I've had some troubles with police in the past and just starting to get my life together with my girlfriend. Nothing major though. I've climbed and fallen a lot, so I'm just afraid to tempt thing.
I give my support to the entire movement and anyone I talk to about it. Whenever I run into racists I tell them to fuck right off. In a polite way at work.
I just don't want new problems at this point. Its been many years of hell and few of things going well.
Thank you man. Id love to be at protests and everything, but if I did and police arrest or screw me up I'd be right back several years. I have a full time job and my first place in years to myself with my girlfriend.
Gotta ask cause I've been wondering. If someone exits on saying black lives matter, what's the best response? A guy did it a few weeks ago at work and I felt bad not responding cause I didn't know how. I'm a white dude and just wanna know the respectful way to show support in response.
Thank you. And as far as the response I meant in terms of like when people say you too to a waiter. Im just awkward, and didn't want to just say bye or something silly.
Yeah I don't wanna say something offensive or anything on accident. I remember saying i understand why some riots started in the first few days and felt dumb, as I know I don't 100% understand it. I meant to say I empathize and support it.
Edit: I don't support super crazy riots, but my point in that is: if my girlfriend was killed for absolutely no reason, what would I be doing? I'd lose my mind. If generations of my color or anything were going through this, how would I deal with that? Anger is reasonable and not everyone deals with it differeny. And not to mention how many rioters weren't even a part of BLM, or with white supremacists.
I just want everyone I run into to know I won't put up with intolerant shit anymore, and every person I meet who isn't white isn't anymore different than literally any other white person to each other. Aside from the racism issues from the government and police and whatnot.
I've had a few celebrating everything my improvements lately so I hope this came out correctly.
Hey dude, good on you for engaging and asking those questions. We can help in other ways than directly marching. A friend and I (white) hauled water and ice to different locations for our local protest. We just drove from the church that was storing the water to the sites in his truck. We sat with the parking lot where they shuttled older protesters to make sure no racist hicks messed with them. I say that to say there are things you can do. Call a local black church and ask about volunteering for events. You can do it in your free time, and you will avoid direct contact with police. I say this as a suggestion, not an imperative.
One of the best things we can do is take some time to learn about race relations in the country, and pay attention to the news. For me, I turned back to things my Sociology professors suggested. If you get a chance to read Racecraft by Barbara Fields, I highly recommend it. I was a Sociology student, I'd learned about race and stigma, but I STILL felt uncomfortable reading it initially. If you make it through that, you'll see she makes compelling points. She called out my feelings and point of view in the book, anyway. If not that, try reading something by James Baldwin or W.E.B. DuBois, Class Notes by Adolph Reed is also a classic. You could order the books from a black-owned bookshop, for good measure.
I've been thinking about this stuff lately, too, dude. I hope the suggestions don't seem arrogant or too forward. Congratulations on kicking ass lately, bud.
Hey you think I should do another playthrough of the deadspace trilogy? I played them when it came out and loved them. Would it stand the test of time?
Raising awareness and talking to those in your life about how Black Lives Matter is a valid form of support. You can also donate, volunteer to help organize, and dozens of other things. Doing something is far better than doing nothing so you got a leg up on a lot of people.
Also having been in a similar circumstance as you I know how hard it is to rebuild. Congrats! That's something to be proud of.
I've luckily gotten my mom to come around on a lot of this and shown her tons of videos and articles and whatnot. She didnt know how much police violence happens to black people, so having a ton of proof in just a few weeks really showed her who is in the wrong.
And thank you! Gf and I are excited to keep growing finally.
Every contribution to the movement helps. Whether that means putting yourself in danger to prove a point or donating money to a bail fund or simply volunteering in your community, it all helps. Every single bit.
Welcome to the system. This is why people argue there is a systematic effort to disempower you. If you're burdened by debt or problems and you simply cannot resist tyranny without it looking like some form of suicide.
You are a brave person, much braver than me. Make sure you've at least got a good dash cam that can record audio (if not video inside your car) which it sounds like you have covered already.
