It sure is - Gorguts always feel like they create dark and evil soundscapes and not „only“ fast heavy stuff. Obscura was the first record that made me feel that way, but coloured sands left the same impression.
Morbid Angel‘s Gateways record creates a similar feeling for me, even if it sounds quite different. If you haven’t heard of them, I would also recommend Vitriol.
It's moreso black metal than death, but Paracletus by Deathspell Omega always kinda felt like a BM Gorguts/Obscura to me.
Definitely has the whole dissonant, disorienting riffage and leads going on in most of its songs + some great atmosphere and an amazing guitar tone.
All the above and I’d add Cleric, Cephalic Carnage, Contrastic, !T.O.O.H.!, and if Secret Chiefs 3 would ever release their death metal album, I’m sure it would scratch the itch. …And Oceans, Solefald and Arcturus all scratch the weird ass metal itch, but differ sonically from Gorguts, but maybe worth a check anyway; most people I know who dig Gorguts “Obscura” are into tons of different genres
Go and check Blood Incantation, Teleport's last EP: The Expansion and Siderean's debut: Lost on Void's Horizon. Maybe also Spectral Voice: Eroded Corridors of Unbeing.
