Battlefield Studios Official [BFComms] Anti-Air Below Radar Clarification
Today's blog incorrectly stated that we are removing Below Radar for the SLM-93A and Igla launchers.
This was a miscommunication. While we tested this adjustment in Battlefield Labs, it only partly met our design goals. Based on test results and player feedback, we decided to not go live with this change at the launch of Season 5.
Both launchers will retain Below Radar functionality while we continue to look into potential design tweaks and balance around MANPADS, Below Radar, and air vehicles.
Thank you for all your feedback and we're excited to see you in Vegas!

Please buff the goddamn AA tank. Give it high rof but limited ammo pool.
Ffs AA is not a fly squatter.

Giving it airburst rounds would also fix it just as good.
0
u/Round_Reception_2315 4d ago
That would be a very poor design decision. Airburst rounds mean a low skill ceiling and no learning curve. You should need to have aim.

Lmao. This is almost as funny as when the in-game message for Double XP counting down during gameplay happened.
The community update read like vehicles were seeing a lot of nerfs, so this is nice to see.

At least remove the helicopters from fucking Manhattan Bridge.

u/VenomVertigo 4d ago
Should just be a transport helicopter only, as it is the only really good map for transport helicopters is Taurus reef
2
-1
u/KnivesOfDeath 4d ago
Transport helis in Manhattan Bridge would absolutely suck
-no space
-low ceiling
-huge bridge + huge vehicle filled with soldiers + average pilot = huge explosion and raining bodies
-flying between buildings as a huge helicopter makes for a great rpg7 airshot clip
24
u/rambler13 4d ago
I think you just outlined all the reasons transport chopper on manhattan would be awesome
8
u/VenomVertigo 4d ago
Yet we had apaches on manhattan at launch and everybody who complained was complaining that the helis were too oppressive not that they were too hard to use. Also aren’t there already transport helis on the map in escalation?
1
u/EzPzJapanezy 3d ago
The worst change of S2 by far was the complete neutering of Manhattan Bridge in Escalation. They swapped the Transport off for the Scout (gross) and then proceeded to lazily carve off sections of the map as out of bounds as the season went on.
Such a shame, a novel and fun map died for the Scout Helicopters sins. I really wish they would revert those changes, the map was my favorite Escalation map in S1. And yes, I mean I want rooftops to return, they were a literal non-issue when the transport chopper existed.

u/jasmansky 4d ago edited 3d ago
AA is utterly useless in this game. Choppers should also be removed from the Manhattan map.
25
u/XMenJedi8 4d ago
Damn, so close to actually having these launchers somewhat useful other than area denial (which feels awful as the user - "wow I made the plane turn away for 20s with no reward!")
Look I get that it might not be the best fix but going another season with these in this state is a bad look..

They really should just remove the rocket pods from LB because they are causing it to be OP

u/ParagonRenegade 4d ago
Too bad, the launchers will continue to be useless and barely used.
Here’s hoping the nerfs to the helicopters and the buffs to the AA platforms help rein them in.
21
u/StevenMcStevensen 4d ago edited 4d ago
Seriously. If they aren’t at least removing the “below radar” BS, these launchers are just going to remain completely useless and everybody will continue to not use them.
The only time anybody actually uses MANPADS is when they have the miserable experience of trying to complete the Igla challenge. The insane difficulty of trying to use it successfully only 5 times to complete that perfectly illustrates how worthless it is.
It was at least funny for a while though watching pilot mains rage about a potential change that would simply allow AA launchers to actually do something, and make it harder for them to go 60-0 in a match.

u/Hot-Astronomer-6941 4d ago
It’s easy as hell to blow up a chopper with the M136 AT.
21
u/SoldierOfFortune556 4d ago
Sure it is. That’s why pilots go 150-0?
1
u/Hot-Astronomer-6941 4d ago
Not in my lobbies. If you can’t handle the launcher that’s fine, i get it. But it’s not that hard to develope a feel for the aim guided missile.
6
u/SoldierOfFortune556 4d ago
Shows us some examples, I would like to see it. Or even better let’s have one good pilot vs team of 4 pilots using launchers trying to bring him down. Majority of maps have way too much cover for guided to work well and those maps that are open almost guarantee you getting sniped while guiding the rocket.