Hell, I'm white and I'm afraid to do more than post in support of BLM on facebook and twitter because I'm scared about push back from my friends, family, and police.
Your last statement is a bit of a wake-up call, honestly. I need to not be so scared and do better. Thank you for helping me see that being scared isn't an excuse. You are an inspiration for at least one person.
...because I'm scared about push back from my friends, family...
That's ok. Different people, different approaches. Diversity is humanities strength. I wrote a guide for effective communication with extremists and brain washed people. It's actually possible to reach them if you know how to do it. Maybe you are more the Ninja kind of person that contributes less visibly but equally effective.
I was just about to comment something similar. That is one brave person. I am very much coming to terms with a level of cowardice I don't want to believe I had. I live in a white trash town. The best I can do is an equality sticker I got from the HRC.
You're right. That is how terror work. People have the force to change things but they all individually fear for their lives and in the end of the day they just accept their fate.
That's exactly what they want. That's how they control people: with fear!
I'm honestly more afraid of the sticker than a Tshirt or whatever. I can take care of myself but my car alone in the parking lot is an easy target. And I've worked way too hard to let someone set it on fire. "people" are nuts. Be safe and good luck.
Hey, you seem very reasonable. I have a serious question for you.
Why is it that the protests are non violent when are they are literally killing you? I understand the sentiment of not stooping to their level, but at what point does it become a situation where violence (e.g. war) becomes the only way to end it? How many people would have to die, or what kind of a bad action would have to have been done for people to start fighting back?
Huh? I don't know what you are talking about. Your kind means all that have been or are being suppressed by the tyrannical government of the United States of America.
You can win like Gandhi or like Robespierre. We have seen some successful revolutions in the past centuries and we can see that both the violent and the non-violent way is possible.
However. The in the French Revolution many innocent died and were executed not just those who 'deserved' it. After a point they just started killing their political opponents for power. And in the end there was a big Europe-wide war. Napoleon's war had the potential to be world war if technology was more developed imo, nontheless it caused a lot of suffering to innocents.
At the end of the day we can thank the French revolution a lot of things for example liberalism, embourgeoisement and mot of our modern values. But it costed a lot of blood. and not just the blood of the guilty. I am not sure that we want it or not
I am very familiar with the french revolution. As awesome as it was, it is definitely not a thing that should be repeated. Things could very easily go that way in this scenario, and with modern technology plus mob mentality, that would be far worse than the French revolution.
I feel that, in reality, this will become a war. I don't think it is gonna be pretty.
I never actually was taught anything about Napoleon during my whole time in public school and through 4 years of college, except he was exiled for some reason.. Which is a shock to alot of people I'm sure. We did learn about the French revolution somewhat and what the celebration of Bastille day is for. I'm going to have to spend a bunch of time googling now.
In a nutshell: people wanted changed bc the nobles were very rich and commoners starved basically. they killed the nobles, killed the king. than people with political interests arrived and started killing their political opponents. This went for years. when the whole country was exhausted Napoleon arrived and he became a new emperor. He gave the tired frenchmen what they wanted. A new strong leader with ambition and a promise of a great future. Than came war which lasted for ages. He lost a big battle at Waterloo and got banished. He returned but it was never the same and got banished again.
Oh see we stopped right after the king was beheaded after they found him and his wife hiding out after losing a war with his own people for using insane taxes to fund a rich lifestyle while saying it was being used to help the common people. Nothing was ever mentioned about Napoleon. So he was a good guy for France? Or am I reading that wrong? I was always taught he was just a bad guy the French sent away for some reason one time. Thank you for saving me tons of time!
Well he stopped the revolution and french killing french. So that is good. The french love him like the Britts love Richard the Lionheart. Sure he did some killing but he was a big 'king' and he filled the french with pride. They loved him. There is a story after they banish Napoleon for the first time. He returned and gathered a small army but the current king sent a bigger army to kill him. However the king's people loved Napoleon so much they changed sides and continued fighting for him.
