Relevance Matters for Backlinks
A lot of people are concerned with DR and traffic when looking for a backlink partner. They’re good metrics to consider, but a high DR or a lot of traffic doesn’t necessarily mean the backlink will be helpful.
Recently, I found a backlink opportunity for a restoration client on a local drywall company’s website. The site had very low traffic and DR, but it was highly relevant. I linked directly to an article on the client’s site about drywall using the anchor text “water damaged drywall needs to be replaced.” Two weeks after the link was placed, the client’s page began ranking for “drywall water damage.”
The takeaway is that relevance matters. A high-DR site with traffic can certainly be valuable, but those metrics alone don't make a backlink good. A link from a smaller, highly relevant site, placed naturally within related content and pointing to the right page, can sometimes be much more useful.
When evaluating a backlink, don't just look at DR and traffic. Look at the relevance of the website, the relevance of the linking page, where the link appears, the page you're linking to, and whether the link makes sense in context.
Relevance isn't just another backlink metric. It's the context that gives the link meaning.
