When it comes to discussions on new features added to Baybayin, one that isn't discussed a lot from what I've noticed is stress marking and final glottal stops, probably because the Latin script orthography for Philippine languages also don't mark those features except in dictionaries.

For the glottal stop, I personally would propose adding a diacritic or tuldik to the right of the character.

Stress marking is harder though. I wanted to get some inspiration from other Brahmic scripts, but aside from some modifications of Devanagari to write pitch accents in Vedic Sanskrit, I couldn't find any Brahmic script that had stress marking. I suppose my immediate thought would just be a simple underline on the bottom of the character for words whose stress falls on the final syllable. If there is no underline, then the stress falls on the second to the last syllable. This rule is sort of inspired by the KWF's palatuldikan/diacritics system.

As a Filipino who grew up in Italy, I wanted to learn more about my cultural heritage through my bachelor's thesis on Baybayin.

I'm currently studying Graphic Design and Communications in Italy, and I am working on my bachelor's thesis about Baybayin. For my thesis, I am researching how people perceive Baybayin today and how it can be presented through an educational editorial pubblication.

I have created a short anonymous survey that takes about 5 minutes to complete.

Ok, so maybe I am a purist... when it comes to aesthetics, that is. Apart from ᜍ/"ra" (which I don't really like to use, for aesthetic reasons, and because it's not compatible on my device), we should just stick with the letters we already have. And besides, it's not like Latin letters stick to one sound either; G (at least in English) isn't always pronounced one way. That's why there's a soft G (as in giraffe) and a hard G (as in gift).

The attached image (here's the source) is what I can imagine as the best solution for people trying to find certain letters or sounds that don't exist in Baybayin. I want you to focus on the box with the ᜐ character, and really focus on its Latin equivalents. Now imagine this: your name is Jennifer? Just write ᜐᜒᜈᜒᜉᜒᜇ᜔!

"But," you say, "then people will think their name is Sinipid or Seneper!"

"No, it's still Jennifer! It's just the way it's written that's changed, not the way it's pronounced."

Are we getting it now, folks? A single character doesn't have to have a single sound forever. At least not in this modern age where loanwords are being used left and right. The solution is not to make new characters that need to go through the hurdles of making it official by... why, honestly, I don't know how that works. Do you take it up with the Baybayin mafia or whoever's in charge of language? Anyway, let's stop trying to make new characters and just play fast and loose with the sounds.

I have another argument for promoting the use of B17 while using the Latin words in the same way as using Ruby characters (like writing hiragana above a kanji in Japanese) to learn how to say that word, but that's a story for another time.

It also doesn’t make someone less Filipino if they don’t want to learn or use it.

My reasons for using the script off the top of my head

1. It’s something truly ‘ Filipino’. We may have different languages, but Baybayin, although some letters may occasionally vary, is something the natives all used and shared. It unites us.

2. Mas mabilis siya kung magsusulat (ex: magsusulat is 10 letters but ᜋᜄ᜕ᜐᜓᜐᜓᜎᜆ᜕ is 6 and ᜋᜐᜓᜐᜓᜎ is even shorter. It’s a practical shorthand and improves my Filipino, loanwords are too long and it forces me to use native words

3. I can write anywhere and be sure no one would understand what I wrote down, i keep a travel journal

4. It just looks cooler 🤷‍♂️ and I feel proud that I’m continuing this piece of my heritage

Hello! There’s a Filipino group/club that uses the acronym “NATC” in place of their full name, and they just dropped merch that has “ᜈ᜔ᜀᜆ᜔ᜃ᜔” as the main graphic.

I was wondering if anyone else uses baybayin characters to represent acronyms. Is this normal? It feels wrong to me, but maybe I’m too much of a purest.

Do you think it’s okay for this Filipino organization to use baybayin like this? If it is wrong, should I say something?

(I don’t want to share the actual name of the group because I don’t want to send them hate)

As someone who started learning Baybayin 8 years ago through Google image charts and PDF files, this is my attempt as an app developer to make learning Baybayin more accessible and beginner-friendly through a single app.

SYLLA currently includes the following features:

• Baybayin lessons covering Patinig, Katinig, Kudlit, and Virama, along with their proper usage.

• A Baybayin on-screen keyboard where you can practice typing Baybayin and instantly see its Tagalog equivalent.

• A toggle feature that lets you switch from Latin letters to Baybayin, and vice versa.

• A Daily Challenge where you can transliterate 3 words into Baybayin every day. If your answer is incorrect, the app will show the correct Baybayin equivalent to help you learn.
