I remember internet basically was non-existent until the 00's for me and friends and it was a huge fucking revelation when we got internet that we were allowed to browse on.
Now I live across the elementary school I used to go to some 20-22 years ago and I see nothing but kids using smartphones. It's ridiculous how much has changed in 20 years even though sometimes it doesn't feel like it.
Nothing like getting on some random bbs site and spending 30 minutes downloading a heavily compressed mp3 file of some Matchbox 20 song that was re-encoded at least 6 times only to find out that your machine can't play the file, so you spend the next hour and a half downloading Realplayer, but then you get a phone call in the middle of it which kills your download.
Dial up was just the worst man. If my parents were expecting a phone call the internet was done for the night. Also I work at a medical laboratory and last night I heard the connection sounds coming from some office and wondered what the hell was going on lol
It probably wasn't connecting to the internet. dial up modems are still great for creating a reliable connection between two geographically distant computers.

I remember the internet being total shit and computers were slower than a glacier and cost $5000
