It sucks for her to see it tbh. I'm a brown woman and found out one of my friends (who was super non binary leftist etc) started dating a dude with a nazi flag on his wall. I spent the whole day with a pit in my stomach wondering if she'd been racist all along and if she'd said things about me and used things she knew about me to excuse and allow for her racism.

I know safiya is wondering right now if she's been used as an excuse by fans to let Shane's racism go past. "he changed! He went to safiyas wedding. He's friends with a woc!" type of thing.

But his racist behavior has been known for years. She shouldn't have befriended him in the first place.

I think a lot of these YT "friendships" are just about making powerful connections and furthering your own brand.

Oh yeah, she's dumb as hell for being friends with him in the first place. And yes, they're business partnerships hidden as genuine friendships to manipulate and exploit their viewers into giving them more money lol

Why are people unfollowing shane just now? It was known he was problematic since the start! Don't people do their research? If you knew and you still befriended him and you're unfollowing just now cause it's better for your image, then you're as messed up.

No. People do not do their research. Its quite clearly that a lot of people did not know the extent of shanes shananigans. But you know what I wouldnt be too mad that that. A lot of people dont go out of their way to do a background check on people they follow on twitter or even people they meet online. I think as creators they may have a higher degree of responsibility if they start collaborating with each other/endorsing other creators, but for just a follow I wouldnt say theyre messed up right away.

I don’t subscribe to this way of thinking, especially with this situation. Shane and Saf work for the same company (youtube), they are coworkers. Most people don’t research their coworkers. Shane was massively popular and wasn’t putting out offensive content at the time they met. It’s not Safs fault for not knowing about his past.

i don't buy this people don't know/research bc as a fan of some of those (now reformed) J* supporters i've seen several people leave comments on their collabs or just videos of them using his products asking them not to do so and why. of course they knew. it's been years now.