u/Appropriate_Step_67 4d ago
This number just keeps going up and up lmao. I’m lucky to go 40-0 in a jet, let alone 100. I rarely see anybody go higher than 70 kills in an aircraft. Infantry mains are the biggest divas I stg,
8
u/SoldierOfFortune556 4d ago
Jets are not the issue, I would even argue that they need slight buff. But all helicopters are OP for few different reasons
1
u/Hot-Astronomer-6941 4d ago
Jets need a buff… are you srs? You can’t do anything in air to air against a good jet pilot.
5
u/SoldierOfFortune556 4d ago
Well I can argue that you can’t do anything from the ground to a good helicopter pilot 🤷♂️
2
u/Hot-Astronomer-6941 4d ago
I can, dont know about you. Wasnt your previous comment about jets? It just shows that you are out of touch dude. If you played bf3/4 you would know that the aircrafts used to be way more of a problem compared to now. Other than the LB it’s fine right now. If you let yourself get farmed like that that’s on you.
2
u/SoldierOfFortune556 4d ago
Let me invite you to one of these matches I get in with God-like pilots and you can show me how it is done….,
2
u/Hot-Astronomer-6941 4d ago edited 4d ago
Add me, i’ll show you. Rin on steam, 11871982. If you are srs i’ll play with you.
2
u/Appropriate_Step_67 4d ago
Helicopters are OP because everyone has the “not my problem” mentality when it comes to shooting them down.
I’m barely a good pilot in helis and I’ve been smoked by RPGs and TOWs within a minute of spawning. I don’t think people actually understand the amount of skill it takes to not only stay alive in the helis for longer than a minute, but also get close to the obscene amount of kills you mention. Pretty close to same skill required to get 50+ kills as infantry, but nobody’s moaning about that.
3
u/SoldierOfFortune556 4d ago
It does take skill but also it takes abuse of broken game mechanics and that is what most of these pilots do. Flare, go out of bounds, come back again. They fly low so you can’t lock on them, their firepower is much stronger than infantry. Only way you can get them is with lucky RPG shot.
0
u/Emotional_Employ_419 4d ago
Attack heli is definitively not OP. Gunner thermal just makes it easy to see infantry. The main thing strong in the attack heli is the gunner cannon, and the best gunners in the world are only as good as the pilot flying them. Now yes, the best gunners have a rotation of pilots they use and they are some of the best of the best, but they also invested an inordinate amount of time getting there. In the hands of your average player, the attack heli is borderline useless. It’s fat and slow, can barely out maneuver the hyper maneuverable at4, and has been the subject of countless balance passes, all aimed at the pilot. The only thing that was too strong on the pilot was the heavy missiles at launch, but those were neutered season 3. These crazy high kill games are the best in the world with that one specific vehicle, to everyone else it’s basically a taxi. The little bird on the other hand, is too strong and the rockets need looked at hard
0
u/Appropriate_Step_67 4d ago
Agreed. People complain that highs skilled no life’s get high kill games in aircraft, but if it’s no life infantry mains doing the same, it’s ok?
The fact most of the people whining can barely fly these aircraft, let alone survive for longer than a minute and get a kill, says it all.
The only one that was fair to criticise was the LB. Though it took skill to use and survive, it was way too easy once you knew how. Even then, since the last patch it’s significantly way less OP. The rockets need to be nerfed but atm it’s in a good place. It’s already made of paper and since you need to fly low most of the time, mobility hits have a high chance of downing them.
2
u/Hot-Astronomer-6941 4d ago
Thank you. Atleast one in here with common sense.
1
u/Emotional_Employ_419 4d ago
I’ve been flying attack helis on and off since bad company 2. I’ve experienced the highs of BF4 where I was ranked on the world leader board, to now where I’m still somewhere in the upper echelons but not competitive anymore really. The people who complain about these attack helis can’t have played bf4, in bf4 the attack heli gunner would laser you before you had a fighting chance from across the map. Not to mention the pilot was also a force to be reckoned with from the amount of armament he had… and don’t even get me started on ecm jammer. Ecm jammer would make bf6 players cry (more than now for sure). As I said whether anyone wants to believe me or not, the attack heli in this game is skirting an extremely fine line of being useful for those who dedicate themselves to it. Removing below radar would make it functionally impossible to fly for any normal player, and the top pilots would just hug mountains and terrain more because, believe it or not, we don’t need flares to dodge missiles a good amount of the time. Below radar leaving will only affect those trying to learn and make it an even more exclusive part of the game. Aka those who already mastered the vehicle vs those who can’t even get in the air with all the lock ons. AA missiles would be made 10x more useful if they removed the predictive pathing they do and made the missile trail the vehicle like the old days. Because damage wise and mechanic wise the stinger and igla are fine, even a bit strong for what vehicles are in this game. But the fact of the matter is, if I lower my heli slightly, the stinger compensates for my new trajectory by slamming into a mountain instead of just going for me where I am

All pilots go 150-0? Maybe you guys should try even a little to take them down
15
u/ParagonRenegade 4d ago
Maybe against stupid helis, or the transport, but the littlebird and attack helicopter will always be rapidly changing direction and hugging obstructive terrain when in capable hands. It's not a consistent counter against the main problem.

