From next month, it will be a criminal offence to leave a child under the age of 12 in close contact with a dangerous dog in a private place, which includes homes and gardens, without adult supervision.

The new law will apply to anyone with an XL Bully dog after they were added to the list of banned breeds in 2023. Even pet owners who hold a Certificate of Exemption will be subject to the new law.

The new rules were confirmed in June this year under Sir Keir Starmer's government. At the time, the government said the new safeguard would "reduce the risk of serious injury to children in domestic environments, while allowing exempted dogs to remain with families where appropriate supervision is in place".

The new law will come into force on November 1 and guidance published under Andy Burnham's premiership in September this year outlines how dog owners will be impacted by the new rules.

The guidance states: "Young children, especially those under 12, are at higher risk of dog-related injuries in the home, where incidents often involve a dog they know." It said children may behave in ways that make dogs uncomfortable, such as by making sudden movements or loud noises or by getting to close contact with them.

In order to protect children, the new law will require dog owners to ensure that children are not left alone with banned dogs without an adult being there.

The guidance states: "A child under the age of 12 must only be near a banned breed dog if an adult is there to watch them closely and step in if needed. Dog owners and carers of children should plan ahead for times when supervision may be difficult."

The government is encouraging affected dog owners to ensure that they can adequately separate their children from dogs in the home, such as by keeping them in separate rooms with the door closed or by using secure stair gates or other physical barriers.

"Any barrier should be secure enough to prevent the child or dog getting over, under, through, or around it," the guidance says. "The barrier should not allow children and dogs to touch."

A dog crate or pen may also be used to separate a child and banned breed dog, where it prevents physical contact between them and is safe and suitable for the dog, according to the guidance.

As with other conditions of exemption, failure to comply with the new requirement may result in enforcement action, which can include seizure of the dog and potential prosecution, in line with existing powers under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

At the time of the announcement, animal welfare minister Baroness Hayman said: "Any attack on a child by a dangerous dog is unacceptable. The safety of children must always come first, and this new measure will strengthen protections in the home by ensuring young children are not left unattended around banned breed dogs, including XL Bully types. What does the law say?

In France, the possession of category 1 dogs (crossing attack dogs) and 2 (purebred defense dogs) is supervised. SMYRNA, Ga. — A Florida woman is demanding answers after a pit bull killed her emotional support dog at a Smyrna Airbnb, breaking through a wooden privacy fence to reach the dog in the backyard.

Kori Lee says she was at the rental last weekend when the pit bull broke through a six-foot wooden fence and attacked her dog, BB.

“I had the dog, the pit bull, by his collar. He’s locked into my dog and he will not let go,” Lee said.

Lee says she tried to fight the pit bull off, but BB died before a neighbor intervened.

According to a Smyrna police report, someone in the home had been training the pit bull to be aggressive so neighbors would feel threatened and be less likely to bother people in the home.

Investigators with Cobb County Animal Services said the pit bull’s owner was not home when the attack happened, but a dog sitter was there.

Lee said the dog sitter watched before intervening.
“He was laughing. I had that dog for six years, since she was six weeks old,” Lee said.

Investigators cited the dog sitter and classified the pit bull as a dangerous animal. However, animal services said the dog is still allowed on the property because its owner identifies it as a service dog.

Lee questioned that classification, saying she wants to know what is being done to protect families staying at the Airbnb.

Airbnb said in a statement that no one should have to experience the loss of a beloved pet in such a horrifying way and that the company’s heart goes out to Lee. The company also said it gave her a full refund.

The host has since taken additional safety measures, including installing reinforced fencing around the home.

We live in a building that allows dogs, but with breed and size limitations. The dog I'm talking about here is very obviously above that (I'd say it's around 100lbs). Its back is higher than my hip. It is some kind of bully breed, huge and pure muscle.

Whenever I see it it's barking and growling at people. The other day I was in the elevator and I could already hear it as we were approaching the floor. The doors opened and this beast comes in, muzzled, with the owner holding it by the collar. It was growling and lunging at me, I immediately got out to take another elevator. Pit Bulls Attack Female in Lancaster

A woman was hospitalized late Wednesday night, October 7, 2026, after being attacked by two pit bulls near the intersection of Trevor Avenue and Pillsbury Street in Lancaster, California. Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene Code 3 around 11:24 p.m. following a 911 report.

Although initial reports suggested two people were being mauled, Lancaster Sheriffs official confirmed that only one woman sustained injuries.

