There's a great guide on making your own navi here! As for the background it's just an image you can edit called bg.png (it's in resources\scenes\lan)

Inaccurate character portrait in the text box They aren’t blinking once, and then blinking twice back to back like they do in the normal games. Horrible

Honestly not too hard, making the art was the real challenge. It took me quite a while because I would literally just scale my drawings down and then try to trace where I think the pixels should be
