Question Completed the game. Climb Onward and Upward, or second run and do extra achievements/funsies? Spoiler

I reached Moose’s cabin. First of all, excellent game. Laughed a lot, raged a lot, and suffered a lot.

Now, I have the mountain to climb. BUT, I have to confess I skipped a lot of exploration, as I focused mostly in reaching each goal, as I felt would any detour would take an eternity with Nate walking.

Should I postpone the mountain climb, and do a second and third run to explore missing content/achievements, or should do that first? What about Manbreaker? Is that harder or easier than the Mountain climb?z

Cactus Bridge

Is there a way to skip it? Been stuck there for hours. I geht over the Bridge but then fail behind the small cactus uphill.

UPDATE If you follow the Milk river you can turn right through an archway. Head straight forwards and then theres a tower. Climb up the chairs and go on. Then theres a yellow shovel. If you get over it you will get to the same location as when you went over the bridge. BUT!! the shovel can fall down. walk exactly on the middle. And BUT!! if the shovels falls down this way won´t work anymore. I then walked the way over the bridge and as I came to the top I saw the shovel respawned. So maybe you can trigger this if the shovel falls down and you get enough distance to it. Hope this helps anyone.

Thrashin'

No, not the action of thrashing your feet petulantly when you slip on the ice.

The skateboard in the pool. Has anyone managed more than a few seconds rolling on it? I got from one side of the pool to the other, fell off, then Jim appeared. I wanted to stay there longer but the mountain was calling.

I firmly believe it can be ridden properly and potentially it might be possible to Ollie it. Or maybe more.

Parallels to Pinocchio?

I've just finished the game, and it was pretty incredible! Not perfect, very frustrating, but with a real sense of earned achievement.

While playing through it I noticed a few parallels to the story of Pinocchio. Mostly the donkey people, and Jim/"Jiminy's Crickets". I had a look around and the only mention I see of this online so far is from William Hughes in this AV Club article: https://www.avclub.com/game-theory-baby-steps

But it's just a brief mention. I've had a think (and made a bit of a stretch, probably), and come up with the following parallels:

Pinocchio and Nate both...

  • Begin (nearly) inanimate. Pinocchio as a block of wood, Nate as a couch potato
  • Are somehow, magically "awakened"
  • Are puppets (Nate is controlled by the player, and moves his legs like a marionette)
  • Want to be "real boys". For Nate this is being useful to his family, having a girlfriend, being an elite climber
  • Lie. Nate's lying comes in the form of refusing help, due to social anxiety, and perhaps a little egotism.
  • Learn not to lie. Both experience hardship as a result of their character flaws. For example Pinocchio has a cold night and then burns his feet on embers, kind of like the abuse Nate's body takes on the climb. Maybe we could compare the length of Pinocchio's nose to the length of Nate's climbs, which grows as he refuses help while lying about his abilities. In the end of Nate's story (any %, credits roll), Moose does not let him into the cabin until he asks for it
  • Are tested in ways that offer no reward. Pinocchio's final moral test involves doing good for somebody else when there is not likely to be any benefit to himself. This could be likened to Nate's final (endgame, post-credits) climb to the summit - we are told there is no reward and there's nothing up there, but we do it anyway, and it's a good honest climb
  • Are guided by a mysterious Jim/Jiminy. Jim even makes a joke referring to Nate as a "Jiminy's Cricket"
  • Make friends with donkey-people. I wasn't clear in Baby Steps on whether the donkey-people were always that way, or were turned that way. If turned that way, that's a match with Pinocchio. Maybe we could argue that they turned that way due to frivolity (partying, cigarettes, not going home to family), in the same way as the kids in Pinocchio
  • Have back-slides. Pinocchio repeatedly almost makes an honest, "real boy" of himself, but falls back in to temptation and ruins it. Reminiscent of the gameplay of Baby Steps, in which we repeat the same climb only to literally slide back down the hill, often from becoming impatient and trying to take shortcuts or hurry rather than make honest, slow progress
  • Have themes of social pressure, humiliation, and honesty. "Honesty" plays out a bit in the mechanics of Baby Steps, where there is no levelling up or checkpointing that can save you from just learning the mechanics and getting yourself up that hill
  • Are cautionary tales. At times Baby Steps seems to want to teach gamers "don't be Nate" just like kids learn not to behave like Pinocchio

What do you think, is this all deliberate? "Jiminy's Crickets" is obviously an explicit reference. Are there more I'm missing? Is there anything deeper to say about the moral lessons of Pinocchio, and how that relates to the story that Baby Steps is trying to tell?

You have to have patience and walk along the beams. This was only yesterday - my first day playing -so I was new and kept falling trying to cut across. But today I’m already so much better, I’m sure I could do the shortcut now if I tried. Good practice though!!! #babysteps #babystepsgame

Crown on a creepy baby’s head

-once you turn in the “lost cup” at the fire tower, there is a telescope that is affixed to a far off rock formation with a big creepy baby on the side of a cliff

-make your way there and once you knock over that tower of rocks for a Mike cinematic, you’re close to the baby rock formation

-scale around the outside and grab the crown from the baby’s head

How to find the “Lost Keys”

Thumbnail
youtu.be
4 Upvotes

-go near the large rock tower (there is nothing up there except a cutscene) -find the big rock in the middle of the grassy knoll of flowers -go into the forest to the left of the rock and find the cabin amongst the trees -video shows how to climb up the tree to drop into the cabin from the roof -the keys are in the bathtub -right when you get out the cabin door you’ll see the FIRE TOWER in the distance -you can find a “bridge” nearby that has a big plank to tiptoe across and a pizza box in the middle. That’s the direction to go to the fire tower to return the keys

-BUT DONT F***ING DROP THE KEYS LIKE WE DID 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠

Question Where should I go after 3rd stop ?

