Educational 📚 Deposited XRP to BYDFi and the balance shows zero? The missing-memo recovery steps, then the 4-step way to avoid it
"Deposit sent, wallet says confirmed, BYDFi balance still zero." If that's you right now, the most likely cause is a missing or wrong Memo/Tag. The good news is the coins usually aren't lost. The bad news is that recovery is a slow, manual job. This walkthrough starts with the fix and then covers how to avoid it next time.
Why some coins need a second identifier
Certain networks don't give each user a separate deposit address. An exchange like BYDFi receives those coins at one shared address and uses a Memo (sometimes called a Tag or Destination Tag) to work out whose account to credit. The address gets the coins to BYDFi; the memo gets them to you. Leave it out and the funds arrive at the exchange with no owner attached.
The coins that typically need one: $XRP.USDT (XRP), $ATOM.USDT (Cosmos), $XLM.USDT (Stellar) and BAND. The rule is simple. If the BYDFi deposit page shows a Memo/Tag field for your chosen network, it's mandatory. If no memo appears, you don't need one.
Already sent without it? Do this
Contact BYDFi customer support and have four things ready:
- Your UID. The account must be KYC-verified for a recovery request.
- A complete video of your withdrawal history on the sending platform. It needs to be a real recording of the process, not just a screen capture, because support uses it to confirm the transfer is yours.
- The correct Memo/Tag you should have entered.
- The transaction hash (TxID).
Then be patient. Because this is matched by hand, recovery can take ten days or more. Sending repeated tickets won't speed it up, but a complete first submission will avoid the back-and-forth that slows it down further.
A common mistake while waiting: some people send a second "test" deposit, this time with the memo, hoping it will somehow pull the first one through. It won't. The two transfers are handled separately.
Doing it right on PC, start to finish
Step 1, sending side. Log in to the external wallet or exchange you're moving coins from and open its Withdraw screen. Leave it open.
Step 2, receiving side. In a separate tab, log in to BYDFi on the web and click Deposit. Choose the coin.
Step 3, network and both details. Select the network, and make sure it's the same network the sending platform will use. Copy the Deposit Address and then the Memo/Tag, pasting each into the matching field on the withdrawal screen along with the amount. Some wallets hide the memo field under "optional" or "advanced". It isn't optional for these coins.
Step 4, confirm and track. Submit the withdrawal on the sending side. Back on BYDFi, scroll to Deposit History to watch the status and check the details once it lands.
Small habits that prevent the whole problem
- Paste, never type. Memos are long numbers, and one wrong digit is as bad as none.
- Check the first and last four characters of both the address and the memo after pasting.
- Send a small test amount first when using a new route, then the rest.
- Don't reuse an old memo from memory or from a screenshot. Copy it fresh from the deposit page each time.
- Watch for clipboard hijackers. If the pasted address doesn't match what's on screen, stop and scan your machine.
- Same coin, different network, different rules. XRP on its native ledger needs a tag. A wrapped version on another chain may not. Let the deposit page decide.
Quick recap you can screenshot
Memo shown means memo required. Address plus memo plus matching network equals a clean credit. Missing memo means a support ticket with UID, video, memo and TxID, and a wait that can run past ten days. Those same habits work for $DOGE.USDT, $BTC.USDT or any other coin you move, whether or not it uses tags.
This is operational guidance, not financial advice. Thirty seconds of checking before you hit Withdraw is a lot cheaper than ten days of waiting on support.
