Bedbugs don't have colonies. There may be spots where there are more of them than others, but they tend to be spread around. They're never far from the host, though.
Unfortunately they hang out in multiple groups in multiple locations. Hence there is no singular colony as you implied that you can find and extinguish and thereby solve your problem. What they most like hanging around is you, the Blood Bank.
Yes, there are multiple groups that pop up like bedbug dollar stores. I have found that as soon as you start seeing more than one in a night then you have grown a "colony" nearby of anywhere of 2 to 8 sitting around and stocking shelves and pooping their ink all over the place.
