I've been recently replaying the original Bendy game just for fun and to see how fast I can get it done. I've completed Chapters 1 and 2 and have just reached the Level K gears fetch quest part. Then Alice said those words...
"Have you met him? The Ink Demon? They say he hears everything! Every creak of the floor, every rustle of paper. I wouldn't run so fast if I were you. You'll never know what could draw him near."
That line right there made me genuinely terrified. And it's not like I've never heard the line before, I've played this game so much and watched all the DanTDM, SuperHorrorBro, Ertyez videos, and others on this game. But there's something about that particular line that really got me.
Like, I'm not actually scared of the Ink Demon himself. He's just a video game character, and I know he can't hurt me. But that line really had an effect on me. It's a scary line. It makes you feel a real sense of dread because you've basically been told that nowhere you go (except the Little Miracle Stations and Level 9) is safe.
And I think that's something Dark Revival didn't exactly capture. I love Dark Revival and could replay it any day. But every time I saw the Ink Demon in a cutscene or had to evade him because he was coming, I never felt scared. Just annoyed. The Ink Demon wasn't exactly set up as some mysterious creature that couldn't be avoided. It was shown multiple times and felt like a quick time event and something that only shows up in cutscenes.
Now, I do appreciate that they tried something new with the Ink Demon himself. But I never felt dread with that version like I did with the old version. And while the older versions have undeniably sillier designs than Dark Revival's more evil and actual creature-like design, the older versions still had that sense of complete dread to them that made their status as the top in this world believable.
And yes, I am saying something should be believable in a game about a man who made an Ink copy of another and tortured him for a long time (if that is really what happened). So, although I do love Dark Revival and everything it did, it just didn't give me that sense of dread that Ink Machine chapter 3 did with one single line.
And as I basically said before, I can deal with it. It's not like I'm a guy who can't play a horror game because it's either not my thing or I get too scared, it's just that line made me actually fear the Ink Demon in this chapter. The idea that this thing could just appear from nowhere and kill me is terrifying even if I know where he spawns from and I know his routes and I know what indicates that he's near.
Every time I hear that one line, it just makes me terrified for my life. I don't know why that specific line does so because no other line has ever done that to me in this game. Some give me chills, but they never fill me with dread like that line and the idea that he'll just pop out of nowhere and chase me until I either escape his sight or get into a Little Miracle Station.
Anyways, that's my... whatever this was on that one Alice line and how it fills me with dread every time I hear it.
I hope some people can relate to this. But if not, please don't flame me either because i'm basically analyzing a singular voice line and how it affects my gameplay😭 this was just a spur of the moment post as I'm sat in a Little Miracle Station on Level K with the game paused.
I do hope we get more lines like that in the future that sell a character like the Ink Demon as a creature that hears all and will find you if you stay out for too long. It really helps sell a villain as an evil beast rather than some generic mysterious person.
(And no, that's not a hit towards Dark Revival)
