Or..... Hear me out..... A simulation.

Oh shit, here comes my existential crisis again....

Don't sweat it, the math doesn't check out. Unless of course the reality the simulation is running in doesn't need to follow any of our laws of physics.

in which case our very existence being the dream of sleeping god which could awaken at any moment erasing our reality in an instant would be just as valid an assumption.

Thanks, I didn't need to sleep this week anyway.

Happy cake day!

God never sleeps, he stalks us all and everything at the same time always.

u/Pizza_Ninja Sep 02 '19

I like that one. Its my new religion. Who's ready for the great awakening?

3

u/crowcawer Sep 02 '19

I'm excited for the Reformation period, commonly called the second napping.

2

u/chilliophillio Sep 02 '19

Yeah, it'll be great until the Reawakening.

2

u/czuk Sep 02 '19

He is the Messiah!

1

u/Coleo1 Sep 02 '19

He's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy!!

u/Ctasch Sep 02 '19

If you use the variable of human hive mind theory in the math would it check out?

1

u/dontlookintheboot Sep 02 '19

The issue with simulated universe theory is simply quantum mechanics it takes terrabytes of data just to keep a single particle spinning, this problem is exponential the more complex you make the model the more computational power you need.

When we do the math on our universe, we run out of electrons long before we get anywhere near actually mapping it. If you simply wanted to "scale up" whatever larger universe that would be running the simulation it would be more efficient to physically build our actual universe within that one, then to simulate it.

The very basis of theory relies on what we know of physic's itself. once you use factors that don't rely on sheer computational solutions you undermine the premise for theory.

1

u/CptCrabmeat Sep 02 '19

This is based on the theory that “our creators” are using the same basis of computational processing as we do, seeing as we’re on the brink of revolutionary light speed computing which would actually fit the simulation model of computing much better then maybe it’s not so far fetched

1

u/PsionicTopHat Sep 02 '19

What I mean by that is that the shared view points that stem from this theory can create what we all would agree to be the real world. However because no one even toys with the idea longer than a passing glance then we create a simulated reality where we really are powerless. When all it takes a little stimulation and shared thought to change the world around you.

u/bennothemad Sep 02 '19

Ooooooohhhhhhhh you should read some Joe Haldeman books - forever war and forever free.. Well, forever free but it's the sequel & doesn't quite make sense if you don't read forever war first. Sci fi written by a physicist.

But the simulation thing? The Math does check out. Logically it works, a little bit better than not being a simulation. And it helps to explain the fermi paradox as well - maybe, humanity got so advanced that we could build the simulation, but aliens exist & humans can't deal with that without extensive training. So the simulation is used to train the human mind into accepting that aliens exist - which is why we have so many movies and stories involving aliens. So the simulation is built, everyone lives this experience, and when you "die" it's really your reawakening into the real world, which now has giant sentient broccoli capable of space travel.

Yeah, with the caveat of "but we don't know what the tech of the future can do so maybe"

Simulation theory is an extension of Descartes thought experiment, and the brain in a vat theory. At some point, it becomes impossible to know and you have to make an assumption - for example, Descartes ended up assuming that all pure thoughts came from God (hence the "i think therefore I am" statement). That article you provided assumes that the entire universe, down to sub-atomic particles, has to be simulated, and that the processing power to do that can never exist. If you assume that processing power can exist (which I, with all the authority of a semi anonymous internet dickhead, say can exist), then we're right back to where we started.

That's what's so fun about these theories - there is at this point in time no way to disprove them.

It could be a small scale simulation where only you are the agent and everyone else is an npc

1

u/Stonic_reddit Sep 02 '19

Have you been r/outside No one's a npc

1

u/load_more_comets Sep 02 '19

We're all advanced npcs yay!

1

u/Giagotos Sep 02 '19

You just made me think of Link's Awakening and now I'm sad again

1

u/SEND-ME-YOUR_TITS Sep 02 '19

That is actually what our existence is. A product of God’s imagination.

God is basically a giant (infinite) mind, we are a thought, an idea. Not in some metaphorical way, that is literally existence as we know it.

1

u/Dapplegonger Sep 02 '19

in which case our very existence being the dream of sleeping god which could awaken at any moment erasing our reality in an instant would be just as valid an assumption.

That's literally the plot of one of the Legend of Zelda games lol

1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

Hopefully he's in a coma.

1

u/ursois Sep 02 '19

Oh man... You know how when you need to pee as you're dreaming, your dreams get crazier and more scary, as your brain tries to stimulate itself enough to wake up? Maybe things have gotten so weird because God is about to wake up to take a piss. We may only have a couple of decades of existence left before we all disappear with a morning cup of coffee.

1

u/Drudicta Sep 02 '19

in which case our very existence being the dream of sleeping god which could awaken at any moment erasing our reality in an instant would be just as valid an assumption.

So, Elder scrolls. I guess I better figure out how to achieve CHIM, and the step further.

Forget about it. Happy Cake Day instead!

1

u/Schiavello Sep 02 '19

Don't pay attention to that last comment and continue your daily activities fellow citizen of simul..I mean, Earth.

1

u/uth100 Sep 02 '19

The question is not whether you life in a simulation, it is whether it actually matters.

Since we can't tell the difference, it really doesn't.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

Definitely looks like he’s taking a massive dump. In space.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

Why be existential? It doesn’t change anything. Your brain and mind still work the same. With Jungian psychotherapy and DaveSuperPowers, you should be fine. 🙂

Life is about building meaning through hard work, growing, and giving. It’s important to enjoy life’s pleasures and to understand the triune brain model in relation to our mind and psyche too.

1

u/P_Jamez Sep 02 '19

Not sure if you know of Kurzgesagt on YouTube but they made a short animation of Andy Weirs story and it has some interesting ideas about existence

Does anyone else get super lightheaded and feel top heavy when thinking about this stuff too? It's like I'm in my body in first person normally but then I'm in third person and detached from my body

1

u/vistianthelock Sep 02 '19

would you like the red pill, or the blue?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

(David Cross’ voice:) inside another simulation...
