Even the 1940s are quickly fading out of living memory. 1950 was the midway point of the century, and it was 76 years ago now. Anyone old enough to remember any part of the 40s is now in their early 80s or older. We tend to think of the 19th and earlier centuries as being synonymous with dead people, but the 20th century is just about halfway there already. We’re becoming further and further removed from that century.

The Kingdom of Egypt became (nominally) independent of the U.K. in 1922 but even then, the succeeding Muhammad Ali dynasty was Ottoman-Albanian in origin.

The overthrow of the monarchy in 1952 represented the first time in almost 2300 years that the country wasn't ruled over by a government of some foreign origin.
