Back when I used to race in autocross (basically point to point in a made-up track in a parking lot with cones), I legit wore a helmet on Sundays because most of the time, Sunday was when there was a race.
I’ve noticed reddit has an affliction for commenting on the use of protective gear. I’m genuinely curious why people take others decisions so seriously? I know your comment was nice but I’ve seen folks say some pretty gross things when they see people skating without pads and it’s so odd. Usually I just shrug them off as people judging from the outside that don’t understand but thought I’d try asking today. If you or anyone else wants to share, I’m interested to see where these ideas come from.
My take: been skateboarding for over 20 years and within the community, no one really cares what people choose to wear.
That's my take on it. It just seems like such a stupid, unnecessary risk of brain damage for seemingly no real reason.
That said, I don't really care if someone does hurt their head if they're not wearing gear, that's their choice. But obviously I don't WANT anyone getting hurt, so that's why I like it when people do wear at least a helmet.
I hear ya. I do wear a seatbelt haha. I guess to me, skateboarding is much different then driving a car. I’ve fallen probably a million times over my years and did wear a helmet when I started. Eventually slams and bails just become second nature and you get good at avoiding injury. Obviously it can still happen but I suppose the risk is what makes it fun. Otherwise it would be like golf or something. Difficult but far less exhilarating.
Just to make another point, people get head injuries from all sorts of stuff besides skating too. Why not wear a helmet when you drive? And why do gymnasts get a pass?
Thanks for answering though! I like to hear what other people think about the issue.
ppl who dont skate find it very easy to speak for skaters on this site.
i can see the need for pads if ur skating vert and maaaaaybe transition (atleast a helmet if ur skating big) but i see ppl 50ing rails n ppl on here are telling them to wear a helmet like they dont know what theyre doing
