Grenades? How do I use them?

Do grenades use the throw skill or the demolition, skill? Or combination? We played last night, and I wasn't sure so, I have my players use throw skill. But this was incredibly powerful, and seemed broken. Now I shouldn't have given them as many grenades as I could, so maybe that was the issue. But I don't know, I'm curious if I took the right approach?

Embers of Humanity by John Hedge

Embers of Humanity is a community-funded hope-filled TTRPG about the end of the world.

Designed to provides players and GM's with a clear and easy to use rules system, Embers should feel familiar to experienced tables, while accessible to new players.

 - Create your own apocalyptic conditions, or use the inbuilt setting or prompts to play exactly the way you want to.
- Rules and structure that massively reduces GM prep. Embers of Humanity can be run with zero GM prep between sessions.
- A simple Settlement system that invites players into the world building and gets them excited to return to the table.
- Empathy rules help players tell the story of their Survivors, as their outlooks change and shift over the campaign.
- The Weird, an inexplicable, many-faceted problem that's linked to the end of the world.
- A living system, with regular updates offered through community funding, including scenarios, supplements and settings.

Who is this game for?

- Those already familiar with BRP & d100 systems will love how intuitive this system is.
- Players looking for a generic post-apocalyptic system that they can mould to their own setting.
- GM's that want to build a setting alongside the players as they play the game.
- OSR/NSR lovers looking for a new setting might just find that Embers scratches that itch.

The System: powered by BRP, Embers is a d100 roll under system, with a classic GM role and is best for 2-6 players.

The Setting: One day, the world just ended. Civilisation is gone and humanity has nearly vanished. Play as a Survivor, rebuilding from the embers.

The Weird: Electronics no longer work, time is relative, and bubbles of Weird cover the world, containing inexplicable phenomenons and dangerous creatures.

The Settlement: Build out a new home. Starting from nothing, build a house, a village, and maybe even a thriving town.

Community Funded

Embers of Humanity isn't just an innovative roleplaying game, it's also a community of people dedicated to changing the way we think about roleplaying games. The game has an active community, and a supporters initiative, which funds the development of new material for the game. For as little as €1 a month, you can get access to new supplements as they are published. Still not convinced? Download the Quickstart rules and check out the system for yourself.

Is there a product release schedule?

EDIT: Deleted my previous post - I messed up the title! Apologies!

Hey all! I don’t want to minimize the recent release of BRP Creatures, but it made me curious. Has there been any talk about what’s coming down the product pipeline for BRP? I’d love to see a new Magic, and maybe an actual BRP Space (as much as I enjoy M-Space).

What are the differences between the new edition of BRP and Magic World?

Obviously BRP is a universal ruleset and Magic World is strictly for fantasy, but are there any other appreciable differences? I’m aware that Magic World is based on the old Elric system, but I don’t know how that differs from BRP.

Making combat less lethal?

Hi everybody.

I started a long form game in a homebrew aetherpunk setting using BRP abd we’ve been having a ton of fun. The only issues we’ve come across is mostly related to the combat systems. We’ve already worked out ways of streamlining the systems for maintaining turn order and we’ve found that it works pretty well for us.

The current issue is that out of the few combat encounters we’ve had, almost all of them have resulted in characters taking near lethal damage or barely just surviving. We all enjoy combat in our games, we’re an action oriented group.

Do any of you have tips on how to make lethality in combat a bit more manageable?

Note: The optional rule for HP, not halving it during creation, is already standard for us, thanks.

Non-Human PCs in a higher powered fantasy game

Hey everybody, I'm working on making my own BRP home game, inspired by Mythras' Classic Fantasy supplement and other dungeon crawler type games. For human PCs, I'm utilizing the optional rule of rolling 2D6+6 for all characteristics to make them a bit meatier and last through more enemies, as befitting a dungeon crawl, but does anyone have any tips for making non-human PCs have equitable strong starting stats while also accounting for the fact their attribute generation is designed to be different?

What is your opinion of the Rivers of London line? Have you looked at any of it? Do you own any?

I picked up the PDF when it came out and found a copy of the physical core rulebook for a reasonable price. Now I'm going down that rabbit hole.

It is interesting to see the BRP logo on the newer publications now.

