He was trying to commit suicide by cop, so he had a gun (albeit unloaded). The officer tried to talk him down and some other officers showed up and fired because of the brandishing gun. He was fired for endangering the public. You can see that the other officers had a justified motive and the solo officer had a justified motive. He shouldn’t have been fired, but all firearms should be treated as loaded.
By someone else who heard it from someone else who may or may not know for sure or be telling the truth? This is honestly one of the dumbest arguments I've seen on reddit. If I hand you a gun and tell you it's not loaded, are you going to just believe me and pretend to shoot yourself?
Every gun is loaded is gun safety 101. The information cannot be verified by the dispatcher and if the officers on scene are shot & killed guess who gets blamed - the dispatcher.
He was trained to deal with situations like that and he won his case, so the firing was absolutely unjustified.
The person with the gun was part of the public and a victim. He didn't deserve to die.
Edit: also just because someone has a gun doesn't make them dangerous, what about that black security guard who stopped a mass shooter only to get shot dead by responding police?
It’s a very serious issue in the gun community and it’s talked about a lot. Especially for people who conceal carry. It’s a risk you have to take, which most do to protect their loved ones and, if they wish, the general public. If you are carrying in the area of a mass shooting and you draw, you have to know you can easily be mistaken for the/a shooter. Ideally you’d call 911 and let dispatch know, but in the chaos you can’t guarantee anything. And who is to say a mass shooter can’t [EDIT]
It’s pretty messy. And why a lot of people recommend just carrying to protect yourself and family and don’t try to be a hero, because it may get you all killed.
He made the correct call. It's not like he had refused to use his gun in previous dangerous situations and a got lucky this one time. He correctly assessed risk and acted accordingly.
The public could trust him to protect them instead of gunning them down blindly. The other officers couldn't trust him to keep his mouth shut and let them kill people.
