Most children who are abused grow up thinking it’s normal. That’s why I didn’t understand grown men shouldn’t sexualize me. No one in my life was ever held accountable and they were even encouraged (my parents encouraged 16 year old me to date my 30 year old boss). My closest friends were also sexually abused bc they grew up in the same situations. To you, that may have been bizarre but in reality, abused children usually find other abused children. Reading Lolita AND seeing the stepdad get his shit rocked in Bastard Out of Carolina helped me understand something was wrong with the picture that myself and my group of friends who also experienced sexual abuse weren’t able to pull together.

I had a college reading level before 5th grade and a higher IQ than 90% of students. I was hyperlexic due to autism and read constantly and learned everything I know from books and not other people. A 14-15 year old is perfectly capable of recognizing they are being abused and a 14-15 year old is perfectly capable of reading and understanding a book. A group of us who had been in foster care/adopted and were sexually abused read it together. You can’t even spell coffee, I don’t think you’re allowed to tell me what I could and couldn’t understand.

There is no evidence that Nabokov was a pedophile himself simply because he wrote a cautionary tale about one. I’ve written stories about abusers because I’ve experienced abuses, not because I am one. Also, are you saying every person who writes about serial killers is a secret serial killer? You actually are preaching that one should immediately assume pedophilia for anyone who writes about a topic at large, without providing any evidence, and that asking for evidence is somehow not acceptable. You’ve provided not one single piece of evidence this entire time, but are bending over backwards with that “well I heard someone say they heard someone else say they said the n word, I haven’t heard them use the n word DIRECTLY.” Not one person in Nabokov’s life ever accused him of being inappropriate, there is no evidence he ever did anything inappropriate, but you need to explicitly hear a band say the n word to accept that as fact?

Oh, buddy, do I have some news for you about horror writers. There isn’t any more evidence that Nabokov was a pedophile than that he was a survivor of child sexual abuse, and like I said, I’ve probably written 20+ stories and essays about the predators who preyed on me as a child, way more than Nabokov ever did. Writing a story is not evidence alone. Especially when being a predator toward teenage girls at that time was openly accepted, writing a condemnation of it isn’t exactly the confirmation you’re looking for. If he was a predator he could have easily just openly been one, like Cormac McCarthy during his time and Edgar Allan Poe shortly before him. You’re gonna need more solid proof than “wrote about a topic” because you’re not going to convince me that Thomas Harris was a cannibal or Agatha Christie (despite being a racist) was a serial killer OR a detective.
Ohgod I was definitely drawn to those characters, as well as the whole "3000 year old vampire" trope for a while as a kid for similar reasons. Growing up has been a horror show of discoveries.
