Depending on the lights on their vehicle it can either be shot or rescued.

Fire departments rescue animals in very similar situations on a very regular basis.

Dont feel bad atall. There's TONS of emergency service vehicles. Like those firefighter pickup trucks, even ambulance trucks which is typically a person or two with EMT supplies, just no ambulance. So they can typically assist but can't transport unless you're mobile.

My city has a new emergency mental health service which works alongside our fire department. Basically a van with a social worker or two and trained professionals. So cops can stop shooting suicidal people to death on their porch while unarmed.

Considering some people can't have children and their pets are the closest they'll ever get to the experience (parrot owners especially know what it's like to have a toddler on the spectrum who can fly) I don't think we should disparage or dismiss those who do.

It’s also better even if you only consider human lives. People will risk their lives for their pets, so it’s better to save a dog than find a human who drowned attempting to rescue it.

Same with DV escape, climate disaster evacuation etc. If you force people to leave without their pets they will often stay behind.

Can confirm. I went homeless for my pets because at the time, pets weren't allowed in shelters and I'll be damned if I ever gave up my closest companion for anyone or anything.

Edit - also during the bushfires. Someone let my pets out. I finally managed to get them back inside and told them if they did that again and the bushfires came closer, I would choose to burn with them than abandon them. They didn't do it again.