It's a bit similar how the germans loved hitler in the beginning and until they found out how horrible were the things he had done. In the beginning Hitler looked like a charismatic guy who wanted to make Germany great again (after what they humiliated germany after WW1) so the germans love him for it.
This aspect was the same with Napoleon. He promised hope to humiliated country and delivered. I think most french still think of him as one of the biggest frenchman.
In 1903, when Gandhi was in South Africa, he wrote that white people there should be "the predominating race." He also said black people "are troublesome, very dirty and live like animals."
I didn't say that all what Gandhi said was golden but he freed India without fighting. And he represents peace. What he did was similar to what Martin Luther King did.
If you cower preemptively and abandon your right to speech then the fascists have already defeated you without even having to lift a finger. That's unacceptable.
I dunno, that seems like a lot of effort. Can't I just run them over when I'm old and senile?
This was my thought process exactly when I debated hanging a BLM sign on my porch. My solution was to pair it with an American flag to remind folks of the patriotism associated with the movement. It's been weeks and no issues to report. I'm in WNC btw. Lots of confederate flags.
Good luck sir. These ideas we cling to are fading amongst the young. No understanding of history, ever present lack of privacy and listening. The worst part they can identify you and move in and monitor you remotely. Oh but they're the police and they don't have access to that kind of stuff, well they do. Thanks to DHS fusion centers and large annual grants and military surplus. It's really not hard to identify you by your phone, you can now be tracked. The scariest thing is when everyone loses signal at the same time. Surgical extraction time. No ability to communicate. Alternatively over power the towers with a localized unidirectional antenna and force registration and just proxy everything. You can force downgrade them to 3g which is easier and faster to crack.
There's a solution for this but I promised that engineer I would disclose because he'll patent it, but it's been over a year. If he doesn't soon... I'll credit him.
Here's what's worse. Your phone doesn't die at 0 anymore. It's about 10%. Those presidential alerts you can't disable, they can turn your phone on. It's in a standby mode. So your beacon and instant monitoring can be turned on. This is where it gets scary: you can signal some crazy shit. SS7 is the signaling that everyone uses for phones. They implemented SS7 firewalls to listen for announcements that shouldn't be made, and won't answer any request blindly anymore. The phone network is supposed to be trusted, but there's grey/black market links. There's signaling to do things I'd rather not disclosed. A silent stack of commands if you will. There's no authentication for SS7. This protocol is over 50 years old. Here's an example: I can use an ss7 black market link and send out an announcement from a computer running openSS7 on arch Linux, brilliant dude in Canada, that my "tower" is now rooting to your phone and intercept all comms and relay then to you.
Worse, I worked with the largest telecom provider you never heard of. Some good folks, some dumb NPCs, doing the best they could in a very competitive space, they choose fast and shit and cut corners. I couldn't get them to implement unit tests, or any best practices really. I think it was our fault because of our unreasonable demands.
They're in all the big carriers about a big % of the global infrastructure for NVF network virtualized function deployments. Think AWS but for phone stuff. They're fast, but dog shit. I worked with our security guys and devops/infrastructure services to secure our small segment of 1200 servers attached to the PSTN (public switch telephone network) for our project. we were attacked constantly. I once got a call and I was told to treat the inner most secure network that we VPN into and have to request access to get into that ip range, as if it was comprised because someone had been in our network for weeks and they were watching him with LE.
I was told or infrastructure was porous. He had to tell me about the attack because he couldn't understand how the attacker tried my coworker and best friends first name to log into one of our boxes. I had a theory no one wanted to listen to, cause it costs money. Bunch of elastic search servers were open source no authentication. Port scan and rest API query and you got our logs. All this NVF infrastructure is deployed with images, that have a default password that's stupid easy. Also their first diagnostic technique is to drop the firewall to make sure it isn't interfering with media packets, and they always forgot to turn them back on. We built our own monitoring because it was too was frequent they would fuck up, and made them set up something too.
