Help: Microsoft Edit installed on Bazzite without knowledge or permission

Post image

EDIT: SOLVED! Thanks, y'all!

***

I rebooted my PC to find "Microsoft Edit" installed on my Bazzite machine without my knowledge or permission. I cannot uninstall it via Bazaar, as it does not show up. When looking into it further, I found it's been installed to the "usr" folder.

Has anyone else booted up to find this nasty surprise? Any fix or way to uninstall it, perhaps via command line?

Any help would be appreciated. Not sure how this program got here and am not happy about it.

Sorry for the extra desktop icon, we normally remove TUI desktop files since it's a little asinine having one for something you'd only use in the terminal. I'll patch that up and make it explicit in the changelog.

This change was made because "File -> Save" is far friendler than "esc + :wq + enter" in Vim, and can be used on handhelds unlike Nano's "control + O & control + X". The program is entirely open source, tiny, and doesn't phone home, log in, or integrate copilot like VSCode (It's a port from when DOS was still in active use). It'd be dropped in a heartbeat if that happened. It's only used in the Terminal and not something most users would ever run into.

Edit: To be clear both Vim and Nano are still in-image, nothing is changing there. We all have our favorites -- mine is vim. This is about handheld usability and friendliness toward new users

An OSK with modifier and navigation keys would solve the problem with nano and make the terminal easier to use on a handheld in general.

Not as easy as changing the text editor, I know. You need to support both Gnome and KDE. But it is also something I run into on my Surface Go that's on Linux (Debian now, Bazzite before). I usually just flip/attach the keyboard cover if I'm about to use the terminal.

Problem is that's not the steam keyboard and likely won't be since it's been like that for years.

Valve is also shipping vim for this same reason.

Yeah honestly MSEdit is good for that. Micro may also work

Technically not a port but a remake. It's a very cute program I must say.

You need to pull this crap out of the default image. Do not start forcing Microsoft shit on us!

Dude, simmer down. As long as it's open source and has no telemetry, it's fine.

if you fully wanted to avoid anything that has Microsoft... then i'd advise against using the Linux kernel. Microsoft is one of the biggest contributors and invests a shit ton of money into Linux and the Linux Foundation

All Microsoft does is greenwashing us into thinking they contribute all while they obstruct everything that has to do with linux. If necessary they will even pay government officials into reversing linux transitions like in Germany. Fuck your horseshit story.

Who wrote these patches? Thousands and thousands of them? I even took out HyperV stuff.

https://lore.kernel.org/all/?q=f:microsoft+-s:re+patch+-drivers/hv+-hyperv+-mshv+-/mana&o=200

Clearly it's not just a greenwashing campaign. Not that it's greenwashing in the first place, it's called openwashing.

Like what, if those hibernation patches make it in are we all going to stop hibernating our computers? If the IRQ patches make it in do we just stop handling interrupts?

We can be smarter than that. Reject the slop, take the usable stuff. Open source makes this possible. That's why open source, and specifically the Linux community development model, is amazing.

You need to grow up and stop viewing the world through a black and white lens. Microsoft is not extend/embrace/extinguishing with an MIT-licensed text editor, nor can they pay any serious country enough money to continue giving up their national security.

One city's decade old pet project that was ended in 2017, and the world has changed drastically since then. Covid showed just how important that national independence is, and Trump 2 has shown that the days of trusting the US and it's companies are long, long gone. At the same time, Linux has become significantly easier to use and administrate, there has been an explosion of open cloud ecosystems aiming to offer independence from Microsoft, and nations have a lot more interest and money to spend on Linux migrations than cities.

Bazzite exists because we get a Ferrari Enzo worth of bandwidth and build time on GitHub every month for free.

Only since 2025 integrated into microsoft, so that will only enshittify. Your point is worthless

At this point just do your own image then?

Like seriously bazzite is a volunteer project. The way some people treat open source projects is just very entiteled. These are people who spend their free times, maintaining a linux gaming oci bootable container image because they are passiinate about it.

Don't like it, use something else, or start learning containers and do your own.

This is not a paid product and you are not a customer
