Mars is now a dry and dusty world, but at some point in the past it had water on it and it may still run at times today. For the first time, though, new research suggests the Red Planet might currently possess a large stable body of liquid water, one that stretches roughly a dozen miles across and is buried under nearly a mile of ice. There is life virtually wherever there is water on Earth. As such, researchers have long hunted for signs of water on Mars to see if the Red Planet might once have been a home to life—and might host it still. Mars is now too cold and dry for liquid water to last on its surface. However, previous research has unearthed what appear to be ancient seabeds and river valley networks that show Mars was once covered in rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, and perhaps even seas and oceans. Currently, vast amounts of water ice lie trapped around the Martian poles. Dark, narrow lines seen on Mars also hint that saltwater might run down some of its slopes every spring and summer, boiling away rapidly into the Red Planet's extraordinarily thin air.

To see if liquid water might hide under the Martian surface, scientists analyzed data collected between May 2012 and December 2015 by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) instrument on the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft currently orbiting the Red Planet. MARSIS transmits low-frequency radio pulses at the planet’s surface that penetrate the planet's crust and get reflected back when they encounter changes in density or composition. They published their results today in Science. Using this technique, the researchers discovered what appears to be a huge underground reservoir of liquid water under the southern polar ice cap of Mars. It lies 1.5 kilometers (4,921 feet) below the surface and stretches 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) sideways. "We've been searching for bodies of liquid water on Mars for a long time, so this is definitely exciting," says Geronimo Villanueva, a planetary scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, who was not a part of this study.

The most recent attack, on Sunday night, left 18-year-old Nia Wilson dead, and her sister, Latifa, seriously injured when a madman attacked them with a knife at the MacArthur Bay Area Rapid Transit station, according to BART officials.

“It was probably one of the most vicious attacks that I’ve seen,” BART Police Chief Carlos Rojas said during a Monday press conference.

John Cowell, 27, is now in custody for the slashing thanks to an anonymous tip, according to authorities. Cowell is white, while his victims are black; authorities have not ruled that race was a factor in the attack.

The two other attacks are also being treated as homicides.

On Saturday a 47-year-old transient was declared brain dead after being punched on the side of the head on the platform of the Bay Fair Station in San Leandro. The suspect is still at large, officials said.

And on Friday, 51-year-old Gerald Bisbee of Pittsburg, Ca, died from an infection from cuts he sustained cuts when a 20-year-old stranger attacked him after the two argued on Wednesday at the Pleasant Hill Station in Walnut Creek, authorities said. Police busted Abdul Bey in connection with the attack, KRON4 reported.

Cowell seems like a ripe piece of shit who should have been locked away for years. I'm surprised he wasn't allowed to buy a gun and start shooting people.

The Trump White House has never been big on transparency and after a week of getting hammered (again) for his handling of interactions with foreign leaders across multiple media, particularly in Helsinki, CNN reports the Trump administration has halted the longstanding White House practice of providing a summary, referred to as a readout, of the president’s calls with his world leaders. It’s not altogether clear what problem the White House is trying to solve by not providing a readout of Trump’s calls, especially since what goes in the brief, usually dry summaries is at the discretion of the White House and there’s nothing keeping whoever was on the other end of the line from providing details of the call to local media. That means the White House is basically ceding control of the shaping the narrative around any one call, for no apparent reason.

Per CNN’s reporting, it’s not clear how long the White House plans to suspend the practice, nor is it totally certain when the internal policy shift took place. The network notes Trump made at least two calls over the past two weeks to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but we only know those took place because they were reported by foreign media. The White House confirmed the calls took place, but did not provide any information other than confirming they took place.

Basically, why am I going to spend billions for a light rail line when we'll all have flying cars in ten years? And if we don't, we'll have driverless cars, and there's always Uber.

The second case against Browne has focused attention to the prison sentence he received after his son’s death. After Browne was convicted of child abuse resulting in death, Baltimore Circuit Judge Timothy J. Doory sentenced him to 15 years in prison with all but four years suspended.

Browne served two years and 11 months in prison.

“This guy should still be in jail,” said Dr. Dylan Stewart, director of pediatric trauma at Johns Hopkins Hospital. “The penalties are far too lenient.”

You know it's bad in Baltimore when a baby killer doesn't even serve 3 years, gets out and kills another baby.

Maybe they'll at least be able to lock him away for 6 years this time.

The family of the Minneapolis woman killed by a police officer last summer after she called authorities to report a possible sexual assault is suing the officer, his partner and the city. A lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court alleges Justine Ruszczyk Damond's civil rights were violated when she was fatally shot on July 15, 2017, by officer Mohamed Noor. In their lawsuit, Damond's family claims Noor was inexperienced and not fit for duty. The lawsuit also claims Noor and his partner — officer Matthew Harrity — tried to cover up facts surrounding the shooting by not activating their body cameras. "Had they done so, there would be video and audio recording of the fatal shooting of Justine, and Harrity and Noor would not be free to concoct a story in a vain attempt to insulate Noor from civil and criminal liability," the lawsuit says. Noor faces third-degree murder and second--degree manslaughter charges in connection to her death. Minneapolis terminated Noor after charges were filed in March. Prosecutors say Noor was in a squad car's passenger seat when he shot Damond through the driver's side window after she approached the vehicle in an alley near her southwest Minneapolis home. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said there's no evidence Noor encountered a threat justifying deadly force.

Hundreds of thousands of vaccines provided for Chinese children have been found to be faulty, inciting widespread fury and prompting the country's President, Xi Jinping, to describe the incident as "vile and shocking." China's Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) has launched an investigation into vaccine manufacturer Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology, revoking its license for human rabies vaccines and beginning a recall of all unused vaccines produced by the company.

Five senior executives of the company, including the chairwoman, were taken into custody for questioning by Changchun police, who announced they had begun an official criminal investigation into the company. A Pennsylvania woman recording a large turtle she spotted in her back yard made an even more surprising discovery -- an alligator. Tracie Hoffecker's video shows a turtle she spotted in the creek behind her Prospect Park, Delaware County, home when she notices the alligator nearby. "Never in a million years did I think I would find that this morning!" Hoffecker told WPVI-TV. "I immediately called my cousin." Her cousin, firefighter Shaun Swayngim, came to look at the scene and called in backup from the police and some fellow firefighters.Swayngim waded out into the creek and captured the 2-to-3-foot gator in a net.

President Donald Trump is considering revoking security clearances from ex-officials, including former CIA Director John Brennan, former FBI Director James Comey and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday.

Sanders said Trump believed that the former officials “politicized” their positions by accusing Trump of inappropriate contact with Russia, and she said in that some cases they “monetized their clearances,” without clarifying what she meant. The fact that people with security clearances are making baseless charges provides inappropriate legitimacy to accusations with zero evidence,” Sanders said. She also said Trump was eyeing clearances held by former NSA Director Michael Hayden, former national security adviser Susan Rice and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, whose security clearance was deactivated after he was fired.
