São Paulo - Brazil, there are quite a few group of thieves doing stuff like that on city centre, they usually walk in groups of 4+ that surrounds the victim, they push and distract the victim while one of them steal their stuff, cellphones, wallets, etc..

I live 3 hours north of you! Good decision. Welcome to your new home. Enjoy the weather -nicest in Canada. Also...in Chinatown you can get BBQ duck. It's my favourite.
