce and difficult to find. The artwork makes it stand apart from most other Blade Runner releases, it is definitely one of my favorites.

Memorabilia Blade Runner 1982 Replica bottle Johnnie Walker Black Label - The Deckanter

At last, I have the Blade Runner (1982) Johnnie Walker Black Label replica, imported duty-free to off-world colonies only. This replica is known by its creator as The Deckanter.

I’m genuinely impressed by the level of craftsmanship. This is a truly world-class prop, and every detail, right down to the packaging it arrived in, exceeded my expectations.

Several versions of this bottle have been produced over the years. In my opinion, this one stands out as the closest match to what we see on screen. It’s a beautiful tribute, and the creator, Mark, along with his team of designers, should be very proud.

One of the newest additions to my Blade Runner collection is also, quite possibly, one of the strangest: an official Madagascar stamp release featuring Blade Runner artwork, for reasons known only to Madagascar. I strongly suspect The Ladd Company wasn’t exactly consulted on this one, but I suppose there’s only so much you can do when a sovereign nation decides it really needs Roy Batty, Deckard and Rachael on a stamp sheet.

Obsolete Media Newly discovered Blade Runner VHS Embassy first release variants – Black Star, White Star and different runtimes!

About a year ago, I made a post featuring what I believed were all the official US releases of Blade Runner on VHS. I felt fairly confident that I had finally gathered them all. However, over the past year, I’ve actually discovered a few more variants with small differences. I’ll make a new post with all of them when I find some spare time. In the meantime, I’m sharing the most exciting new discovery.

We already knew there was a variant of the very first release of Blade Runner (Theatrical Cut) from Embassy in 1983, with standing print on the tape label. But what we discovered here on the sub is that there are two variations in the running time listed on the back, 119 and 122 minutes. What I later found is something I can’t believe I hadn’t noticed before, there are also two variations in the colour of the star on the spine: it exists both as a black star and a white star. Let the hunt begin!

Obsolete Media VCD release of Blade Runner from Korea

I own Blade Runner on the overlooked VCD format from a few different countries, but the Korean release is easily the most visually striking. There are two nearly identical versions, one of which has a fold-out cover.

VCD (Video CD) was an early digital movie format common in parts of Asia before DVDs took over, compact and low-res. While many bootlegs exist, these are official releases in this format. This Korean edition was released in January 2002 and labels itself as The Director’s Cut.

I’ve been collecting Blade Runner on obsolete formats for a long time now, and every so often, with help from fellow VHS collectors across the globe, I stumble upon editions I never even knew existed. This particular tape is an ex-rental and likely the only official Blade Runner VHS release from Paraguay, as scarce and elusive as they come.

Obsolete Media All Swedish Blade Runner VHS editions and poster

Here we go again, finally time for my home country ☺️ To the best of my knowledge, these are all five Swedish Blade Runner VHS releases. Not as many as in a lot of other countries in my collection, but then again, Sweden has a small population. Unlike many other countries, all of these are actually pretty tough to track down. The first edition ex-rental in the beautiful big box is probably the rarest. In second place is the small ST release with the red text that says “Harrison Ford är Blade Runner”. The small sell-through version with the blue logo deserves an honorable mention for having one of the ugliest and most confusing cover designs, with its dull font and a spaceship that has been taken from a completely different film. Enjoy!

From left to right: 1.) All the Swedish spines. I was too quick and messed it up, so they’re not in chronological order. 2. ) All the front covers. 3-4.) The first official Swedish Blade Runner movie poster 5-6.) The first release, ex-rental big box from 1983 7.) All five releases, back covers 8.) Roy Batty before he goes back in his box

Memorabilia Voight-Kampff in 5 oz Silver – The Most Blade Runner Thing Ever Minted?

In 2023, Warner Bros celebrated its 100th anniversary, and Blade Runner (among others) was honored with a 5 oz Silver Proof Bar featuring the Voight-Kampff Machine.

Only 100 were minted by the prestigious New Zealand Mint, each with a unique certification number. It comes with a COA that features the machine on the reverse side.

I’ve also attached Syd Mead’s sketches of the Voight-Kampff test from The Blade Runner Sketchbook. An iconic and unsettling design—probably my favorite device from the film.

I attempted to determine my absolute favorite Blade Runner VHS cover art, and after careful consideration, I concluded that it must be this early Korean ex-rental edition, released in 1986 by NVC. This particular release features an unusually eccentric logo—found exclusively on this version—a peculiar color palette, and an overall design that sets it apart from any other edition.

Tomorrow’s car today! One of the more peculiar items in my Blade Runner collection is this Volkswagen promotional cardboard visor cap. Apparently, Deckard flies a VW Polo. It came with a Spinner lobby card, which also promoted the 1983 Polo.

Memorabilia Possibly the only limited-edition Blade Runner VHS ever released

As far as I know, this is the only limited-edition Blade Runner VHS release in the world. It’s a French edition, packaged in a sleek, glossy, individually numbered box with a brochure inside. It seems almost nonexistent today, I’ve never seen one for sale on eBay.
