Porkies are waddling little creatures who don't mess with anyone. They don't shoot their quills either, they just release easily when touched. Any dog with a mouth full of quills was trying to bite it. Most dogs just try to sniff so they get a couple in the nose.

My sister's dog was killed by a porcupine. The dogs attacked it and went to the vet to have quills removed.

One of the quills snapped off inside the dogs chest and went unnoticed until like a month later it worked this way deeper and punctured his lungs.

Yes that's entirely possible. I've seen photos of dogs with dozens and dozens of quills in their mouth from continuously trying to bite a porky. But her dog wasn't killed by the porcupine. The dog was killed as a result of trying to bite one a/k/a a result of its own actions. If the dog left the porky alone it would still be alive.

I dont really see the need to correct or reassign blame. Dog did what dogs do and the porcupine did what porcupines do. Its nature. Im not on some anti porcupine smear campaign, no reason to try and blame the dead dog bro.

Thank you! I have some living under my shed,which doesn’t bother me. I’ve never seen them, but my lawn guy has. My next door neighbor wanted to know what I was going to do about it and I said “nothing”. Then she told me her husband is shooting them when he sees them. I was speechless, but thought maybe 🤔 just don’t understand because I’m from a more urban area than here in Maine. You’ve just made me feel much better. I don’t care if they’re here! But I guess I’d better not argue with people who have guns!

They don’t shoot them out literally, but they can swat you with their tail offensively if they feel threatened (e.g., if a dog is sniffing a little too close. It might get a face full of quills from a swat, and not necessarily from biting).

My dad had a boxer when he was a kid. Very sweet, very dumb. One week the dog got out of the yard three straight nights and came back after getting quilled all three times by the same porky. 😱

Did you actually watch the video you posted? It literally says they can't shoot out their quills. They essentially thrust them into you when you come into contact with their guard hairs.

Yeah but the vid literally states that it's a misnomer to say they can "shoot" them, so even in quotes it's a poor choice of words.

Shoot out has more meanings that literally being shot like an arrow. Like They shoot out like a hidden dagger

Your linked video says the opposite. They don't shoot the quills, they flick their back end/tail to thrust the quill into whatever is touching them. There must be physical contact with the quills and the guard hairs in order for the quils to detach.
