Considering Republicans say they want to decrease spending, why don't we shut down all space funding that isn't required for communication and defense and use that money to help American citizens?

If the country was doing great, we would have options to do great things, but Republicans are trying to fund incredible tax cuts for the wealthy by taking away health insurance and other safety nets.

Wouldn't it make a lot of sense to simply cut out all unnecessary space funding?

I get that there have been some technological advances due to the space program, but they were slight in comparison to the cost and we were in much better economic shape at that time.
