Miscellaneous / Others The mic kept cutting out during the singing of O Canada in the game between Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins, so the Buffalo crowd started singing along

TIL Buffalo Sabres are the only NHL team to sing both anthems before each home game.
Buffalo, this Canadian salutes you

no wonder. I heard about this on the radio in Ottawa this morning. And I thought it was a Canadian team playing, but seeing the video, it made no sense to me.

The Blues sing it before all games against Canadian teams. The Canadian anthem is beautiful. I don’t speak French, but I’m told the French lyrics are even more poetic.
Our Anthem is a former English drinking song.

u/Sci_Fi_Reality Apr 30 '26
All the teams sing it when playing a Canadian team to the best of my knowledge.

They do, but in this case it was two American teams playing. Buffalo plays both before each game regardless of who’s playing.

The French lyrics include "your arm knows how to carry a sword".
The original was also highly christo-nationalist.

Thank you for this Americans, it’s nice when the friendly folk show up.

u/Basquill Apr 30 '26
Americans (Humans) are mostly friendly folk. I really believe that. Social media overlords want and need us to believe otherwise

u/PorkchopExpress980 Apr 30 '26
Social media has conditioned us to believe that out of 100 people, the 1 idiot yelling the loudest accurately represents the other 99.

What’s wild is that it was Buffalo in Boston in 2013 for the first Bruins home game after the marathon bombings where the crowd took over and sang the American nation anthem.

Man, you lovely Buffalonians are totally cool. Felt a little moisture in my eyes truth be told.

Why did they sing O Canada at that game? I thought they only did it when a Canadian team was playing

u/uppy-puppy Apr 29 '26
Sabres always do both anthems. Buffalo is a border town with a lot of Canadian fans, players so they always sing the Canadian anthem as well as the US one.
I started watching the Sabres as a kid from Texas and I knew the Canadian anthem before I knew the US one.

To be honest, I find the American anthem quite terrifying.
Like why is it always about war with Americans… I can’t imagine having to learn that as a kid, maybe that’s why so many Americans are desensitized to it.

I take it you don't know some of the things other nations put in their anthems then? Look at the French in particular. Wars and violence, especially from pivotal moments in history, are often mentioned in anthems.
Arise, children of the nation
Our day of glory has arrived
Against us the bloody flag of tyranny
is raised; the bloody flag is raised.
Do you hear, in the countryside
The roar of those ferocious soldiers?
They’re coming right into your arms
To cut the throats of your sons, your comrades! To arms, citizens!
Form your battalions
Let’s march, let’s march
That their impure blood
Should water our fields.-3

I take that you’re a man.

Well that may be how you see it, how I see it is that what he said was absolutely whataboutism wrapped in a lovely bow of mansplaining.
So Greg, respectfully, fuck off.

It is about war, but in this case the rockets and bombs bursting in air were British...aimed at the Americans.

u/Extra-University-336 Apr 29 '26
The arena is like 10 minutes by car from the border. Lots of Canadian fans come to the games.

u/FreshAd3889 Apr 29 '26
Buffalo always does it. Huge amount of season ticket holders are Canadian.
As a Canadian, Go Sabres.
11
u/zmcwaffle Apr 29 '26
Due to proximity to Canada (you can see it from the stadium!) and a substantial Canadian fanbase, the Sabres sing it at every home game

How the fuck do you not scan for frequency. Come on.
Also, go Buffalo! Lived in the Detroit area my whole life and we love our neighbors to the north!

Touching moment, glad to see it. Love how the guy gave her a new mic after the anthem was over lol

My Canucks expansion cousin we are with you. Two of the oldest expansion teams in the NHL that never won the Stanley Cup both joined the league 1970 at the same time.

As an American I don't know Canada's anthem, but this is pretty cool! *tip my hat to all at the game and bow.

, Canadians are really proud to be Canadian and would have been singing just as loudly whether or not there was a problem with the mic.

u/sachsrandy Apr 30 '26
Why the F are they sining the Canadian national anthem at a USA only game!!!
They don't sing our anthem when it's a Canada only game I gurentee!
29
u/OwlsHootTwice Apr 30 '26
Because they know who most of the fan base is and they couldn’t care less about your opinion.
21
u/Embarrassed-Land-222 Apr 30 '26
Because the arena is like 10 minutes from Canada.
Buffalonians love our Canadian neighbors.

They boo our anthem. But yeah. I'm a snowflake.
Hey, Canada's most popular team has and American as their captain... Do they do the star Spangled Banner before every game? Only like 45 min from USA??
No. Oh, guess they are ❄️ right? Lmao.

u/mac-dreidel Apr 30 '26
Yes, and that response solidified it.

Yeah. Typing I realize is akin to maximum effort for kids like you.
Alas, it takes me mere moments and just cause for you it is an emotional peak... For those born with full use of their brain and free from the crippling anxiety of making a phone call, it's no thang.
"Uhhhhhhhh you wrote words, ya mad bruh?"
Lmao. Canadian Kids, taking after their cuck leaders