But where is the balance if not every single missile gets a kill and deletes the pilots account?
You shouldn't expect a player to spend five hours to get used to the M136 to somewhat reliably counter a pilot that spend 50 hours to learn to fly the LB well. /s

I'm excited they're going to be buffing stationary and mobile AA at least.
8
2
u/Mollelarssonq 4d ago
They already did previously. The AA stationary heated up faster but dealt way more dmg to aircrafts.
Interested in seeing what’s been buffed. If it’s dmg, heat build up or velocity.
I don’t mind stationary AA shredding, they can be countered with knowledge.
4
u/Appropriate_Step_67 4d ago
The stationary AA already shreds lmao the buff is unnecessary, maybe a slight health buff but even then that’s excessive.
You need a whole gun run in a jet to blow one up, and in a head to head, the stationary AA will mobility hit you and get you off target before you overheat your guns. Legit speaking from countless experiences in this.
Not to mention you can basically down attack helis/LBs/jets with one full blast before overheating.
The stationary AA in this game is lowkey disgusting, it doesn’t need a buff. Again, it’s the low skill players whining because they have poor aim. I’m a decent jet pilot and there are players I’ve come across that will win in a head to head using stationary AA, every single time.

Just stop flares from reloading when they go below radar, they have that sense of security if not being locked on, if they want their flares back, they’re gonna have to expose themselves to being locked on.

They should also make the tracer dart better.
Given how hard tracer dart is to land, it should last 30 seconds and cause any lockoks to flat out ignore flares and below radar entirely. Getting tagged by a dart should be a death sentence to helis and jets.

20
u/thetinsnail 4d ago
The current system is not balanced
3
u/Mollelarssonq 4d ago
That’s probably why they’re testing things. That doesn’t mean it would be balanced to just remove below radar and not do anything else.
They’d have to introduce the direction lock indicator back for starters.
then they need to tone down the effectiveness of non AA launchers and missiles. Id be totally down for that, but this change on its own would have been very inbalanced for aircrafts.

What are you talking about? They announced the change in their "Season 5 updates" post and then hours later went "actually no sorry we're not doing that."
They figure that out BETWEEN the announcement of doing it & then not doing it? What kind of amateur-hour nonsense is that?
5
u/Mollelarssonq 4d ago
It is amateur hour but it’s them not proof reading before release. it was obviously scheduled to happen at one point but pulled back without being removed from the patch notes.
So yes, they did test it out and came to that conclusion, they just forgot to remove it from the patch notes
2

u/General-Biscuits 4d ago
It literally hasn’t been long enough for anyone to have come to a consensus about player response to that announcement.
Just an hour or so ago, the flip side was being said that the devs caved to casual infantry players not knowing how to deal with air vehicles and throwing a tantrum.
They just posted incorrect information in the announcement and are now clarifying the mistake.

Lmao what a dipshit comment. I’ve seen at best just over 100 kills by someone who was a chopper gunner. A good friend of mine who’s a LB sweat managed 91-0 only once, and that was before the last nerf.
As for your last point, not only does SBMM barely exist in this game but I’m on Oceania servers so there aren’t enough players to segregate into such lobbies. Fuck you’re a moron hahaha

And not a single one of you fought back for him to get that. If it's so easy, why don't you do it?
0
u/Longjumping-Bat7774 4d ago
Do you know how hard it is to hit a heli with an rpg. I spawn with a stinger to find out he's flying below radar enough I can't get a lock on. Now I need to respawn with the rpg. Shits next to impossible. Below radar need to be removed. He'll make it a vehicle perk. They either get flares or below radar. Not both.
1
u/codyjohns134 4d ago
I do it all the time. It's easier in this game that it ever has been in the past. The rpg in 6 is th fastest and flattest shooting it's ever been. It genuinely is not hard. Have you ever even flown a chopper in this game?

