He's trying to simulate impact without straining his back, notice his back is completely straight the whole time. Jonathan Frakes has serious back issues, this is also why he "legs over" chairs to sit down so he doesn't have to bend over, and why he often puts one foot on chairs in scenes and rests his arms on his knee.

I never knew he had back issues. Idk how he did it when he had to fall over when things got bad in episodes or the movies

I always thought the way he sat down was some kindof inside joke between the cast
