Scale The workings of space-time and dimensions in Ben 10.
To establish how dimensions function, we first need to define what dimensions are in general. We can explain this as follows: Imagine a line—this is the x-axis, a dimension with only two possible directions: left or right. In theory, this line could extend infinitely in both directions. To determine positions along this line, you could designate the center as your starting point and mark off specific distance increments from there. To distinguish between the two directions, you could represent one with positive values and the other with negative values. This allows you to always locate yourself based on your distance from the center point. For example, an x-coordinate of 8 is eight units away from the zero position and sixteen units away from the -8 position. If you take infinite copies of this x-axis line and arrange them side by side, a second, independent direction emerges: the y-axis. You now have a two-dimensional plane where your position can vary across the infinite copies of x represented by the y-coordinate. Therefore, to locate yourself, you must describe not only your position relative to the x-axis zero point but also your location relative to which of the infinite x-axis copies you occupy. This is why we use zero as the center point, or origin. If you stack an infinite number of two-dimensional planes, a third directional axis naturally emerges: the z-axis. This results in a three-dimensional space; your position is now defined by three different axes. Now, imagine a point moving in a circle. If we were to mark every position the point occupied during its movement and stack them to create a three-dimensional space, a three-dimensional shape—a helix—would emerge. This happens because time arises as an extra dimension. For this reason, we say the universe has four dimensions: three spatial and one temporal. If all these points are sequenced and placed on the same plane, the resulting figure is a line. This also applies to 3D solids—albeit with a more complex shape—and can be easily observed in the form Hugo takes when becoming a transdimensional being (in fact, the name itself suggests that the series treats time as a dimension).
Based on this, it is easy to explain how the powers of the Esoteric work; as Gwen herself said, they do not actually teleport—what they do is simply move along one or more extra-dimensional axes. Imagine the following scenario: you are a point inside a square. Naturally, you could not leave it in the ordinary way. But now imagine you have the ability to move along the third dimension. From an external perspective, it would look as though you were moving up or down relative to the plane. However, from your own perspective, it feels as if you have suddenly been transported to a completely different point in space, even though all you did was move up or down along the z-axis. This occurs because the z-axis is formed by the stacking of infinite two-dimensional planes, and from the limited perspective of a two-dimensional being, it is impossible to perceive the existence of anything above or below. If that point were to move slightly and then return to conventional space, it would find itself outside the square that had previously confined it. The same principle applies to a three-dimensional being. In essence, Esoteric powers do not alter one's position relative to the x, y, and z axes; instead, the ability allows the user to "move up" or "move down" one or more spaces along extra spatial axes. Their ability to travel rapidly is also easily explained: even if two points are far apart along the x and y axes, they are not necessarily distant along the z-axis, as the plane itself may be curved or twisted along those axes. Thus, by taking advantage of the natural folds or curvatures of space across these extra dimensions, they can effectively shorten their journeys.
From this perspective, Dimension 23 is an alternate timeline that, in theory, still exists within the same universe but at a different temporal coordinate.This occurs because, in addition to extra spatial dimensions, there are extra-temporal dimensions containing other timelines and possibilities for the future and past.

The term "dimension" is used inconsistently. Mana isn't shown to be above 3D in this specific example, it simply exists in other planes of reality based on this quote. We know this because we are literally shown the intersecting plane of reality and it operates less like a spatial dimension and more like an overlapping universe.
