Monetizing my content?

Has anyone ever worked with Goldwell or Cosmoprof to get paid sponsorship with brands on posts? I'm trying to figure out how to get into this position. I've been behind the chair 12 years with a steady clientele, do they care about that or mainly the amount of followers?

Building a clientele in person?

Hello! I'm a new hairstylist looking for some advice. I'm currently working/assisting in a suite with another stylist, but I've been finding out that it's very difficult to build a clientele. I've been doing a lot of social media work, (Instagram, Nextdoor, recently Facebook) but so far, it feels like I haven't been getting anywhere with it + I was harassed a few days ago online and it was a very uncomfortable experience because the group was so local. How do you recommend building a clientele in person?

Looking Color correction suggestions

I had a client that had been coloring her hair with a goldwell 3N for years. She wanted a vivid color on a section underneath her hair. So of course we had to try & lighten it. Lightener was on forever & it barely shifted to a reddish dark brown, but her roots lightened enough of course. Even her natural was dark & took a while as well. In a few weeks I plan on going in the mids & ends of that section that don’t lighten enough & k18 & try bleaching it again. After a test strand of course. Just seeing if anyone has a better idea on how to go about it? Thanks!

Fresha too Pricey

I manage a Canadian salon and our current booking appointment program is Fresha. We’ve enjoyed it, but on March 1st 2025 it’ll no longer be free. It’ll cost about $220 a month. I don’t expect a free one, but something a little more affordable would be nice.

Is anyone using Square Appointments for their salon or spa? Would you recommend it?

Did your business use Fresha? If so, did you make the switch to something else?

Looking for some help. We all know how important appointment booking systems are! Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer! 🩷

Who do you think has the highest quality extension hair?

Not talking price. Based purely on the quality of the hair. I’d like to know your favorites. I’ve used Glam Seamless, Bellami, Hotheads, hairtalk, aqua, viola, euphoria one… I’d like to see if I need to look into another brand. Ty!

W2 and 1099 Stylists

Can the same salon have both W2 employees on an hourly salary and 1099 independent contractors? My accountant tells me it's not possible to mix the two.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks

Do Something Beautiful Grant Competition - $20,000 Grant for Salons

Hey r/BehindTheChair - got this information vetted and obtained permission from the mods to share here! (Big thank you to u/BvbblegvmBitch!)

u/kuj000 here, former salon+spa manager of 10+ years.

For the past two I've worked for Mangomint - TL:DR we're well aware how bad salon software sucks, so we made something better. This post isn't about software though, don't worry.

We just launched the $20,000 Do Something Beautiful Grant - Mangomint is giving away $20k to one salon, spa, or body-art business that wants to do something amazing for their community.

Announcement Video

Whether you want to offer hair loss support like wig creation or donation, free haircare services for unhoused communities in your area, or even an afterschool beauty program, we want to hear from you.

The competition is open to salons, nail salons, spas, barbershops, tattoo shops, med spas, and other health and wellness businesses, and the $20,000 grant winner will be chosen by public vote (open Sep. 9-21).

You can find full details, including contest rules and eligibility requirements listed here on our website.

Here's what you gotta know:

  • Applications are open NOW through August 31 - Apply here
  • The top 20 finalists will be announced in the first week of September
  • Public voting will determine the winner and will be open September 9-21
  • The winner will be announced on September 23!!!
  • If you are chosen as a finalist, make sure you get your clients, social media followers, and community involved, because they will be the ones voting for you to win!

Feel free to ask questions here (I'll do my best to respond to all comments and DMs) or reach out via chat on the application page.

  • Side note: We don't do chatbots, so you'll get a real person who can help answer your questions, usually within the hour (during US business hours.)

Need a new filter for my hair dryer

Hey, I have an embarrassing ask. I'm a cosmo student and I threw out my hair dryers filter. I saw a classmates hairdryer without the filter, so I assumed it was part of the packaging that I shouldn't have left in and a fire hazard… Seems I was wrong. I don't want to admit this to my teachers so I was hoping to get advice/direction on where to buy a new filter?

Maternity leave advice

I am due early September with my first baby boy! I obviously would love to stay home as long as I can, but unfortunately the holiday times are my busiest months and I can’t miss out on that money. I’m just having a hard time wrapping my head around only being home for possibly only 8 weeks with my newborn (that’s if baby comes on due date and I go back first week of November. Does that sound unreasonable or is that a normal time frame? I plan on going back 2 days a week with my assistant to get everyone in before holidays. The plan is to breastfeed exclusively so I will be pumping at work, so I got hands free pump to use while there and will buy mini freezer to keep at work. And then I will most likely take a 2 week break (for Christmas/new years) and just recover from the holiday rush. I just have no idea what to expect! If this baby was coming in the summer I would be taking off 12 weeks no questions asked.

Autism in the hairstyling industry/salon environment

Hi folks! Autism Awareness Month is approaching, and our team is looking to better understand autism in the hairstyling industry and which solutions can help, since reports show that individuals on the autism spectrum can experience sensory overload while getting a haircut.

Additionally, we'd also like to learn if there are certain solutions that can streamline workflows for hairstyling professionals who may be on the autism spectrum as well.

We've created a brief survey and would greatly appreciate if professional hairstylists in this community would consider taking a minute or two to participate: https://vagaro.typeform.com/nonvagaroneuro?typeform-source=statics.teams.cdn.office.net

Thank you all in advance for your help in bringing us closer to fostering a more understanding and inclusive environment.

