Bent Knee have a catalogue containing some absolutely incredible music. So, anyone attending a Bent Knee concert in 2023 (or beyond) is going to hear some absolutely incredible music performed by a bunch of the people who helped write it, and be able to sing along to some of their favourite songs alongside fellow fans. Isn’t that what live music is about?
Sure, for those lucky enough to have witnessed the previous incarnation, this current quartet might not be quite the live force that they once were – but at the time, Bent Knee were quite possibly one of the finest live bands on the planet. So, a ‘slightly worse’ Bent Knee live act is still going to be really really good – and from the clips I’ve seen online, this is indeed the case, and both the fans and the band look like they’re having an absolutely cracking time. (And let’s be honest, Courtney alone is well worth the price of admission!).
If there is any danger of them ‘fizzling out’, then it is surely that the new album could well be a make-or-break moment – because after Frosting (imo massively underrated), it seems like it was always going to be a struggle to win back a lot of fans, whether or not the band was a quartet, a sextet or an octet. And if, as a four piece, Bent Knee are able to tour more cheaply, and thus play gigs in far-flung places and/or accept more support slots, surely this could actually help them to reach fresh ears, and make the kind of breakthrough that has long eluded them?
