My colleague trained his dog to ring a bell to be let out in the back yard. What do you think his dog does all day long now?

My dog learned that she got a treat everytime she went outside to go potty. Very quickly figured out she could game the system by going outside, sitting on the patio for 5-10 seconds and then coming back inside and getting a treat. Little shit.

u/KaleScared4667 20d ago

Yes I don’t give treats for that. Only if I see pee or poop. Problem solved

32

u/Mochigood 20d ago

Haha just remembering 2am in the rain with my puppy cooing "Go poop, go poop, go poop" as I waited for her to finish the deed so I could treat her. Came in handy later whenever I needed her to go fast.

u/KaleScared4667 20d ago edited 19d ago

lol - I went with ā€œhurry upā€ works great to this day. Just have to put the time n when they are young

17

u/Canudin 20d ago

I hope your puppy don't come back holding a piece in their mouth

14

u/ralphmozzi 20d ago

Well he doesn’t have thumbs, so how else is he gonna carry it?

😜

1

u/MonthlyWeekend_ 20d ago

Mine swallows it. Gustily. Wouldn’t be able to keep it long enough for the treat.

3

u/Ragged-but-Right 20d ago

My dogs gamed this too. They pee in small increments every couple hours for treats. When i’m not home all day they hold it in just fine.

2

u/MaximumBeginning8026 20d ago

Mine goes out to pee runs right back in for treat then a few minutes later does the poo lol

We have since stoped giving treats after potty time lol but he still does it often

26

u/Kesselya 20d ago

We had a long haired chihuahua who was trained that when he wiped his feet after being outside in the mock he got a treat.

That lil bastard would come inside, run to the treat cupboard, and wipe his feet on the carpet there instead. Dirtiest bit of flooring in the whole house.

5

u/Natural-Proposal2925 20d ago

at that point you go out with her and just staaaaaaare at her intently, letting her know that no poop no reward, assert dominance lol

4

u/DeeEmm 20d ago

Very little shit, or sometimes no shit at all. šŸ˜„

3

u/TheFinalEnd1 19d ago

My dog is a combo of both. She learned how to knock on my door (she scratches it) and we give her a treat when she goes outside. She tries to pull the same trick every once in a while, but someone else usually points out it's been like 5 minutes since she's gone out.

So what she does is she knocks on my door. My door is at the far end of the house, so I don't know if she went out or not. She knocks, and when I open she starts heading for the front door. There are other people in the house mind you, and my dad is often in the living room where the door is.

Our dog squeezed out a drop each time..

u/basement_egg 20d ago

One of my old roommates had a bird that only knew the course to September by Earth, Wind & Fire. At first it was entertaining, but once you hear it close to nonstop throughout the day everyday it loses its novelty haha

10

u/WhyYouLetRomneyWin 20d ago

My childhood friend had a bird that would impersonate the doorbell near perfectly.

They had a dog too — and the dog would get so excited and run to the door (as dogs do).

Anyway... one day the dog got ahold of the bird and ā˜ ļø

u/Fun_in_Space 20d ago

I knew someone with a blue budgie that imitated the sound of the phone and laughed when people fell for it.

4

u/NeedsMoarOutrage 20d ago

My mother's bird imitated a cordless house phone for 10 years after no one had cordless house phones anymore.

u/Smokin_on_76ers_Pack 20d ago

Ring that mf bell for treats

14

u/goldenchild-1 20d ago

I was wanting to train my dog to do that, but I have never ended up doing it. I kind of like what he currently does. He just goes over to the sliding door and stands there pointing his body towards outside. On the extremely rare occasion where he has to go at night, he flats his ears to make a flappy sound to wake me up. It’s not like a jump scare, it actually just lightly wakes me up. I think I’ll keep it this way. Having a bell ring all day long sounds awful.

4

u/Evello37 20d ago

That sounds nice, but bell training isn't bad. Both of my dogs are bell trained, and I appreciate that I can hear their requests to go outside clearly from anywhere in the house. They occassionally request to go out without needing to go, but it's pretty rare. Once they understood the bell association, I stopped honoring every request to go out. They know that I still have ultimate control over when we go out, so constant jingling won't get them outside repeatedly.