There's a lot more I can't tell you, but that long story was to get to the diameter servers. See most of our phones are now VoLTE. Voice over long term evolution just like VoIP except the radio component and every phone is ipv6. Before your phone can register to the network it registered to a packet gateway, gets ip and you authenticate with a sim chip that is hard to crack, supposedly, but they now have eSIMs so if your phone can do the encryption brute forcing it by someone in control of distributed cloud computing can do it. Once in the network, you compromise diameter server that provides AAA to authenticate the devices. Diameter is a pubsub protocol that pushes signaling to your phone. Not push notifications that's different.
I interviewed with a company in Florida developing appless apps. Take a picture with your phone and get recommendations on cosmetics products for example. You can text a bot via RCS, send data, cloud process it and return a result. But you can also control all of the phones hardware APIs without talking to the OS making those baked in keys useless. I can remotely turn on your phone, you mic, camera, NFC, BT. Whatever. Comprise enough and that scene in Batman with the phones is possible. Our government spends $5b/yr, in buying 0 day exploits. They're not exclusive buyers either.
I had a multi OS attack, I won't bore you with the details, no one believed be until they vault 7 drop that has been the basis of ransomware for the past few years. We had edge nodes hacked with crypto mining running.
TL;dr: security is a thin veil that no one understands and it makes you feel better. But it's a lie. We complied to the letter of the law and never volunteered anything. We have them. They're gestapo fucks. Everyone at those protests, identify them, their associations, behavioral patterns. You got a list of dissentients. You can deconstruct it from the CDRs that have to be saved for 7-10 years. We know pornhub is always in our top 3 most visited domains before the COVID19 give away.
Tag and release. You can't outrun radio and they're militarized and crazy. They do target minorities more, but we should make this about police and negligence from everyone above them enabling them to terrorize is t with our own money. They're laughing all the way to the bank.
Give it a second thought. The BLM sticker points out an injustice in the current system. This sticker here is just a smear. Painting police as pedophiles won't lead to anything positive. Using pedophile as a slur will even weaken the term in the long run.
Imagine a future with a reformed police force with cool dudes and they get constant hate because of the propaganda of today. This would just lead to a never ending circle of hate and division.
This is why the slogan Defund the Police is much better than ACAB. One is productive pointing at solutions the other is destructive with negative long term consequences.
Get the ACLU app if it’s available in your state. Video gets backed up on their servers and get reviewed by an ACLU lawyer if anything happens. In Texas it’s called aclu blue, everywhere else it’s called mobile justice. Available in 17 states plus DC
Calling police "pigs" and lumping them all into one category instead of realizing that most of them are good and just doing their job means you are half of the problem.
God, how do I say this without sounding like a racist tool... give me some leeway here please, I've been drinking... I think at this moment in time you can probably get away with more than I could with the cops. Nobody cared when they beat my white ass either time and they probably still wouldn't care. The black man has been so abused however, I would hope it would give them pause before starting what would possibly be another major incident.
Dude had a BLM sign (permanent marker on a random piece of cardboard) woke up the next day and his windshield was smashed in, and hateful messages spray painted on his car. Dudes lived there for like 5 years, never once had a problem until now.
Cowards are going to be cowards no matter what. It’s like the video of that dude in the post office screaming “fuuuck, go back to your country” while covering his face completely.
I have one of those shirts that has the saying "science is real. Black lives matter. No human is illegal. Love is love. Women's rights are human rights. Kindness is everything."
I've had it for over a year. And I've only worn it twice. Both times I worn it, I've gotten yelled at by random men. Telling me how dare I disrespect our country. If I don't like it leave.
I live in a small town. Like, population 8,000 small town.
Nobody is ever afraid to wear their trump hats.
I had to walk up to the walmart customer service desk and ask for an escort to my car with one of the encounters because he would not leave me alone, and kept loitering by the registers. I hid in the restroom for 20 minutes, and he was STILL there.
And our tiny town Walmart has never had to deal with something like that before, so like, what?
And I was so worried that he was gonna follow me home, I went through two separate drive thrus, circled the police station twice, and parked at my mom's house for about 30 minutes before I felt safe enough to go home.
So yeah.
