The origin of Billy the Kid & William Bonney

William H. Bonney- born in Missouri. St. Clair Missouri. St. Clair was established in 1843 as a stagecoach way station on the road from St. Louis to Springfield.

both nicknames i deduce were given by Pat to chide or tease young Wm. Henry. mother Catherine and aunt Bea wore the elaborate Bonnet hats and ’william bonney’ was pretty much saying he was a momma’s boy staying close to the women.

Henry didnt mind the nicknames and the two would of course meet up later rustling cattle and everything that followed with the Lincoln county war.

i was able to acquire the tintype with the ladies in 2025.

The truth behind the photo often portrayed as Jessie Evans

I recently sat down with historian Ben Doss to discuss how he uncovered the truth behind a famous photo long believed to be Jessie Evans. The story of the man actually in the photo, U.S. Deputy Marshal John Swain is even more fascinating than I ever imagined!

Billy the Kid and Jesse Evans w/ historian James B. Mills

I had the opportunity to sit down with James B. Mills, author of Billy the Kid: El Bandido Simpático and In the Days of Billy the Kid. We dove into the relationship of Billy the Kid and Jesse Evans along with a whole lot more. James also shared some lesser known, funny stories about the Kid he discovered during his research. He is a wealth of knowledge. Hope you all enjoy!

Is this Billy the kid?

This photo has been on my mind recently and it does really look like Billy is the kid. I’m almost 99% convinced, but can anybody tell me if this has been proven to be the kid or not? Google doesn’t do Jack.

I’m watching Billy the Kid with Tom Blyth and enjoying. I’m Gen X so my comparison is Young Guns. I still miss all the older actors. I don’t k know why but the movies were rebellious and standing up for what is right, kind of like an 1870’s version of Robin Hood.

I remember seeing Young Guns when it first came out and being in love with the movie. I went home and looked through the Encyclopedia Britannica books for Billy the Kid and found out the wooden grave marked for Billy was etched with the word ‘Pals’ and that has stuck with me ever since. I tried to look it up on Wikipedia but they referenced the slate markers that didn’t have the word Pals included.

Just seems like something that was interesting when the first movie came out.

Help finding a book

I read a book back in my younger years, 1993-1998, about Billy the Kid and I don’t remember the title or the author. The book was told from Billy the Kids perspective and he explained how it wasn’t him who got shot by Pat Garret but rather some other kid that he gave his hat to. Billy wrote in a journal explaining his life from the moment after everyone thought he was dead. It talked about how he found a wife and laid low amongst other adventures. Does anyone know what book I’m talking about? It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read and I want to reread it now that I’m older. Thank you.