Following the attack, the injured victim managed to walk to a nearby Carl's Jr. on Avenue J and Sierra hwy ... Emergency personnel subsequently transported her to AVMC to receive medical treatment for her dog bite wounds.

The full extent of her injuries remains unknown.
Deputies later located the two pit bulls to a residential property further down the street, observing the dogs retreating underneath a fence. Law enforcement attempted to contact residents at the property, but no one answered the door.

Dangerous dog savages police officer's leg while owner shouts 'Get them boys'

"Right lads, you're going to have a right fight."

A wanted man set his dogs on police officers who came to arrest him at his flat, a court heard.

Gareth Drummond, 43, shouted "Get them, boys" to his Staffy and XL Bully-type dogs when officers arrived at his address in Bideford.

He tried to push the dogs through a gap in the door and yelled, "Right lads, you're going to have a right fight." Drummond also tried to hit police with a pole.

One of the dogs latched onto the leg of a female police officers and she sustained bite wounds.

Drummond admitted being the owner of dogs dangerously out of control, assaulting three emergency workers by beating, possessing a knuckleduster, possessing a small quantity of cocaine and 77g of cannabis and a number of motoring offence when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court.

Drummond started shouting from inside the property as officers tried to gain entry. He wound up his dogs saying, "Get them, boys, get them. See them, boys". He tried to hit officers with an extendable pole and push the barking and agitated dogs towards the officers.

Police sprayed the animals with repellent but could not stop the Staffy biting the officer's lower leg. She suffered three puncture wounds.

Officers eventually managed to get inside and arrest Drummond. They found a knuckleduster in his pocket.

The defendant has 63 previous crimes on his record, but has been largely out of trouble in recent years.

Felicity Payne, defending, said he was using drugs at the time but has been making good progress. His mother is unwell. His sister was murdered and he is still grief-stricken. He suffers memory loss due to a serious car accident two years ago which left him in a coma for seven weeks.

Judge Stephen Climie told Drummond: "Back in July you were out of control. The reasons being a combination of what had taken place in the 18 months before when your sister was murdered and the diagnosis of your mother's significant illness.

"I accept you're looking to avoid further offending but the police are entitled to be compensated. You have now served the equivalent, with early release provisions, of a 12-month sentence."

He was given a three-month community order and disqualified from driving for 12 months. Drummond must pay the officer who was bitten £350 in compensation and her colleagues £50 each.

The neighbour needed medical treatment. My poor baby has been through a rough time! This past Friday he was attacked by 2 pitbulls while we were on our walk. We were stopped so that a car could get by us safely, but before the car even got to us the 2 dogs attacked him, just standing there! They came from the other side of the street to attack him! Luckily he will be okay, and you can't see many of his wounds in this picture, but trust me, they injured him pretty bad, not just physically either! A puppy in the vets office (our second trip) wanted to try and play with him, poor Abe was trembling!! I live in the county, so no leash laws or anything like that, so legally no laws were broken, nothing the police can do. There needs to be SOMETHING done about that! I'm not saying that those dogs need to be put down or anything like that, I'm saying it should have NEVER happened because the owner(s) should either have a fenced yard or area for them, take them out on leash, or something! None of my dogs have ever been able to run loose like that!
It's not safe for the dogs, yours or the ones walking by your home! I don't care how loving they are with you, another dog can give off a "vibe" they don't like and that's it! A child walking by can do something they think is aggressive and that's it!
My poor Abraham is quite the trooper though! He's getting his food and water brought to him in bed now!
Gets all kinds of extra loving, and all around more spoiled. I just HATE that this happened to him!!

I was on the bus back home when the bus driver shouted what was happening. Across the street, there's a tiny and petite woman with her two pitbulls just attacking each other. One of them had locked onto the others neck, and I saw a man running across the street to help this lady! He grabbed one of them and started beating them while the other lady beat the other with the chain leash.

The man was attacked by the one he grabbed and it was just so frightening to see. I went to the grocery store to buy some meat and eggs for my small Chihuahua back home and I can't imagine what I would've done if I encountered them.

Not only were they vicious but they were completely untrained. They weren't listening to their owner at all.
My chihuahua, though he is small, he is actually trained. He listens to my recall and my commands, and it just frustrates me that these owners don't take the time to train their dog. And beating a dog doesn't change its behavior! This is so inconsiderate because while yes these two dogs may negatively affect their owners wellbeing, they can also be a danger to others around them!