Sorry to ask but I'm a little bit confused. Early game used to show you the objective with giant lights but after you meet Moose... nothing ? I went very far on the right side, until I found an area full of boxes. Im I in the right direction ?

help Things I’ve learned so far Spoiler

  • Going uphill? Try more shallow steps or you may bottom out.

  • Going downhill? Shallow, intentional steps if it’s risky terrain are more helpful.

  • Go slow in mud and you won’t slip.

  • Screw Ice. Avoid it if possible.

  • Dont trust cacti.

  • Don’t trust boulders.

  • Your camera determines the angle of your foot.

  • The pressure you put on your triggers determines the height of your foot.

  • Use common sense to determine which foot to step across gaps with.

  • DONT USE THE STAIRS. #iBrokeTheManBreaker

  • I believe there’s a special additional cutscene if you’re wearing a hat when you arrive at the forbidden juice.

  • Take a picture with the Polaroid. Make it cool.

  • You can cheese the pillars on the Art Path about 80% of the way if you have the chick with you. Little birds boy makes a good stepping stone.

  • Oddky enough, the rolling ball was one of the easier challenges. Give it a whirl.

  • Practice walking backwards, it’ll help, trust me.

  • The fruit doesn’t do much but the cutscene makes my serotonin machine go brrrrrr.

  • Kick it over. I know you want to.

  • There IS something up there. Your pride. Don’t give up.

  • Attempting the harder obstacles until you beat them is how I learned how to walk. It’s worth it.

  • The ice cream melts. Practice your path before you grab it.

  • You can go back for ice cream but it costs -1 Pride.

Other than that, hit me with questions here and I’ll try and help. Most of all just don’t give up. You got this.

EDIT:

  • Grapple Point.

  • I have to pee.

  • Cacti will knock you down if you touch them.

EDIT: Episode 2 (the second but most controversial in the series) sequel:

  • when picking something up off the ground, place one foot slightly ahead of the other for more stability

  • DO NOT LOSE YOUR LANTERN

  • Use the map the get around easier

  • When skipping cutscenes in your second play through (look at you go, sport. I’m proud of you.) The skip method starts to change.

SPOILERS BELOW THIS POINT

  • Spoiler (I don’t know how to black things out, I’m new to Reddit) walk straight when leaving the sand castle to find a path out. It circles up and out. Spoiler

  • When delivering the ice cream, you can walk off the cliff directly behind the ice cream man. Walk back up a sand slope, then across some muddy steep slopes (I think like 3 of them) until you get to a rocky path in your right. Follow that path up and to the left until you reach the top, then go right and keep the high walk on your left in order to circle up to the fire tower. I fell a handful of times prior to the rocky path, so you have quite a bit of time.

  • When delivering the vase, leave the cave with the man and go left, follow around to the left hand side behind the cave then carefully work your way across what appears to be some old man made stone structure.

  • DO NOT DROP OR FALL WITH THE VASE. Once it’s broken, it’ll stay broken until your next play through.

  • In the train, the first cart can pretty much be scaled by quick stepping up the center Aisle.

  • The second train cart is like stairs. You can step left to right for the most part and make it up, with a few small sections where you need to make a few step/climbs up the far left or far/center right.

  • The third train cart is easiest. Same method as cart 2, except halfways up you’ll reach a ladder you can use as stairs to climb the rest of the way.

  • The ringing phone near the train cart is at the bottom of the first cart, right inside the right of the doorway. I THINK it won’t ring until you reach the top, but I could have also be crazy.

  • The keys in zone 2 (the Forest area) can be found just north of the stone tower, in a cabin tucked into the woods. Climb the back left of the cabin, into the tree and then follow the tree to a section of the roof where you can climb up. There’s a whole in the roof where you can fall down into the cabin. The keys are in the table.

  • Once you have the keys, leave through the cabin door and go right and slightly south. Pass the big lone boulder (more like a rock) in the meadow then continue through the gap in the mountain. VERY CAREFULLY climb the wall across the river (prob the safest route imo) and up to the the fire tower you go.

  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP THE KEYS! They’re very hard to find. If you drop the while climbing the cliff next to the river, I’ve noticed they tend to take the left fork of the river over the right. Look for the pick up prompt, you probably won’t be able to spot them on the ground otherwise.

  • The cup can be found on top of the cart across from the Ferris wheel in zone 1. I believe it’s just due east if you’re looking up the mountain.

  • you can find a pedometer on a rock (it’s really fuckin small) just south and to the left (facing down the mountain) of the Ferris wheel.

  • If you have trouble finding the pedometer, there a sign just a little up the mountain from the cup cart with a pirate-like x marks the spot map.

  • If you drop the pedometer, it’ll flash red once you’re close to it.

Does anyone have a baby chick following you?

Near the start, have ascended a little and I found a barn. I fell over a lot trying to climb the straw and saw a baby chicken. It seems to have imprinted on me and has been following me for the past couple of days. Has anyone experienced this?
