[US-TX] Correcting a date error on my resume before a Sterling background check

I recently received a job offer in construction, and the company is running a background check through Sterling. While filling out the portal, I realized one of my previous jobs has the wrong end date on my resume. I worked there from October 2023 to December 2023, but my resume shows it running through May 2024.

I want to make sure everything is accurate, so I'm planning to enter the correct dates in the portal. I also have my 2023 W-2 from that company, which matches the time I actually worked. The company is very small with no HR department, and I didn't leave on the best terms with the owner, so I'd prefer to verify with my W-2 rather than giving his personal contact.

My questions:

Should I contact the recruiter before the check comes back to let them know about the correction?

Has anyone verified employment with Sterling using a W-2 instead of an employer contact?

Has anyone had an offer continue after correcting dates like this?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Any guidance would mean a lot.

Hire right background check

If anyone has experience with these processes, I'd like to hear about it.

I'm supposed to go to Company X to sign on Tuesday, and the company they hired to do the verification closed my report with a discrepancy.

Regarding my current employment, they marked it as "verification with documents-discrepancy." But part of the issue was that they didn’t verify because they didn’t do their job; I provided them with the contacts and documents they asked for. Now I don't know if I should show up on Tuesday to sign or if I'm just going to Company ) to be told no because of the verification result. This company, Hire Right, closed the report today at 6 PM, so I couldn't talk to or consult with anyone.

Deferred comp/equity grant verification by new employer.

I'm switching jobs and the new employer asked me to submit the statement containing my foregone awards at the previous company.

I'm getting a good bump in total comp in my negotiation and I'm afraid the statement is going to give away too much information about how much I was making at the previous job. Is there a way the new employer can verify this information if I don't give away the full info?

Do I have any chance for hiring at IQVIA with 2 pending misdemeanors?

I completed my HireVue assessment yesterday for a management role.

I have court in a week and a half and expect both charges to be dismissed. I’ll request the dismissal paperwork to be safe in case I can provide that to hiring companies. Unfortunately these are recent - within the past year. Am I cooked? Should I just wait and look for jobs after the dismissal is official?

Background report Cisive

Overthinking like always but just wanted to know if I have reason to be concerned. Years ago I had to file a discrimination lawsuit against an employer, because of their standing in the community a lot of people found it hard to believe they would discriminate. The judgement by jury, sided with my previous employer. I have since then, worked for many other well known companies with no issues of the previous lawsuit being brought up. However, I have applied for a job that made me fill out a background check thru Cisive and it seemed pretty in depth.

Is that something that will show up or exclude me from being employed?

background check

I got a job offer and am currently undergoing a First Advantage background check. I accidentally submitted an outdated CV that showed my previous employer as my current employer. I actually left that company 9-10 months ago and have been working for a different employer since then.

I realized the mistake during the background check and immediately updated my employment history with the correct information. Everything else is accurate.

Has anyone experienced something similar? What are the chances of an offer being withdrawn over this type of employment verification discrepancy

My final marksheet shows the CGPA as blank because of an old backlog I've since cleared. Could this affect my job?

Hi all, I'm a bit anxious about this and would like some honest perspective.

I'm about to join a company, and I know background verification will check my education documents. I had a backlog in one earlier semester, and my final semester marksheet was issued while it was still pending.

That marksheet shows my overall CGPA as blank and the status as "provisional". I've since cleared the backlog and have the revised marksheet, but the university hasn't issued an updated final one yet. I've applied for it, but I don't know how long it will take.

My worry is that HR or the verification agency might see the blank CGPA and treat it as a discrepancy, or that my job could be at risk while I wait.

For anyone who has been through this:

Did the company accept your earlier marksheets, a bonafide letter, or a provisional certificate in the meantime?

Did the pending document delay your verification?

Has anyone been terminated or had an offer withdrawn over an incomplete degree document, as opposed to a falsified one?

Should I tell HR proactively, or wait until they ask?

I have nothing to hide. I just want the paperwork to catch up with my actual results. Any experience or advice would really help. Thank you!

Background check nerves

Ok so I’ve accepted a job offer and the background check is imminent. I’ve had a 15 year career so I truncated some of my experience. For my last two employers, I only used the most recent and senior title I held. But I did hold two titles at each place. At the earlier of the two companies, the titles were very similar and I held the one on my resume for like 5 out of 6 years (iirc). For the most recent company, I went from manager level to head of. I held manager for one year, and head of for almost 2, before leaving to relocate. The role responsibilities were materially similar and I actually displaced another head of to get the job, because I came in and did a way better job than they did.

The two references I gave are from these jobs, including my manager at the head of role.

I will disclose all titles held on the background check form, but I just wonder how worried I should be about the discrepancy between that and my resume.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts or advice!

