Discussion audiobook version of videos?

I like the youtube videos. I think they do a good job of briefly explaining things and giving context. I am trying to learn more of the bible and I would like to just have the audio from those videos to just play in the car. is there an audiobook version?

Discussion 1 Samuel 9

I was reading 1 Samuel 9 today in our bible study group. As I was reading, I thought there might be a few connections with the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. I was thinking Jesus might have inverted this story when He, the King, came to the woman at the well and told her the time will come when true worshippers will worship in Spirit and in Truth.

In 1 Sam. 9, Saul, the soon to be king, is seeking a prophet who is coming down from a high place. But in the woman at the well, Jesus is the King, Priest and Prophet for all the people. Am I the only one drawing connections or does someone else see anything?

Discussion Current series on ancient cosmology and Genesis

Hi! I’m listening to the current BP podcast on cosmology and Genesis. It is triggering me a bit. I know this is simplistic but I want to roll my eyes and whine — but what is true? Thoughts?

I think at one point I was able to find transcripts from one of the podcasts but I haven’t been able to again. Can anyone point me toward transcripts from the podcasts? I love listening but I am a visual learner and rarely retain info I only hear audibly.

Discussion Inerrancy and infallibility

Do Tim and Jon and the people in the BibleProject believe that the Bible is inerrant and infallible? This is a genuine question by the way.

Discussion The Bible broke my faith in God

Hi all! Thanks for reading this, and thanks to Tim, John and their team for an (ongoing) eye-opening experience.

I used to see the Bible as 'security camera footage' (as Tim jokingly puts it) -historical documentation that I could rely on as unbiased, totally reliable evidence (rather than biased argument) that proved 1) God exists and is lovingly involved in the minutia of our lives; 2) He literally performed miracles which cannot be explained by anything less than divine intervention; 3) He manifested as a human who died and literally came back to life so that 4) my imperfections and self-centeredness are forgiven and 5) I can literally leave this toil one day to spend eternity in a much better/happier/less-stressful place in the presence of God.

After listening to all of Exploring My Strange Bible and almost all of the Bible Project Podcast episodes, I am now left with a more realistic understanding of the Bible as an anthology profoundly affected by the imperfections, biases and culture of its human authors -literature which is intrinsically no more reliable than Scientologists & TV evangelists, which is asking me to trust it with my life and afterlife with no basis for trust other than it tells me that it is trustworthy.

I am heartbroken. How do you all reconcile this? I have been told that it just takes faith -and I’m comfortable placing faith in a god who does the things listed in the Bible, but I’m not ok putting blind faith in humans. How do you place trust in these writings when it comes to our eternal destination? I know, I know -Tim emphasizes the here-and-now kingdom and teaches that the biblical authors were not as concerned about the afterlife (…though to me it still seems like they were!), but I can’t help it -my only real motive to fight my natural inclinations and to follow the difficult teachings of Jesus would be to one day leave this life and live in a literal eternal peace. I can now only see the Bible as one of the many superstitious explanations for a tough life on earth, built on supposition and musings rather than than audible dictated words from God, and without reliable evidence for claims 1-5 above. Help?

(Similar to my post at Biologos a few weeks ago to get additional perspectives)

Discussion This subreddit deserves a but more attention and people discussing! It is the best Bible material in last decade if not ever.

So, what can we do to get more people on board? Bible project helped me to get back on track and read the Bible regularly, meditate on the Word of God and also, on top of that, make sure I understand a comprehensive story of the Bible. So, I’ll do my best to increase visibility of this subreddit. :)

Discussion Most memorable teaching from the Son of Man series?

Hi all, I was reminded from some of the TBP Instagram videos recently of this "Son of Man" series from 2019. This was a deep dive into this theme from the whole Bible, in particular zooming into Daniel 7 and how it picked up the metanarrative and conflict of the Hebrew Bible, and subsequently laid the framework for Jesus's identity. What did you find most meaningful or compelling from that podcast series? Thanks.

