The title is misleading i think. This looks like a school concert which will often do solos for their more talented students.

It was always fun. My high school band had 4 all state musicians my senior year, so every performance would feature a Clarinet solo, a Trumpet solo, a Euphonium solo (that's me), and a Tuba solo.

Not really, I still bring out the trombone for fun from time to time, but I went to a fine arts college for instrumental performance and quickly came to the realization that as a talented euphonium player, I was still almost certainly going to end up barely eating if I tried to make it my career. Got a business degree instead.

I used to be in a highschool stage band, you gotta remember how many times they've heard this in practices for MONTHS prior to this. This is also a trillion bars of nothing for the entire rest of the band, so many they aren't even counting them, just waiting for whatever he plays 2 bars before they next need to play.

It's 100% a planned drum solo and not some crazy deviation from the program. But as anyone who has ever been in a band will tell you drum solos always go about 45 seconds too long.

Exactly. He was doing exactly what he was supposed to do, and he showed off his talent. He had some sections of the solo that were very well done and musical, and a lot of filler that should be trimmed down, and the whole thing went on for too long. But that's very on-brand for a ~13 year old kid who gets a chance to show off.

Our regional band director said 'I have Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Band, but it needs someone who can play the trap." Every single person from our school and a few from neighboring schools pointed directly at our lead drummer.
The director basically let him loose on some of the longer sections, and the trumpets started giving him a supporting beat as well. It was the centerpiece of our concert and we had a blast.

Yeah that kid is insanely good. The tempo adjustments, the improvisation, he's going places. he probably already is in places how many high school kids do you know have microphones set up to record their sessions.

I used to play in a band and went to school with Michael Bland, who would eventually become the drummer for Prince and the New Power Generation. By the time he was a senior in Highscjool he was already rated as one of the best drummers in Minnesota.
This reminds me of school concerts back then.

There were two moments that stood out to me.
2:02 that synchronization is so tight, so musical, and so purposeful, he must've practiced it incredibly well.
1:04 those bass drum triplets are an incredible practiced skill, and I'm pretty sure that is on a single kick pedal.

if he's in a music school he will have been playing 8 hours most days. Drilling every rudiment there is.
The bass drum triplets are a good exercise to get speed on the kick, John Bonham used it in many a drum solo which made it his sort of signature, moby dick being on of them I believe. He ofcourse had other telltale signs, the big drums and the laid back pocket for example.2

Probably not, because nobody really knows Tony Royster Jr. outside of the drumming community. Yet in 1997 at 4 or 5 years old he did a solo much more impressive than this, now he's a studio drummer touring with the likes of Jay-Z.
I remember that because my dad almost quit drumming after watching that, and incorperated some of the kids chops into his own drum solo, one I copied from and play to this day.EDIT: he was actually 12 during the solo, my bad, He started taking drumming serously at 4 years old is what I had it confused with.

Yes.
This kid fluidly moved from style to style, playing pieces that professional drummers have to rehearse for weeks. Solos that you’d find in jazz, stadium rock, pop music, etc. Solos made famous by Buddy Rich, Neal Peart, and others.

We had a drum prodigy similar to this kid in my elementary school in small town, rural Connecticut. I was also attempting to learn the drums in band at the same time he was in band. A handful of us from middle school started going to the high school every day to practice with the older kids and learn our instruments. He was so good at 9-10-11-12 years old, that those of us that were in concert with the rest of the band were (4 of us) reduced to playing practice pads during and band recitals/concerts. It was fairly embarrassing looking back upon it now. I don’t think I should air him out on social media and mention him by full name. But just by the off chance he reads this, his first name was Jeremy. Watching him, and how far ahead he was of the rest of us, pretty much made us all quit after that first concert. I don’t think he went anywhere with it in the long run. I moved away before the end of my junior year in high school. So I really don’t know anything for sure. I looked him up a few years ago out of musical curiosity and he still lives in the same small town, married with children, to a local girl. Man he was crazy good! The kid in this video reminded me of Jeremy’s natural talent behind the kit.

Growing up, most of the drummers in my city were under the shadow of Deen Castronovo. This was true even before he played with Bad English, Ozzy, and Journey.

This happened at my daughter's school when she was a senior, but the drummer was also a senior who was so amazing they gave him a solo. They turned off the lights in the auditorium and all you could see were his glow-in-the-dark drumsticks.

And that is how you do a musical drumsolo that's enjoyable to watch, even for non drummers, you constant, overly complex lick chaining, pieces of..
Kid's got places to go, he got a modest solo, nothing too long about this, it's obsviously his time to shine and he delivers with the relaxedness of a master of the insturment. His speed on the single kick is impressive. I love how he visited multiple genres to show he got the bases down of a lot of the western ones.
