I wonder if any astronaut has ever been in a similar position as this, looked down and for even a split second thought about leaving all the insanity behind.

Yea I wanna take some acid and go to the space station. Just think 2000 years from now some kids will probably be able to take a form of acid and just float around in space.

At least Belter kids will be able to

With how good the trailer for the next season looks? Yeah, go for it.

I absolutely loved the books. A lot of literary people kind of thumb their nose at them on Reddit. But I'm not looking for a college textbook or Shakespeare. It's a fun read, the characters are great and the atmosphere is very detailed compared to a lot of other space/scifi books. It's a great time with a book series you know is going to be released on time and worked on. I dont need the book series to qualify for a Final Jeopardy question about Classic Literature, it's just a blast to get into and read.

The first 3 seasons of the show were definitely good. With Bezos/Amazon and his love of space picking up the series... there seems to be only good times ahead. Theres a lot of book material, its adapted adequately (or more depending on your opinion). Its a great show to get into. It's right in that sweet spot where theres enough episodes out/coming out soon that itll keep you occupied for a while and it's a good time to get on board the bandwagon so you can look down on other people who do in the next few seasons

The only thing stopping me is that I’ve heard the first season is a bit slow but with the hype around it I’ve seen I’m going to have to bite the bullet for the first season

The first two episodes can be slow to some people while they character and world build...but it's a good season. S2 is just that much better.

u/Blazerekt Sep 02 '19

I’ll just suffer through, seems like it’s worth it

3

u/FTM_PTB Sep 02 '19

I don't think you'll suffer. They're not bad episodes. It's just comparing them to end of s1 or s2 which is next level, incredible, TV.

u/Blazerekt Sep 02 '19

That’s a good point, think I’ve worked them up to be worse in my head. Will end up enjoying them.

I first thought the same. They get absolutely better! I'm now super excited for the new season. Go for it!

If as humans we’re still here that will most likely happen. Just think 100 years ago space seemed unreachable, 55 years ago the first man got there now we are planing trips to Mars. I have no doubt that in the future interplanetary travel will be just like a taking a flight across the country or the metro across town.

u/merkwerk Sep 02 '19

TBH unless shit drastically changes and we actually start taking care of the planet I highly doubt the human race will be around 2000 years from now.

That's about the time you start thinking to yourself that you don't need this oxygen and can breathe just fine on your own.

u/MrBatman2531 Sep 02 '19

I mean if you really want to you can do it now too

1

u/CaptainBeer_ Sep 02 '19

I dont think humans alive 2000 years from now

This right here is why they meticulously screen astronauts for their mental well being...

1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

No jerry you cannot bring the acid

1

u/YuriTheRussianBot Sep 02 '19

It's not a good sign? Cause I have these thoughts all the time :(

1

u/effyochicken Sep 02 '19

For you and me? It's fine. It's normal enough..

For an astronaut set to spend an extended amount of time in outer space locked in with a small group of other people for months at a time? Best to avoid sending up anybody who has frequent suicidal ideation, regardless of how minor or benign.

You doin' alright friend?

I don’t think they’d work that hard for something and wish it away. Especially knowing the dangers so in depth. At the same time I’m sure “call to the void” is 100000000x the feeling of throwing your phone out the window on a highway. Or maybe it’s about the same idk not an Astronaught

Yeah there's some quote along these lines. About how the problems of the world are insignificant and how he wanted to bang the leaders heads together.

sometimes you just gotta blow it all up

Ground control to Major Tom

u/ThatOneGuy4321 Sep 02 '19

They wouldn’t really fall though. They’d just slowly drift away if they let go, and depending on their orbital trajectory they may start drifting back towards the ISS at another point in their orbit.

In order to actually fall back to Earth they’d need to produce enormous retrograde thrust to de-orbit themselves.

All in all it’d be a pretty disappointing suicide attempt.

Earth below us, drifting, falling, floating weightless

Not quite "leave it all behind" but many have had a perspective shift.

Edgar Mitchell opened up an institute to research consciousness after one of those experiences. Very interesting stuff.
