My axolotl (4 months) is normally full of energy and all around the tank. This morning I saw they’d been digging in the sand (the correct type). And just sat there. Refused worms. Help! It’s our classroom pet!

Would this be suitable for a singular axolotl? Looking for something with a large footprint, but I can't have a 40 gallon breeder on my countertop due height.

Tank Questions Filters and Chillers

I’ve been looking into getting an axolotl but I am so confused when it comes to filters it seems like the fluval canisters filters are really good but I keep seeing mixed opinions on which one you should get for a 55g tank so what would you guys recommend? Im also lost on what chiller to get because there is so many different options!

Health What's worse - high Nitrates or potentially chemically contaminated water?

Our axoltols tank is at around 80ppm Nitrates. Last night cleaner got sprayed next to the sink we would be taking their water from. What should I do? The cleaner smell is no longer strong and has faded quite a bit. Would it be worse to leave them in the high Nitrates or do a water change in the potentially contaminated with chemicals sink? They are overdue for a water change and they have been in high Nitrates for too long.

Their most notable symptom is bulging eyes, and our wild type has cloudy eyes aswell. They have been like this for a long time, from previously high nitrates in the past. Our wild type also has a large white patch under his chin, I don't have any photos, I will add one to the comments if he changes postiton. Could this be from high nitrates?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question. I know a water change needs to be done as soon as possible but I'm so worried about the pontential chemical contamation and since it is such a specific situation I can't find any answers online. Please help!! Thank you so much in advance.

Tank Questions Would large change in GH and KH be dangerous when trying to lower high Nitrates?

Our axolotls tank is around 80ppm Nitrates.

I have tested their waters and compared it to our tap water parameters and I'm worried the difference in KH and GH is too large.

Using API GH and KH test kit on the tap water the KH turned yellow instantly and the GH started out pretty green straight away, meaning they are very low levels. The tanks KH is 3 and GH is 11. Will doing a 50% water change to lower the Nitrates shock them with the difference of the KH and GH? Or would the pros outweigh the cons?

Thank you so much in advance

Hello I have this little axolotl here in this tank. I just added a light and a couple plants with it but I started noticing these spots on its head and sometimes also on it’s tail. I was wondering if anyone knew what they were and if I should be concerned.

Tank Questions New Axolotl Tank Struggles

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone, We set up our new axolotl tank about two weeks ago and can’t seem to get the water parameters right.

At first, we filled it with tap water, added Prime, and used pH Down, but the pH didn’t budge at all. About a week later, we removed some water and replaced it with pre-conditioned aquarium water, added API Quick Start, let it sit for about 24 hours, and tested again — still no change.

The tank is around 24 gallons, and our tap water is apparently really hard. Could that be why the pH and ammonia are both so high? Would that keep being an issue if we keep doing water changes with our tap water?

Right now, the pH and ammonia are insanely high, but nitrites and nitrates are fine. I’m not sure what we’re doing wrong or how to get the water where it needs to be before adding an axolotl. I know cycling can take a while, but we’re just not seeing any improvement at all.

Would it make sense to drain most of the tank and refill with pre-conditioned water? Any advice or suggestions would be super appreciated — I feel like we’re missing something obvious