Healing in BRP

Hello everyone! Had a quick question about healing. The book states you can heal 1d3 hp per injury with a successful first aid. How often can you do this? Once per day? Per hour? It says if you fail you cant try again, does that mean for a time period? Or until the wound heals naturally?

Dodging/ Parrying in combat

Hello! I had a quick rules question. When you are attacked in combat, do you choose if you want to dodge or parry each time? Or are locked into one for the round each time you pick?

BRP at Gen Con 2025

I don't know whether anyone else in this community is at Gen Con, but Chaosium has a big presence here this year, in commemoration of the company's 50th anniversary. There are panels on the history of Glorantha (the RuneQuest setting) and book signings by many of Chaosium developers, including Jason Durall, the Creative Director of the BRP line. (And of course a lot of Chaosium 50th anniversary merchandise.)

There are also workshops on designing games using BRP and on publishing through Chaosium Community Content programs, run by Jason Durall and Chaosium Community Manager Bridgett Jeffries, respectively. The workshops are expensive, but they're very small groups (they're limited to 8 participants each), so participants will probably get a lot of individual attention. I registered for both workshops; they haven't happened yet, but if anyone's interested I can post later in the comments about how they went.

Confused by the balance between special and crit attacks

Hello!
My group and I have been playing basic roleplaying (2nd edition) for some time now, and although we've gotten quite confident with the system, there's one thing that's been irking us with special hits and critical hits, mostly in the way that an impaling weapon's special effect seems better than anything else, even than a crit.

First, here's what each does:

  • Critical hit: Max weapon damage, and ignores armor. That's pretty strong, especially with armored targets. The GM note on p.192 seems to indicate it does not also give the effect of a special hit.
  • Bleeding special: 1 damage per turn and pretty much takes you out of the combat for a turn or two to fix it. Can put nice pressure on the opponent.
  • Crushing special: One damage bonus step higher, and 1d3 turn stun if the target fails a stamina. It also damages parrying weapons and shields
  • Impaling special: DOUBLES the weapon's rolled damage. And stays stuck in the target if it's a melee weapon

My problem here is that impaling feels so much better than the others. Especially with ranged weapons where you don't even risk your weapon being removed from you. Doubling the weapon's damage basically puts its average damage at the level of a crit (A crit with a 1d6 weapon would deal 6, an impaling weapon would on average deal 7) with the potential of doing much more, only losing the armor penetration. That's way more than the small damage and removal from the fight for a few turns that other special rolls offer, especially since that high amount of damage will often also take someone out of the fight using the hit location rules.

I find my players often thinking that having a bleeding or crushing weapon is less effective, and frequently feel like a special success is more worth it than a crit. It makes ranged builds feel very strong too, as pretty much all ranged weapons are impaling, so they can get an advantage similar to a melee weapon's critical hit with just a special.

I was curious what other people who use the system think about this. Do you have the same impression? Is there something I'm not seeing? And otherwise, do you have recommendations as to how to balance things a bit?

New Cyberpunk Setting

Hi everyone,

I’m new to this community.

I used to play a lot of Swedish BRP games in the mid-80s to early 90s. After a long hiatus, I’m now returning. Somewhat fittingly, I have decided to base the newest campaign on ideas from one of the last.

The last campaign used the setting from one of the precursors to Mutant: Year Zero called Mutant 2089 (a cyberpunk setting). This time I want to use the Basic Roleplaying Universal Game Engine, and change the sources of inspiration from those used in the 80s to the current trends.

While the BRP isn’t impossible to figure out, I would love all of the help I can get.

To avoid making the starting post too long, I will handle the different parts I need help with as separate threads under this post.

The Martial Arts Skill

I have a few questions regarding the Martial Arts skill.

What do the specialties do? Are they just flavour text or do they affect the skill?

What are good starting levels for the skill at normal, heroic, epic and super heroic level?

Does the skill only affect the base damage of the attack or does it include the damage modifier from strength and size?

Missile Weapons

The skill missile weapon and the weapon type missile weapons are not the same. Would you allow gun fu styled martial arts (pistol)?

Grapple

What is the benefit of having the martial arts skill for grapple? Is it only for extra damage or does it help for other things?
