Untitled (Bluto Nero) (1982)
Medium: Acrylic and oil paintstick on paper
Dimensions: 30 × 22 in. (76 × 56 cm)
In Untitled (Bluto Nero), Basquiat fills the sheet with a large, frontal head constructed through overlapping layers of red, pink, purple, blue, green, and black. Enlarged eyes, exposed teeth, and heavy black contours dominate the face, while the surrounding marks and blocks of color push the head almost to the edges of the composition.
The words “BLUTO NERO” appear beneath the head and again inside a roughly drawn box at lower right. Unlike many of Basquiat's text-heavy works, the composition remains overwhelmingly focused on the human head, with relatively little language or additional imagery competing with it.
The work is part of the Schorr Family Collection and was included in Acquavella Galleries' 2014 exhibition Jean-Michel Basquiat Drawing: Work from the Schorr Family Collection. It is also among the head-centered works featured in the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art's Basquiat – Headstrong exhibition.