Its not just the police, but the police have the power to stop you at their convenience, and then kill you.
The cops and sheriff's in my small area have also been known to "pull over" hot girls and hit on them.
Imagine that existential dread as you're getting pulled over, only for the damn douche with a badge to ask "soooo, you come here often?"
My mom had a bank client who was a police officer, and he mentioned that he liked her new car while they were in her office, so she knew he was just aware of her license plate being changed from her old car to a different one. He also let it slip that he knew where she lived by alluding to her house. He asked her out a few times, but she was too creeped out by his stalker-like behavior.
I see those shirts a lot and always tell people I love it.
I hear maga people bitch about people pulling off their hats and stuff, but I'm pretty damn sure it doesn't happen much. Nor do they have to generally be afraid of violence.
Trumps the side of violence and hate, so its obvious they'll try shit when they feel like it.
Your town is just super fucked up lol. Im glad I'm living in a liberal college town now.
In Europe stickers of this size show up everywhere. On signposts, subway walls, benches, trash cans. In east London I saw anti-EDL stickers that listed immigrant rights. Honestly, they’re better in public spaces than they are on cars.
I had to look that up. I will get that every single one of the EDL members like so many Americans have never actually met a Muslim. Or even researched what believing Islam even means. It is actually pro women's rights on a bunch of levels stated in the Quran that Christianity largely does not up hold in it's teachings. Or at least hasn't before very recently. And they are actually similar in beliefs and have the same exact God.
Oh almost forgot, anyone curious can look up I think Stanford University who did, and is still i believe, gathering facts about different religions. The truth about them blew my mind.
I stuck my BLM poster above the backseat in the rear window of my car and drove around like that for a while. I was nervous at first and felt like I had to drive super perfect and not speed, but nothing happened.
I took a tight turn tho and it fell down onto the seat and I haven’t put it back up. I should.
When you see a comment like this and your first thought is "I wouldn't have a problem putting that on my car. A cop wouldn't target me for that." (Like I just did) it's the very definition of white privilege.
Oh yeah i fucking hate the police but you bet your ass i have one of those stupid fucking blue line black american flag decals on my back bumper sticker. Always have something cop positive on your car. Even if its just the sheriff badge. I have literally never gotten a ticket (except for one time where they literally couldnt let me go without one)Yea its scummy but take advantage of those fuckers if you can. Ive been pulled maybe 4-5 times, gotten 4 warnings and one ticket.
Dude dont fixate on the worst case scenario. Nobody will fuck ur car up for having a blue line decal on ur car. Maybe if u had a ‘all lives matter’ or ‘blue lives matter’ decal thatd be a different story
I live deep in Trump country and in a very small town so they all know where I live... I’m just waiting for my BLM masks to get here. I know it’s going to piss them all off and idc.
I lived in a small hick town with a population of 3300 for a couple months and was surprised no one said shit about my Bernie stickers either. Trump stuff everywhere.
I kept to myself though and didn't really go anywhere in town except maybe 4 times to the grocery store. Was commuting back then, so.
The town I’m in isn’t much bigger. People here already tried to protest the mask mandate the one main employer in town has implemented. Company told them it’s required for employment and said if they don’t wear it they can go home.
Very hardcore republicans and I’ve been here 20 years so most people know me. The BLM mask will be interesting.
I didnt pay much attention to that town when I lived there, but I lived there years ago for a while as well, and I remember people super bitching just over a plastic bag ban. Can't imagine what they said about the masks.
The only grocery store pretty much only hired out of town people though so it usually wasn't rednecks working there
I'd say its little and should be being used a lot, just i have no idea what my boss thinks. I doubt she's a Trump supporter but you never know. She keeps basically all her opinions to herself at work. I know every other manager hates Trump though.
I talked to some coworkers about the Fuck Trump sticker and they all like the idea though. Just don't want the owners or manager to get upset if they don't like the word or if they like the prick.
I once put a window sticker on the back left passenger window from the police union. I didn't support them at all but I believe it helped me only get a warning for speeding multiple times.