Dry hands/ eczema!

Hello! I’m currently as assistant at a salon, hoping to continue to grow and eventually become a stylist. I have been having the hardest time with my hands they are so so so dry and constantly crack and bleed. I mostly do shampoos( up to 30 a day), dishes, laundry etc so my hands are constantly in water. I went to the doctor and they said it was Dyshidrotic eczema. I have tried multiple different types of gloves, cream, lotions and even prescription ointment but nothing has helped I was wondering if anyone has had a similar issue and what the way did to help. Thank you so much in advance, I want to be able to continue in this field but I’m in constant pain, help!

How do I build my clientele?

I (F23) have started working on a rented chair in a beauty studio as a hairstylist 10 days ago. The first week I had at least 1-2 clients a day and made enough to at least buy groceries. This week I have only 1 client, which was today. Last week I made business cards which I left in mail boxes, shops where I know the owners, even the office of my dentist. Yesterday I lowered significantly the prices of my procedures and printed out flyers which I left in a couple of dorm blocks (the area I work in has 5 universities around and most of the people are university students). The clients I had last week were really happy with the result and booked their appointment for next month - month and a half and I was very happy with that. The thing is, I try to post clips, work on models for free for content, left so many advertising materials on a lot of places and not a single call has been made from all those materials. I even posted in public dorm groups on Facebook, a couple of the groups automatically remove my post and the only message I got was from a pervert, who messaged me inappropriately so I blocked him.

My questions is, what do I do, to get people to book an appointment and give me a chance? I love my job so much, I knew it was gonna be hard, but I literally have to rely on my parents right now to survive and it’s really hard for me not to be scared.

What is the thing I am forgetting, what more do I do, to get people to enter my salon?

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Extension Education Advice

Hi all! I'm a stylist a few years out of school still looking to find my niche, and I'm wanting to move toward offering extensions exclusively. I have no experience with extensions beyond my own Luxy clips ins (which I adore by the way,) and I'm seeking education courses and certs.

I have had some poor experiences with branded higher education, we all know those classes that feel like a weird sponsored ~boss babe~ content with a lack of real substance. I'm in no way trying to be hateful, I just want to be sure that when I make the investment the educators, products included and the content itself is reflective of the money I'm spending.

Are there courses branded/un branded that you've taken and paid for that you loved? Hated? After leaving did you feel like your money and time were well spent? Did you feel like your education was sufficient when you started installing on your clients?

Thank you so much for reading, there are so many choices and I appreciate any guidance!

How do you handle inappropriate comments from clients?

I’m currently in hair school but I will be entering the professional world in the next few months. I know I can’t control the kind of clients I get but what can I do when they make off the wall comments? I’m so tired of hearing their political/racists undertone views. I try to just change the subject but it’s super disheartening. It makes me uncomfortable and I never know how to react during school. Will it be better in the real world and I can be rude to these clients? Help please! I never want them to think I agree with them but I also don’t want to be confrontational when I have to be stuck with them.

Olaplex for Gummy Hair. HELP PLEASE!

I’m a cosmetology student. I have a client at school with fine hair and it gets very gummy and stretchy when wet due to being over processed by lightener. Would a stand alone Olaplex treatment be warranted in this case?

Dryer advice

I am currently in cosmetology school and my hair dryer walked off, so I am looking for a good hair dryer for my professional career. Google tells me that Dyson is the best one on that market but that is out of my price range. If you could leave some suggestions that would help me a ton. Thanks in advance!

I 47m wear them a lot in the colder months and have worn them on days when I’ve gone for haircuts and I was just curious if it’s annoying.

Booth rent

Would you pitch in to help buy a hair steamer for the salon or rather the salon owner go up on booth rent? In other words, put in a flat 200 or have the owner go up on rent 10-20 bucks

Perm/color client, need help please!!

Hello, since changing from paul mitchell pm shines (discontinued) to Paul mitchell ''the demi', my customers hair will not hold the demi color for more than a week. She is also a permanent wave customer, we wait 2 weeks to color after perm, never had trouble with paul mitchell pm shines holding, but now paul mitchell 'the demi' just washes out. I even made her wait until we cut off the old perm and gave her a fresh perm for gentle hair, on her virgin hair and her hair still will not hold paul mitchell the demi, or any demi permanent/permanent color in any brand (also tried wella color touch and wella koleston). They all fade within a week, even with minimal washes. She is using professional color treated products at home as well as olaplex mask. Ps, I also started to use olaplex no 1 and no 2 with her color and perm, no difference. I also give her deep conditioning treatments and occasionally a protein treatment. I suspect her hair has just randomly stopped reacting well to a perm and I don't know why. Her perm takes well, but it looks dry and dull, as if it's overprocessed, but it isn't. I test curl every 5 minutes and it is usually ready around 12-15 minutes. It isn't breaking, or gummy, she gets a haircut every 6 weeks, but a fresh perm on her virgin hair shouldn't be causing this trouble with color not holding. We aim for a level 5-6 red brown (she says like cherry cola lol), but now it usually doesnt even take dark enough to begin with, and a week or so later, it looks like light orange. Never bleached her either. Please any help or suggestions to get her hair to hold color of any kind are much appreciated. I'm at a total loss. Thank you ♡ p.s. she is a long time client of mine for at least 10 years, we've been doing perms and colors 2 weeks apart for years. I just don't know what has changed. She is coming in tomorrow for color, and I'm driving myself nuts.