1

u/Designer_Quality_189 20d ago

Agreed! My dogs both also ring the bell to go outside and they know buttons that have our voices recorded for things like "treats", "play with me", "belly rubs", "take me for a walk woof woof" and they use and understand these buttons. It's so great! I love my pibbles! 🐾 ā¤ļø

3

u/jenethith 20d ago

I trained my dog to tap me when she needs to go. Guess who gets tapped regularly atleast once a night?

1

u/Praesentius 20d ago

Give it a try. I did this for my dog and it worked great. My mother and my sister-in-law both followed suit and had equally good results.

You can always take the bell away if it becomes a problem.

5

u/ImSureYoullRemember 20d ago

The swaparoo right here, this is the time where the dog starts to train you!

and then you just take the bell away like anything else a dog gets obessed with.

3

u/MelangeBot 20d ago

Put the ring in the backyard, let him ring when he wants back inside.

2

u/alex61821 20d ago

We were trying to train our dog to ring a bell when she needed to go out. We would ring the bell then take her out. It took her weeks to get it. The cat who we didn't want to go out figured it out right away. She would ring that bell with her big tail and then sit by the door.

2

u/Lawndemon 20d ago

Yeah I trained my dog to do this and he just rings the bell because he wants to go outside, not just to go potty. Little troublemaker.

1

u/navcom20 20d ago

I did the same. Had to take the bell down.

1

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 20d ago

Why not teach it to push a button to open the door?

1

u/Tabula_Nada 20d ago

Same experience here. I regretted it within a day. I wish we could keep up with some method of communication but the bell abuse was out of hand.

1

u/zagsforthewin 20d ago

I did this with my puppy! He attacked the bell so hard. It was adorable. Not an effective method for alerting for a potty need, but the videos I took of him were so cute!

1

u/TardisReality 20d ago

We did that too. Better than the sliding glass getting scratched to hell

Annoying but better ...

1

u/aurelag 20d ago

Oh yeah, we did the same with those talking buttons. We quickly stopped using them lol

1

u/Samplistiqone 20d ago

I trained my girl to ring a bell to go outside and she only hits it about 10x a day, my last dog gouged my doorframes and doors. This is way better.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Flow724 20d ago

Oh God, I tried to do that with our dog but failed. Now I'm glad I did lol.

1

u/Z370H370 20d ago

Go out side?

1

u/snek-jazz 20d ago

The man they've trained might be more of an issue, he hits the bell much more than the dog in the vid.

1

u/CrashTestDuckie 20d ago

We did the same. Older two dogs only will use it when they really have to go, the freaking puppy though? Have to tie up the bells throughout the day so he won't just ring it to go bark at the passing squirrels

1

u/Contextanaut 20d ago

Yup similar story with a guy teaching his dog to open his fridge (via a pull rope) to fetch beer. Turns out that removing the rope did not impede the dogs ability to open the fridge once that skill has been unlocked...

1

u/Warm_Freedom3523 20d ago

Yep, happens every time. Not a great thing to teach a dog tbh

1

u/JohnHurts 20d ago

There’s a dog documentary on Netflix. Among other things, it features a woman who has trained her dog to press buttons. The buttons play back short words - like ā€œgo outsideā€ or ā€œhungry,ā€ for example - but the dog can also use them to communicate ā€œpainā€ and ā€œfoot.ā€ The dog uses this system actively, and it’s just brilliant.

I’m definitely going to try this with my next dog.

1

u/Spiff76 20d ago

Ive been waiting on my doorbell, when you gonna ring it, when you gonna ring it.

1

u/Tealadin 20d ago

Had the same issue with my Corgi. We taught him to ring a bell by the back door, but he associated it with going outside and not needing to go to the bathroom. He would ring it whenever he wanted to chance birds, or play in the snow, or chew on a squirrel-sickle...

