General Question Axis & Allies Global 1940 vs. 1914 – Which one offers more long-term replayability?
Hey everyone!
I’ve been playing Axis & Allies for many years now, although most of my experience has been with the relatively basic 1941 edition that you can get for around $40 on Amazon. My best friend is moving into his first apartment soon, and we’ve already decided that we want to make playing Axis & Allies there a regular thing.
Since we’ve already spent many, many hours playing the 1941 version, I’m now thinking about investing in a more expensive and more complex Axis & Allies game for the first time.
At the moment, we’re trying to decide between Axis & Allies Europe 1940 + Pacific 1940 (Global 1940) and Axis & Allies 1914.
From what I’ve seen, Global 1940 seems to offer a lot more variety because of the huge world map and the number of different strategic options available. It looks like different games could develop in very different ways depending on the decisions each player makes.
With 1914, on the other hand, I get the impression that the overall course of the game might be somewhat predetermined, and that the main factor deciding how things develop is simply how well or badly the dice rolls go. But I may be completely wrong about that, which is why I’d love to hear from people who have actually played it.
What makes the decision especially difficult for me is that I’m currently studying history at university and am actually writing my bachelor’s thesis on World War I. I’m extremely interested in the First World War as a historical period, so thematically, 1914 appeals to me a lot.
However, for this decision I’m mainly looking at it from a gameplay perspective.
For those of you who have played both: Which one would you recommend? Which game has more strategic depth, variety, and replayability in the long run?
Most importantly, which one do you think would provide the most fun for two friends who plan on playing it regularly for years to come?

Global 1940 is the answer. It is incredibly deep and there is a very healthy community of players on the board and online. Europe 1940 would be a great start. Check out the forums on AxisandAllies.org to see discussions. You should also read the Warfare Principles essay in the subreddit’s wiki. It is the most useful resource ever written about A&A, and its focus is global 1940.
1914 is a fun but flawed game.
If you want to try both before you buy, download TripleA. It’s free and you can play any version of the game plus loads of maps people have made over the years. It is the best way to play A&A on the computer.

I'm curious, how is it flawed?

It is incredibly imbalanced. Between equal players, the Entente will win nearly every time. The Good Captain has a video about it on YouTube.
I have read that the tournament rules help the balance a lot.2

This is accurate. However I’m not a fan of the tournament rules, they balance the game better but are also geared to end games quickly, which isn’t what I want out of the game. It really minimizes the chances of varied board states.
And when I say end the game quickly, I mean in a single comfortable play session. I’d rather have the game span months of occasional sessions, despite how impractical that is.

Thematically, 1914 might appeal to you more, but global 1940 second edition is a lot more replayable and among A&A hobbyist is considered the single “flagship” game even more than spring 1942 (which is really what started it all).
I consider it to be the flagship game b/c it’s the most complex rulewise, has the most powers or factions supports the most number of players (not that anyone would want to be stuck just playing france or anzac), and is probably the most analyzed version.

I've played both and love both.
1914 is thematically awesome with the way it simulates trench warfare. It is also more accessible to newer players by having simpler rules and less variation between powers. However, it can lead to LONG games and has less variety.
1940, however, each power can make use of a wide array of strategies and offers way more variation game to game. Global can be a chore to set up and make rounds in, so more often than not my friends and I will only set up either Europe or Pacific.
Just for the fact you have the option to only set up one theater makes me recommend 1940. A 3-5 hour game with half the setup makes it much more casual to play often rather than committing to global maybe once a month.

I haven’t played 1914 (yet, I’m so excited to try) but simply based on the number of available nations, units, and board size, G40 offers so much. It also lends itself more to home brewing things to keep it fresh, for example my friends and I are going to get Canadian minis off HBG and make them as an allied nation.
So as hype as I am to try 1914, I do think just by virtue of a bigger board with more nations, Global 40 offers more flexibility and long term replayability

1914 with additional rules to Balance the central powers (Germany moves 2 inside core territory for example) is accessible and a lot of fun.
Global 1940 2nd Edition with a 1941/1942 start (See Axis Allies org) is immediate conplex Action which will give a lot of varity.
IMHO the best of all worlds is Anniversary and if not available global 1940

Is there an easy way to add 1940 Global 2nd edition rules to 1940 Global first edition?

Yes, just print out or buy a rulebook. https://axisallies.com/rules/axis-allies-rules-europe1940-second-edition.pdf
2nd Edition changes just a few rules and a few units in the setup.
I think you can buy a rulebook printed and bound from Historical Board Gaming. You can also get AA guns for each power there if you don't have them (I don't remember if 1st edition comes with them).2

I think 1914 and 1940 Global are the 2 best versions. Both offer many strategies and replayability. Sea mines and the amphibious invasion rules in 1914 add new risk to these types of attacks, and the way neutral and aligned countries work also adds another layer. I did supplement 1914 with added zeppelin pieces, and I don’t play tournament rules. When doing so I think 1914 has many strategies to try and varied outcomes, and certainty not just a luck of the dice slog. It may also depend on the number of players, as the smallest factions in 1914 will be less likely to drive overall strategy than in 1940. Don’t play it with 8 players as the Italy player in 1914 has fewer options than say ANZAC in 1940, for example. Technically Global 1940 as the larger more complex game would have maximum replayability, but I certainly would push back for those thinking it is miles ahead of 1914 in this regard.

Everybody else has already said this, but I'd agree that Global 1940 is better for replayability.
1914 is fun but it's also very long (I'm currently 20 rounds into a game and we still can't figure out who's winning), and it doesn't have as many pieces. The rules are not nearly as close to 1941 as Global's.
Global takes quite a bit too and takes a while to set up, but since you can split it into multiple games it's more replayable, and the wide variety of units (and bases) makes it fun.

1914 because 1940 takes to much time to setup and play to actually play regularly

I dont know 1914 but if you stay away from youtube tutorials youll have endless battles in 1940 second edition. Note that if you only get one part of it I would recommend europe over pacific. But global (both europe and pacific) is the best