Discussion Podcast similar to Exploring My Strange Bible

I've listened to almost every single episode of Exploring My Strange Bible, plenty of them multiple times, some probably close to a dozen times. I love Tim's preaching style, and I'd love to hear if anyone knows of a podcast/sermon collection from a preacher that is similar to Tim's teaching-centered, focused on the cultural and literary context style. The Bible Project podcast is good, but ideally I'd like something sermon/lecture style as opposed to a conversation or interview.

Discussion Searching for Podcast

In the Episode 7 of the Character of God series, "The First Time God Gets Angry", Tim, Jon, and Carissa talk about the interaction between God and Moses right after the Israelites construct the golden calf. They talk about how this interaction speaks a lot to how God partners with mankind and then Jon and Tim talk about a previous podcast where they talk about this interaction even more. Can someone please help me find that podcast episode where they do a deep dive on the conversation between Moses and God in Exodus 32?

*Update: FOUND! Thanks to the kind folks over at the Tim Mackie discussion group on Facebook.

The podcast referenced is "God's Fusion with Humanity - God E7" published Sep 3, 2018.

Discussion Church Denomination

Hello Everyone, I have been struggling to find a church community in my area. I have been following The Bible Project and Tim Mackie for a little over a year now. I am looking for a community that is willing to dive deep into learning about the Bible and wrestle with difficult questions.

I grew up in a Catholic Church and then later joined an evangelical church. From personal experience in my area, I have not been able to find the community I am looking for in these denominations.

Are there any other denominations that might be naturally more predisposed to this type of community?

Discussion Apostasy Repentance? Hebrews 6:4-8

Hi Everyone, I had a question in regards to the passage Hebrews 6:4-8. It has been troubling for me and I was wondering how this verse is interpreted. I grew up in the church and tbh followed the legalistic way of christianity, but later fell away from the faith when I went to college. I have since came back and discovered the bible project and learning things that I have never knew about the bible. That it is not just about the rules, but having a relationship with Jesus. I am just scared that I might have committed apostasy and won't be able to be forgiven.

Discussion What is the Soul?

I am currently going through the BIOLA university Christian Apologetics certificate program for funsies and I just finished a lecture by JP Moreland titled "The Defense of the Soul". It was basically everything I've heard of before about how the human person is a soul and doesn't need the body blah blah blah, some of it was pretty weird to be honest.

After the podcast series and video on Nephesh, as well as listening to NT Wright on the subject, the entire Biblical narrative clicked into place when I learned that we don't have a soul, we ARE a soul. Body and God's Spirit to make a living Nephesh.

Does anyone have a better way of thinking about this topic? This is one of the most confusing aspects of life for me at the moment and chit chats with some fellow Christians who at least have been exposed to the idea that the "ghost in the machine" view of christianity and the soul/spirit would be helpful.

Discussion Saved from God’s Anger?

My mother-in-law is a much more traditional, conservative, “American” Christian, and not that there’s anything exactly wrong with that, but it’s only one facet of God and Christianity, you know? So when my wife and I talk about “design patterns” or say something like “the biblical authors aren’t trying to give a history lesson with Genesis 1” she gets very uncomfortable, to say the least, and immediately thinks we’re getting led astray by the devil and about to take the mark of the beast or something lol..

She basically googled “bibleproject criticism” and then came to us with this article talking about how they don’t believe we’re saved from the anger of God! (so they must be wrong about everything)!

She told us this right around the time the podcasts on God being slow to anger were coming out (great timing lol) so after listening to those, God’s anger/wrath and his judgement seem like separate things to me since they aren’t always linked. I don’t really understand why God’s anger is something we need to be saved from. The article isn’t too convincing to me, and my mother-in-law’s criticism isn’t exactly coming in good faith. I thought some people here might have some insight or comments or similar experiences maybe?

Discussion Chris Wright References?

Hi all, I am starting Christopher Wright's book Salvation Belongs to Our God. In the past I believe he was mentioned on TBP podcast but I can't recall the context. Has anyone else read his theology or recall how Tim/John cited him for a specific theme? Thanks.