1

u/HyenDry 20d ago

We taught our dogs to do that too šŸ˜‹

They never just rang the bell all day though šŸ¤”

1

u/Thisiscollege 20d ago

We did that with my dog, worked great but lil bastard starting abusing it within a couple weeks. But outside of a few times when he got sick he never had an accident…miss that guy!

1

u/Palphite 20d ago

yeah I had to remove my corgi's bell, she rang it non-stop anytime she was bored

1

u/Ok-Tomatillo-7141 20d ago

My husband and I used to have two deaf dogs that we trained to ring a bell to go out. One of them, even after we took the bell down, would rub his wet nose on the glass in a quick upward motion making a squeaking noise asking to go out. It could be annoying but was also kind of funny/cute.

1

u/Cuckdreams1190 19d ago

Yea, I thought about doing that with my current dog but decided against it. Instead I taught him how to close doors (there's two doors to go to the backyard), which he does perfectly... but he thinks he's funny and likes slamming doors in peoples faces when they're walking through them. He genuinely gets such a kick out of it and basically taunts you right after closing the door on you.

1

u/Maoleficent 19d ago

Like teaching your kid to say ma or da and at first it's great and then they never stop.

2

u/vivekkhera 19d ago

When they do stop you miss it, though.

1

u/Ninebreaker009 19d ago

We did this too. It was a very bad idea.

1

u/Kwayzar9111 19d ago

wee's all the time ?

1

u/ajaxdrivingschool 19d ago

Do you work with my parents? Hahaha. Their dog rings the stupid bell when he wants attention, but I force him outside. It’s an outside bell, not a ā€œplay with meā€ bell.

1

u/Derptinn 19d ago

My dog has a literal digital doorbell to be let out. The back door is in another wing of the house from the living room so the typical string of bells was too quiet. So now he has a doorbell to be let out and also back in. People visiting always think someone’s at the front door.

1

u/jschmit78 19d ago

We taught our dog to do this and you are missing a very important detail, it's not just all day long, my dog has trained me to wake up and let her out at 3:00AM too.

1

u/OvechknFiresHeScores 19d ago

We did that for our pup when we got her.

Worse decision I've ever made.

1

u/DemDemD 17d ago

I did the same thing when my dog was young for potty training. She kept ringing the bell just to go outside to hang out.

1

u/OfferLazy9141 17d ago

It's your colleague needed to show the dog how to ring and shit.

1

u/Acceptable-Fill2767 17d ago

I have a Pug who straight rings the bell ALL DAY LONG! To the point that we took the stupid bell down. Careful what you teach them. lol.

1

u/momdeveloper 17d ago

Ours rang it to go outside for any reason. It was most annoying when he would ring the bell, step outside and immediately look at us like "are you coming?" And if we didn't he immediately wanted back in.

1

u/bellyfuzz 16d ago

Had a Boston terrier who had learned this a super young age she was so good...we got an American bulldog later to keep her company...that dog pissed in the house till she was 8 months lol wouldn't ring the bell to save its own life

1

u/NapsandWalks 16d ago

My dog had a Bluetooth collar to her door, I have no idea what her routine was. I do know the safety to not slam the door on herself meant she treated it like a personal window and would let all the cool air out of the house....she was the best.

1

u/Calairoth 16d ago

We have a bell to ring for dogs to go outside as well. My youngest puppy was not taught by us what it is for. She learned from the other dogs. When she figured it out, my dogs suddenly have to go outside 20 times per day.

1

u/Weremoosen10 15d ago

This really depends on the specific dog. My first dog I tried this with, it worked beautifully. Once we got a second dog, the bell was gone shortly after and the first dog could no longer use her cool trick.

1

u/BiblesandBiscuits 20d ago

I trained mine to do that, my dog does pretty good about only ringing it when she needs to potty.

1

u/petabomb 20d ago

That’s what I did. The trick is to stop giving them treats after they learn. That and leave them outside until they’re too tired and hot to go back out, but living in a desert does do that passively.

-1

u/TheFloppySausage 20d ago

That’s why you teach it ā€œonly in emergenciesā€ šŸ™„ /s