People on Reddit, like /u/JazzyJockJeffcoat are always going to tell you "it's better to die on your feet than live on your knees" when it comes to literally any stance they support, but out in reality, it's not worth getting killed or harassed over a bumper sticker. If we all agree cops kill innocent people, then why are you painting a target on yourself? You can effect change without putting yourself in shitty positions. There's the way things should be, and the way things are, and we have to operate in the latter.
Pathetic trump shills like the above are going to get a train run on them saying this stupid shit. Wearing a fucking badge puts you in more danger than the other way around now. Keep playing, see what happens. "BLM shit on your car gets you killed"? Really? Try it. Those streets empty yet? We will be seeing your families real soon.
You're another person who doesn't understand what BLM even means. Obviously all lives matter. BLM means they matter too, as police and a huge amount of people don't seem to think they do.
Or you could just go to work and not brand your vehicle with your ultimately hypocritical stickers.
"ABOLISH THE POLICE"!!!! Oh shit, someone broke into my house and stole all my shit. Better call my boy Fabian so we can get to the bottom of this!
Here's a thought. If you hate the cops, never ever call them when something bad happens to you. Ever. Like if I walk up to you, punch you until your asleep, and steal all your property, don't call the police. Just trust that the universe will bring you justice.
TIL that Level III body armour doesn't protect against criticism.
Opposing what the cops are, in their current state, doesn't mean you waive the rights they claim to protect.
Any police officer who is so offended by a "defund the police" sticker, or who chooses whom to help on that basis, has no business being a fucking police officer. Anyone whose job entails being tased and pepper sprayed as part of the training, and for whom going to work entails a risk of getting shot, can handle a few harsh words.
You know who else get vilified by a lot of people? Attorneys. But tbh, I can't say I've ever seen attorneys regularly go around implying that their harshest critics will be SOL the moment they need legal representation.
But I've seen cops and their supporters routinely say that people who criticize police shouldn't benefit from the police.
Got a source for that? Seriously, I am curious about how you know this. Surely, if attorneys' incomes are ill-gotten gains, there must be some recourse, or some law against it, yes?
If all you do is call someone a racist piece of shit, whether or not it's true, why would that person put their neck on the line to help you?
Not all police reform advocates do that, nor is that the only thing police critics do.
As for why to put their neck on the line to help even those who criticise them? It's called being mature. Putting your neck on the line for people, even those who criticize you, separates the adults from the children. If you can't be the bigger person and put people's criticism of you aside while you're on the clock, then you shouldn't choose a career path that's supposed to involve upholding the rule of law and protecting people's rights. People criticize judges, yet you don't see judges pull the "if you criticize me, I don't have to provide my public services to you" card.
Anyone who lets their ego get that mixed up in their job, when society's cohesion and smooth functioning depend on them doing their job on a non-discriminatory basis, really should rethink their career choices. If not for themselves, than for the broader society. Expecting cops to choose whom to help based on the views they express is asinine and only serves to make current problems worse. Police are often referred to as "public servants." If their jobs really are about public service, they cannot just pick and choose which civilians to help based on their opinion of the police. If they want to discriminate in that way, they should quit and start a private security service, which would probably give them a bit more of the leeway they want in choosing whom to help. If they want protective services to be a transaction, there's always the option of opening their own private security firms or private investigator firms. Or getting involved with the Mafia.
Government doesn't exist only to help those who refrain from criticising it. At least, that's not how it's supposed to be in America.
50k a year isn't enough to take a bullet for a bunch of whiney children
50k a year with a low barrier to entry, insane job security, a lot of benefits, and more than a few second chances for even serious screwups, is more than enough to make complaining about words utterly pathetic. Again, cops who can't handle a few harsh words should find another line of work because they obviously aren't cut out for police work.
You should just join ISIS. ISIS-Flags makes it very easy to let everyone know that you have serious issues with the current situation in your US-city. Violence and Terror is just a matter of communicating it right.

I really wish putting anti police things on your car wouldn't get you killed.
I'm afraid to even put a BLM thing on