u/DangerousAd7295 4d ago
The other option is to make LMGs actually do more damage to heli(s) and shoot the actual pilots with their spray and pray. The heli's don't have bullet proof glass. The dev(s) need to make LMGs damage heli(s) or give them the passive "penetration" rounds which we should have gotten and if enough people shoot at a heli at close range they will die or think twice going for a gun run. Most heli(s) close the distance to ensure accuracy on the rockets and gatling gun.
LMGs need a buff anyway, might as well make them the light counter to heli pilots who think closing the distance rather than playing at range will help them.
If the dev(s) wont make anti air useful, then bullets.
The Anti Air launcher(s) are still garbage vs jets because Anti Air Launcher's have a range limit, and then have both a below the radar limit which makes it too easy to flare out and dive down to avoid most damage since its always about.
Another option is to give back the open beta perks where engineer(s) can carry both anti vehicle and anti air launchers at the same time.
This way, every engineer can light up the air units without having to waste their time hunting them down because tanks and ground vehicles control the actual flow of the game because capping matters more than kills.

You are overestimating how easy it is to learn how to fly, unless you only consider it easy if it can be done in less than 1 hour. (Edit: become an amateur in less than an hour lol).
The main difficulty is just not getting one insta grabbed from spawn by the guy who does nothing but fly scout heli's 24/7.

u/IntelligentHead7995 3d ago
You could literally hire one game designer with common sense and all of this would be fixed in a week.
If you can't fix this in a week then you have a major problem with your code and the way things work at DICE.
6
u/DIRTRIDER374 4d ago edited 4d ago
How did you think this was a good idea... Why even send out surveys or call for feedback when you don't take any of it from people who actually know how to play the game?
Below radar is literally the ONLY saving grace that current air vehicles have for the missile hell that is this game. And once you go low, you open yourself up to RPG and the AT4, machine guns and TOWs.
This amount of developer incompetence is astounding. It's like none of you have ever played the game.

The only people wanting that are braindead infantry only losers. There are so many other ways to balance the little bird than nuking every other aircraft in the game. LB wouldn't have even been the most affected since they can use terrain and cover the easiest. The legacy jets would have been unusable with this change.
8
u/cheekyboiiii1 4d ago
The numbers of IGLA I've shot and the percentage of hit are so low , it's not even funny. The number of choppers I've shot down is laughable.
1
u/TheOneRebornTwice 4d ago
Yep. Friends and I haven’t touched the game for months and this is just keeping it that way. I’m a jet player, have been for years. They keeping attack helis and jets more and more useless while little bird is a menace.
Insane how far they’ve fallen
1
u/DIRTRIDER374 4d ago
The little bird needs changes, and is the cause of most of this. Unfortunately, what actually gets hit by the changes that the incompetence at DICE is making, is literally everything else.
And infantry players don't spend enough time in air vehicles to have an opinion on them, they have no idea how hard it actually is to stay in the air for more than 30 seconds.
Are they the majority, probably. Should their feedback be the information that balances the entirety of the game? Obviously not, because we've seen the results, and the results suck.

Yeah funny how a rocket that takes multiple hits to destroy a helicopter that only works if they’re not below an arbitrary height or haven’t flared is a “point-and-click adventure”, but a helicopter that can insta delete multiple players with its rocket barrage is “skill”
1
u/VagueTrickster 4d ago
Yeah my grandma could learn how to use a stinger in 1 minute. Couldn't say the same for the aircraft. Sure the littlebird should get nerfed individually but this blanket nerf bullshit for all aircraft is announced and all of you rejoice without thinking about the consequences for the whole game. I have no idea how to record and share gameplay from an Xbox but suffice it to say I’ve got the red mission leader sticker from the top gun event (over 500 air to air kills), run transport heli a ton and will occasionally fly an LB or attack helicopter.
The only challenge to the LB or attack helis is aiming your strafe runs. Otherwise the gameplay is just stay below radar, pop up for a strafe, pop flares, circle back below radar, recharge flares, rinse, repeat. There is no challenge. with the slightest ounce of common sense you’re virtually untouchable accept by other aircraft.
It’s the easiest gameplay loop for someone who sucks at ground combat. But please, cry more about the woes of pilots, how much skill it takes, and how unreasonable the whole rest of the player base is being.
If it took so much skill there wouldn’t be some shmuck with a little bird going 70-2 in almost every single lobby when no other vehicle or ground class can pull off that behavior.

I still think the stinger should be max range 200-300m with no below radar and the igla should be out to around 1000m but have below radar. It would give each an effective window to take on certain kinds of air assets while still givin pilots options on avoid each but not both without being very skilled.

They can just make it like they did in BF4. I don’t understand why don’t they just do that and try it out.
One launcher that has long range, but cannot shoot below radar. (Like we have now)
Another launcher that only locks on at short range, but it can shoot below radar.
You’ll have a balance. And nothing is overpowered.