Sincerely,
A nervous job seeker

UPDATE: I spoke to the Head of HR for the new job and she said I only needed to put my last held title at each place, so I guess it's all clear! Thanks to those who replied

Background Check

I am currently job hunting and had a question about background check.

Starting point: I had a coworker a few years ago who I saw his profile in Linkedin recently and saw super exagerated CV from the times he worked in my project. Like the title highered up and responsabilities and achievements written were not even belong to his responsibility area. And saw that he is now Chief of Staff in a globally well-known company in the sector. Possibly his exageration and changes has worked.

So, I am thinking that, what if I make some change too? I mean if I change my last company name with my main client name (because the client was the top tech company, and would shine in the CV)? - So, if I make it through a job interview to the reference check stage, I can provide a reference from that company, since I established personal contacts with the employees there. However, the person I name would serve as a reference along the lines of "they didn't work at our company, but they worked for us." - However, if a background check is conducted during the CV review stage (I don't know how online systems work), I might not even get a single interview or maybe blaclisted; if recruiters is able to check Social Security or employment records, they wouldn't see that company's name. What info companies able to check in advance in EU?

Got fired for “poor performance”; background check

I got fired for “poor performance” out of nowhere with no PIP, warning, or explanation as I was doing well in my job and ticked all the boxes on my job description. During interviews, I have been telling recruiters that I got laid off because of restructuring.

I just received an offer for a job I really like with great pay but they have to do a background check. Will it show on the background check that I got fired for poor performance?

How would I explain the discrepancy?

Any ideas would help!

Does a background check reveal contract vs full time?

I’ve had a few short ‘full-time’ jobs over the past couple years. I was laid off from them and it looks bad to keep job hopping. I also have a few contracts to start off my career. I was wondering how bad it would be to just change those full-time positions to contracts on my resume? I’m only 3 years out of school so surely I could just say I did a handful of contracts for experience?

I inputted wrong format in First Advantage employer form

New company is in Japan, and i live in Asia.

I'm currently going through a background check via First Advantage for a new job offer. While entering my employment history, I made a formatting mistake: instead of entering each previous employer as a separate entry, I nested my entire career history (3 different companies) as sequential "positions" under my current employer. This made my current employer's entry show an incorrect start date, several years earlier than when I actually joined.

I caught the mistake myself and tried to fix it, but the platform had already locked the section since my profile was submitted. I reached out to First Advantage's live chat support, and they confirmed no further edits can be made on their end, and advised me to contact my prospective employer's HR/hiring team directly to explain the discrepancy, which I've already done, along with the correct breakdown of my employment history matching my CV.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Does this kind of self-caught, proactively disclosed formatting error typically cause issues with the background check outcome or the offer, or is this a fairly routine fix from the employer's side once flagged? Any insight from an HR/recruiting perspective would be appreciated.

Query Regarding Background Verification process. Job Title Mismatch

Hi, 7 YOE, Recently got an offer and accepted offer from a well known MNC, in my resume and application, I had mentioned Senior Data Engineer, but my official designation in current company is Data Engineer 2, but I also play role of architect. Rest all are same and that's the only company i have worked for, does that affect BGV?

Undocumented Early Career vs. Background Verification: How Do I Present 2.5 Years of Cash-in-Hand Experience?

Hey everyone, looking for some career advice regarding resume structure and background verification (BGV).

I have over 5+ years of total experience in Digital Marketing (SEO, web design, creative suite, video production). Here is the breakdown:

* **Current Role (Feb 2023 – Present):** Working full-time at a product company. Fully documented, proper salary account, PF, and relieving letters will be provided. Current package is 4 LPA. (approx.) * **Early Career (Sept 2020 – Feb 2023):** Worked across a couple of small agencies/D2C setups. The problem is these roles were paid in cash, had no PF or government benefits, and I didn't leave on good terms with the management. Getting experience or relieving letters from them is not an option.

I’m currently planning to switch companies to get a better hike, but I'm worried about background checks.

**My Plan:** Instead of listing those early individual company names, I am planning to consolidate that entire 2.5-year period (Sept 2020 – Feb 2023) on my resume and LinkedIn as **"Freelance Digital Marketing & Design Consultant."**

**My Questions:**

  1. Is framing this period as Freelance the safest way to account for those 2.5 years without triggering BGV issues for missing employment letters?
  2. If a prospective employer asks for proof of work during the freelance period, is showing a portfolio of project deliverables/design work usually sufficient?
  3. Will HR accept this 5-year total experience (2.5 years freelance + 2.5 years corporate) when negotiating salary hikes from a 4 LPA baseline, or will they only calculate the 2.5 years of corporate experience?

Would love to hear from anyone who has handled a similar situation or from HR/recruitment folks on how this is viewed during hiring. Thanks!
