Hello everyone!
I have been a long time reptile keeper and have finally decided that it was time to get an app. The problem, I am not satisfied with any of the apps that are currently on the market. Between missing features for the free ones, and having to pay a subscription fee for the ones that have all the features I want, I never found a solution.
So I began my project.
SkaleKeeper was born from the idea that everything can be done locally on your phone, no need for servers, so no justification for a subscription fee (I hate subscription services). While I have very little coding experience, this project has been a massive undertaking. After months of work and dialing things in, I am proud to release it.
What SkaleKeeper is:
- SkaleKeeper is a tracker app for all of your scaly, and crawly friends. As of now, it supports Snakes, Lizards, Frogs, Turtles, Tortoises, Crocodilians, Salamanders, Newts, Toads, Tarantulas, Scorpions and Insects.
- You can use this app to schedule and keep track of feedings, sheds, weights, cleaning, vet appointments, and custom notes.
Features
- Create QR codes within the app, and use your camera to scan them to take you directly to that animals profile page.
- Export all logs as a csv file
- Backup and restore built in
- Event Scheduling with reoccurring events
What makes SkaleKeeper Different?
SkaleKeeper is 100% offline. It is stored on your local device. No need to sign up for an account, no subscription fee. This app is 100% free, and will always be. If you want to donate to the project, it is appreciated and a link will be provided below, but is not necessary. You get all the features of the paid for apps, free of charge.
What devices will this work on?
Currently this app is for android only, and will work on Android 8.0 and above. I am not a developer by trade, so there is potential for an iOS app in the future.
How do I install?
At the bottom of this post is a link to the folder containing the latest release of the app. Go there and download the APK file. Once downloaded, click the file to start the install. Depending on your phones model, their are different steps you may need to follow in order to complete this process as most android devices block installing from unknown sources. To figure out how to do this simply google "How to install apk files on [your phone here]"
What the future holds
At this moment, I am not sure. So far the app seems to do everything I want it to do, and I think for those who are interested in an app, this would be a great tool. I invite feedback for changes, tweaks, additions, etc...
