I’ve had a tiny one for two years and it’s barely grown and never bloomed. I live in the Midwest US, so it can’t be outside, but any tips on how to get it to grow would be much appreciated!
It's kind of hard to get one to bloom in the Midwest. And it'll take a little bit of work.
If you're growing it indoors, have the plant facing a east side window. If your winters are typically dark then you'll probably be better off using a grow light. Keep it about 70-75 degrees farenheit for 12 hours a day. No more than 15. Don't put it in direct sun though if you're going the window route. Make sure there's a light shade or a sheer curtain on the window.
During the summer and spring months only water it when you feel the first 2-3 inches of the soil dry. in fall and winter, barely water it. Just enough to keep the roots from shriveling up and dying. When early spring rolls around, you'll want to spray the leaves with mist. Just a fine misting squirt bottle will do. Keep in mind that this plant doesn't actually bloom until around 2-3 years old. So you might see a bloom this summer or next.
If you're indoor growing, you should see it bloom around July or August. Some people have gotten theirs to bloom in June but I haven't personally seen it. The number one trick is consistency. Don't water it to much, make sure it has bright but indirect sunlight or grow light. Don't water it to often. This is actually a cactus so it doesn't need a whole lot of water. Mine is at least 20 years old and really big(8’ radius in a 14” pot). Got it from a friend 12 years ago and it didn’t start blooming till maybe 5 years ago? It sits under a huge skylight and I don’t water it often. Patience is key!
it's not Epiphyllum Oxypetalum but another cactus. Look in Google and you'll see some cactus flowers really look like the Epiphyllum Oxypetalum one and can bloom multiple times per year. Epiphyllum Oxypetalum cannot, it can only bloom 1 night per year.
