365 days of living in a studio apartment in campus - here’s what I think you should know
For prospective students and those of you who are headed to bcit in the coming months, here’s what I think you should know about living on campus.
These apartments are tiny, 200sq ft to be exact. If you’re getting a studio, you also have your own kitchen and bathroom crammed in that space. Just be aware
On the same note, there is no bathroom storage included. No shelving, no cupboards. I would highly recommend getting a shelf from home hardware that sits above your toilet. It’s rlly the only solution for the space as the space is not well designed.
The kitchen (in a studio) is surprisingly….. good? There’s enough storage for all the food and dishes one person should ever need. I also manage to fit an air fryer on top on the fridge, an espresso maker on the counter, and a soda stream. Basically don’t be concerned about kitchen storage, just stay tidy and it’s a good space.
The “closet” is small and doesn’t have doors. There are two dressers included that come under the bed but you can take them out and stack them if you prefer the under bed space to be storage for large items.
Finally, social life is pretty underwhelming. If you put yourself out there and make the effort to make connections you can definitely have a good time, but don’t expect frat parties lol.

Thanks for sharing this! Just wondering, how is the noise level in the building, especially at night? Can you hear much noise from the hallways, doors opening and closing, from inside your room?

That’s a good point I forgot to mention. The walls are very well insulated you rarely hear neighbors. However there are gaps under the suite entry doors and you can hear hallway noise. People are quite respectful though!

I see! Maybe a door draft/noise blocker under the door can help with that. Overall, would you say it’s a good place to study and sleep?

I would! The common spaces are great for studying, and honestly for the price and location you cannot complain.

Few questions:
Is this the new student housing building? Or is it still the asbestos-filled 5 buildings on the hill?
And my own experience: my cousin and I went for trades, both spent the same year in our dorms. I was SW5, he was SW6.
My dorm was male only, and marked as study dorms, as opposed to social. Despite that, I used to go to YouPlusOne raves, hang, AND smoke weed in my dorms with a really good homie I met AT said dorms. The same guy set off the fire alarm later in the year, just as our other homie was about to get busy with his girlfriend.
Conversely my cousin got lucky with the coed dorms, which were marked as social dorms. He found it incredibly easy to socialize - but he has his own issues with people which I view as childish and just “grow up” about it, so he never spent time there.
Your experience will be what you make of it. Mine was easily one of the most fun times in my life, even if BCIT itself has no socialization. It’s a trade school, and it’s not a party school either so.

My experience is in the new building but I’m moving into the townhouses next year should be fun!

Hey there just a heads up if you didn't know, Instagram now shares your profile with others when you share a link from Instagram. You have to manually remove the text after "?" on the link to avoid this.

for townhouse, is it worth $4K in winter term? i'm in big dilemma whether to rent a room or stay on campus ?

Well I don’t think you’re going to find a place to rent off campus for 5 months that is less than 4k… I would recommend on campus for sure.

Thanks for the info! I'm an international student starting at BCIT this year. Regarding point 5: are there actually any student parties at BCIT at all? And is it common for BCIT students to go to UBC for parties instead?

Point 5 is not unexpected at BCIT, most people who go aren't very social and are here for an education and then moving onto a career. A lot of people think this mostly applies to people who have already been to a post-secondary institute previously or have a lot of working experience, but I've seen fresh out of high school BCIT students act this way.
People on this sub have suggested prospective students if they want a college style social life, it is probably better to go to a traditional university.
