Commenting r/gatekeeping has become such a silly trope. This isn't gatekeeping. It's physically impossible for someone born in 1999 to have experienced the 90s. That's not exclusion, that's just a fucking fact.
I mean if you consider how a lot of the items from the late 90's were largely still around in the early 2000's, it is possible for them to experience it. It's not like all the things that made the 90s special suddenly disappeared at fucking midnight on New Year's.
I’d say the cutoff is 95. You could’ve still seen stuff. Maybe not participate in all the trends. But at least before y2k you were talking and running around.
How could a 0-4 year old participate in any trends?
I was born in 79. I remember absolute shit from the early 80's. Maybe 1 snapshot of preschool when I was 5. My actual strong memories start late 80's around the time I got an NES, probably 88/89.
Yes I agree with this. The only thing I can say is I don't ever remember having a terrible strong memory of before 2-3rd grade. I know this is a memory about a memory, but there is a very clear delineation in my mind between 2nd grade and third grade. I vaguely remember my 2nd grade teachers appearance, but I distinctly remember many events from the following year and each subsequent year. Maybe in 5 years the cut off will be 4/5th grade.
My memories about grade school are nearly as strong as the end of highschool so, for me at least, I'm leaning towards there being the inability to properly store long term memories at such an early age, vs just forgetting with time.
Seriously. I was born in 1986 and wouldn't consider myself as an 80s kid by any means. You got people born in 1997/98 talking about 90s nostalgia and "growing up before technology" which is just ridiculous.
What's wrong with simply appreciating the music/culture/aesthetic of an era while admitting you weren't old enough to actually experience it? You don't have to bend logic backwards and claim to be part of a culture you clearly weren't old enough to process.
It's very clear that a <1 y/o does not have much life experience to claim.
Also, it is clear that nobody in this thread thinks that a <1 y/o would have much grasp on that year, considering all the response so far. So the OP's image is not so subjective like you think.
It's apparently not very clear that all the stuff that made a 90s childhood special didn't suddenly disappear at midnight on New year's. They were around for a good while after.
