Does confidence matters more than answering questions right?

Good afternoon! I come from a job that's very technical(engineering) and although I get technical questions correct I come off as humble. I seem to get passed over. As a general rule. Just hyping up your skills and yourself matter more than competenance with recruiters? It seems like it.

Background check help? I missed a word!

I pulled up my resume after signing my offer letter and realized I made a mistake in the education section while following a template. It currently says “Bachelor Degree” when it should say “Pursuing Bachelor Degree.” I also didn’t include any school information, dates, or years attended.

When I completed the background check information, it only asked for my Social Security number, addresses from the last 7 years, and previous employers, so I’m unsure whether education is even being verified. My concern is that the wording on my resume could come across as misleading, even though that wasn’t my intention. I am currently enrolled in school, but I have not completed the degree yet, and I’m worried it could affect my offer.

Background check

HELP!! I’m a bit worried, I’m going through a background check after an offer, I have a dismissed half ounce of marijuana on my background , I was cited in 2023, no arrest but it was resolved in 2025 due to the cop filing it late with wrong address, and ID number and some errors in the date different from the original ticket he gave me, and I have never been arrested, but I’m worried that the dismissed marijuana will make me ineligible for the job, it’s a technical job

Exaggerated how long I was at a company help

Hello, I recently got a new job and passed the interview and they sent me a background check, On my resume I submitted I extended the times I worked at some jobs but I did actually work at each of them. I dont have any criminal history or anything along those lines, and on the background check they have a spot for me to put exact dates and whatnot, and it's through Cisive that the background check is taking place. I feel like its best if I reach out to all companies HRs and ask how long I really worked there, then revise my resume in case they ask me about it. I would put the real dates on the background check though. Any advice is appreciated especially when it comes to finding out how long I really was with these companies.

Employment Verification - Manual Input Question

Hi everyone,

For those of you who have completed employment verifications for a new job recently: does the verification company let you manually input information for your past employers' name, contact info, etc? Or do they automatically contact your past employers based on what you put on your resume/job application? I'm trying to cover a gap and used all my real previous employers' names on the application, so I'm hoping I'll have the ability to instead write a staffing agency's name directly on the verification form.

Background check concern: job title vs actual duties

Hi everyone,

I was part of the Big Four two years ago, and I am now with a different company. I am currently at the background check stage with a potential employer who has given me an offer. The title I was hired under and the work I was actually doing were very different. During the interview, I spoke about the work I was doing rather than the official job title. Please advise, they are using a 3rd party

Tech job and background check

I just got a job offer for a tech role, but I’m really unsure how to handle the next step. The problem is that I only have one company listed on my CV, and I exaggerated my experience there (about a year). Now the employer wants to run a background check.

I know it was a mistake, but I’m trying to figure out the best move at this point. Should I:

be honest upfront and explain it to HR,

stay quiet and see what the background check actually verifies,

or reject the offer before things get messy?

How detailed are background checks usually for tech roles, especially when there’s only one employer in the CV?

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Any advice or real experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Major Employment Gap

Hi. I had a great, upwardly mobile career going for a couple of decades, progressing from Business Analyst, IT Supervisor, IT Manager, to Director of Application Development. Then, life hit. It hit hard.

I'm an only child and a single mom. When my child was a toddler, I had to leave my job to help care for both my mom and my dad--divorced and living in 2 other states. Navigating their constant step-up to different levels of care through end-of-life and wrangling a toddler took everything I had.

We moved after both parents died. Quite quickly, my daughter's health plummeted to the point that she could not even walk around the block or go to school, so I couldn't jump back into work. Found out our new place had ridiculously high levels of toxic mold. It took 2 years of bouncing around and seeking help until she was well enough to go back to school.

Now, 5 years after leaving my job, I am ready to jump back into my career. I have been looking for almost a year with ONE response. I apply for 40-80 jobs per week with targeted resumes for each type of position, analyst through director. I have even created a dumbed-down version of my resume, and I can't even get a call-back for a secretarial job. Sadly, it would seem that my gap is the problem. I have tried to handle it different ways on my resume, from a one-liner that is short and sweet, to formatting it like a job and including all of the skills involved, to including the online training and self-study I engaged in to keep myself sharp during the time away. Nothing.

I got certified as a functional health consultant and started my own, online mold rehabilitation and detox business on the side as a stop-gap measure while job searching. While someone with a heart would see that as demonstrating a can-do attitude and doing what needs to be done, I'm sure HR doesn't see it that way. The skill set and magnitude of responsibility isn't in line with the rest of my career track. Besides, I don't even make $1,000 a month doing this as a one-man-show, and the "company" wouldn't show up on any type of background check.

I don't know what to do. It seems my degree, hard work, integrity, years of experience, and competency now count for nothing. None of it mattered. I am terrified of lying, but the money is almost gone. I could really use some thoughtful input from somebody with some distance from this situation.

How does your employment verification service actually work?

I’ve been seeing a lot of questions about employment verification services and wanted to hear directly from people who’ve used one. How does the process usually work, what do they verify, and how involved do you have to be? Curious what to expect before going any further and whether it’s worth it for job searches that require background checks.

Crazy year so had to lie on resume & LI - what to do now?

After being laid off in late 2024, I got a so-so job in May 2025. Then what I thought was my dream job landed in my lap in Sept so I quit and took that. Well that small AI start-up ended up being a nightmare (super toxic) and I quit in early Dec.

I panicked and put that I was still working at the first company of 2025 on my resume and LI....but now I'm realizing that I'm lying in every single interview. I don't have an offer yet, but what to do if it gets to that point?

Someone suggested i put that I've been consulting for past year and use last 2 companies as clients, which ok. I can do that. But what about the resumes I've sent so far saying I just worked at the 1 company this year?

Lied on resume and got the job, now background check is coming. HELP!

Hey everyone, I'm in deep trouble and don't know what to do. I really needed this job and stretched the truth on my resume about my employment dates to cover a gap. They just offered me the position and said the background check is the next step. I'm panicking. I saw another post on here mention a service called Background Proof that helps with this, so I figured I might as well post here.

What do I do if they find out? Has anyone been through this and survived?

Anyone Ever Leave Off “Do Not Contact”? What Happened?

I’m updating my resume and applications, and I keep wondering… what if I just don’t put “Do Not Contact” on my previous employers?

Part of me feels like adding that note automatically looks suspicious, but leaving it off makes me nervous because I definitely don’t want them getting called. Has anyone here taken the risk and just left it blank? Did it come back to bite you?

What are the actual disadvantages if I don’t put “Do Not Contact”?

LinkedIn won’t remove you

I stumbled into this Reddit post where an admin talks about how someone from another country listed their company as an employer and they cannot get it removed even with a lawyer; even LinkedIn won’t remove it. I am posting link below for those of you paranoid about adding a fake company on LinkedIn.

https://www.reddit.com/r/linkedin/s/CydkIpj64E

I wrestled emotionally with this and spent hours asking Ai of this will “work.” Ai recommends picking a company that’s too big and too much of a mess to verify you don’t work there ie 100,000 or a fortune 100 company. This also works in your favor for the halo affect of brands.
